", shot A. H. Neilson,: his Private secretary, about 11
o’clock on Sunday night} Septomhor 11. It is re*
ported that be, arrived on-/shore about 10 o’clock,
and - that he' ordered his servant to call Hopkins,
McKibboo, and Neilson J that Whon they came out
he 1 iris sitting on the piazza; seemed morose and
;',r r dxeitdd his servant to bring him his pis*
toU: whipped him and sent him to prison beoauso
y he ald not get themquick enough'; that whon ho
’ ‘received his pistols, he, without assigning any roa
■ son, told Neueon, that-ho must die; that Neilson
' retreated into his house, and that the King followed

which Neilson had removed.- The next morning,
however, he sent for MoKibben, and requested

power. It is said that the King beat the Queen,
- and that after shooting’ Neilson,-he stood over the
‘ Queen, and threatened to shoot both her and his

The King;, although, impetuous, has hitherto
. conducted himself In such a maunor as to win tho
respect and esteem of the entire foreign ooramu
- nity; consequently, they wore thunderstruck on
receiving the news of the. tragedy. For days it
' was tho great topic of conversation. Many were
Indignant that the King, being above tho law,
should so openly transgress it; hut the prevailing
feeling was that of regret. Air. Neilson, immedx
. ately after, being, shot, , was removed to a house
outside the paTaqe grounds, and Dr. H. B. White
was called to dross the wound. Tho wound, al
though dangerous, is not considered fatal. >
~ September 27th,' tho community was:thrown
into a groat exoitement by news from Labaina
- that the King had resolved to abdicate bis throne.
■ It is said ho has been Overwhelmed with grief
-ever since this unfortunate occurrence; that he
- has offered to make Mr. Noil bod all amends in his
power; that tie entirely exonerates the Queen, and
insists upon abdicating and submitting himself to

. BURNING OP THE HABTITF—A THRILLING OCEAN'
SCENE.
On the 12th September last the ship Achilles
left San Francisco, bound for Sydney, New South
Wales, and soon caught up with tho Mastiff, which
had loft San Francisco eighteen hours before her.
; They kept in company till the 15th, when, at 4.15
P. M«, the Mastiff was observed to have signals of
distress,flying, and to bo on fire. Wo sailed for
tho burning vessel, and, lay to close' to windward;
sent tho quarter boat,' socond officer, and four
men to asalst'in saving life. At about 4.30 P.
- i M. tho gie belonging to tho Mastiff came along
side with the captain’s lady, fivo gentlemon cabin
passohgors, and three Chinamen. *lt was only
after coming on board that tho position of all
. .on board began to be realized. . To witness tho
preitrate ana bleeding forms , of the three China
■ men. told tho means that had to be resorted to to
•• keep them from swamping tho boats. By this time
1 they., succeeded iu' launching three boats (they
, .having failed to. get their long boat over the side,)
which, togethor with Our boing so close-to the

quiet' amongst, the Chlncso, who could bo seen in

five gentlemen, cabin passengers, who wore saved
