From Lake Superior*
[Correapondenpe of Tho Prera.l *
-Sopebiob Citv, Lake Superior, Nov. 14,1859.
The steamer North Star, of Cleveland, Ohio, ar
rived on tha sth Inst, -with a very large amount of
freight. Every housekeeper calculates to lay in
his winter supplies about the middle of this month.
For thobenefit of your readers I will mention the
prices of a few articles whioh I ordered from Cleve
land, inoltiding slbo frolgbt to Superior. Prime
Ohio buttori sixteen and a half eonta per pound;
hams, fourteen; flour, sovon dollara and a half j |
Fresh beef, very floe, one quarter, weighing one
hundred and sixty pounds at nine cents per pound;
mutton do. Several hundred pounds of fresh beef
sold hero from seven to eight cents per pound.
Prime 11 Greoling” apples, four dollars per barrel;
dried apples, eight cents per pound; Havana su
gar hr coffee at nine cents; crushed eleven and a
'half; brown from seven to nine cents, &c. At these
rates, a family can live very reasonably in Supo
■ rioroity. Indeed, it surprises me that more, per
sons with delicate lungs do not beeomo residents.
Tho olimate is trnly delightful, always invigorating
and bracing, and there is no reason why Superior
city should not become a place of great resort.
The schooner Ford left lately with a fall load of
lumber; laths, shingleß, Ao., for the mining towns.
I regret to say that schooners enough cannot be
had tor this trade. Next season, I trast several
vessels frem-Erio, Pennsylvania, will engage in
this trade. Wo have ftve steam-saw mills, capa
ble of supplying lumber enough for a fleet of ves
sels Il ls now generally oonoedod that Superior
o ah supply the entire lake with lumber, etc. This
Is caused by our position, harbor, and vastlribu
tary foreati adjaoont. One vessel left our harbor
last July, with two hundred and seventy-flve
thousand feet of lumber, etc., bound to Portage
take, a dlatanoe of three hundred end fourteen
miles. Owing to tho activity among the oopnor
I mines, <an extonsiva demand has been created for
I housesi Our farmers should supply the mining
towns with grain,' flour, hay. and vegetables.
The distance between Cleveland or Chicago, and ]
Portage Lake, is about seven hundred and fifty
nilloa as tha steamers run,, white Superior oity Is
distant but three hundred and fourteen mites. The
-Ontonagon copper mines, distant one hundred and
sixty mites from Superior, exported oopper ore to
’the value of over a million of dollars the past year
—new eaoh mine requires a largo amount of sup
plies, and. if some enterprising Yankee would
bring up a small steamer, and take freights at
> xaaßonaole ratos, he could sooure a forgo amount
of business, now monopolised by side-wheel steam*
an and screw-propellers. There is also. I believe,
a Government mail contract from Superior to Pid*
geon river, of five thousand dollara per annum.
The oontractow will finish improving the military
road from Superior to St. Paul by tho 15th Inst.
The road will then be in good stage order to the
3M mile post or janotlon with the load to Crow
Wing. The line of the Superior and State line
railroad, as surveyed last week, runs out the first
avenue above the military road to the Minnesota
line, about fifteen mites. The company are autho
rised to connect with any Wisoonsln or Minnesota
roads. Tho eleotion passed off very quietly, many
not voting. The Cemooratio tiokot received a ma
jority of thirty votos. “ North Sbork.*’
