Manufactory of Straw (ON's.
Vrom a recent publioation, containing the pre
oemilnge of the Rhode Island Society for the En
couragement of Domestic, Industry, we have glean
ed some interesting particulars of the origin of
straw braiding for ladies' hate and bonnets in the
United States. It appears that the first person
who invented this brawls of industry in this coun
try—which now affords profitable employment to
many thousands, and constitutes a very Import
ant article of our domeslie"trade—tend a lady who
is still living at Dedham, Massaphusette, a few-
MiiBS from lice oily of Boston. Trio maiden name
of the lady referred to wee Betsy Metcalf, (now
Mrs; Baker,) having-been born in 1780, and in
1799, at the age of twelve; years, acoomplisho the
invention which will link her name, in future,
with a department of industry and traffio that to,
- day employs millions of capital.
That the manufacture of straw Into hats and.
bonnets should be rated among the most import
ant on the list of our productive induetrial pur-
Butts is not surprising, when we Consider that when
the thermometer stands 'at ninety degrees in the
shade, as it did in this oily on Wednesday, there is
scarcely is bead between juvenility and old ago
that dons not rejoice In the comfort of a straw
'covering of some sort or other, In.etsserwhasetier,
alone, there were over sir . millions of bonnets and
hate manufaotured last year, , affording employ
ment to ten thousand of her inhabitants; and
that Radii greater proficiency in this department
of our manufactures Is desirable may be inferred
from the feet that about two and a quarter mil
lions of &Hera aro annually expended tu the pur
chase of this class of wearing apparel, of foreign
manufacture.
It 10, of course, not claimed that the invention
of braiding straw was absolutely original with ue;
the art was prat:Aired in Tusoany, and in soma
other Mateo of Italy, in very early times. Eng
land for many years wee tributary to Italy for

need. It was clear : from the beginning, that
Flora was not in condition; she hitched even when
going fast, and seemed off her gait. The California
mare moved with the cue. and. grape of ,a grey
hound, or of a swallow en the wing, and seemed
capable of afar higher rate of speed. • She Is' a.

Flora at any odds that could be got, auoll as 100
