JANUARY 1850. iy~==»To tho Philanthropic.—The undersigned, Ix 3 commonly known as 808 BUTT< a slave, aged ' 43 years, owned In Portsmouth, Virginia, and now In this city by permission of bis master, is earnestly anxious to free himself, and his wife and two children, from servitude, and bogs leave to appeal to the well known generosity of tho people of this great city for assistance, - The undersigned is a sexton, undertaker, and grave digger, and as such, it was his melancholy duty to dig the graves and bury 1,169 of the inhabitants of Ports-, mouth, In the short space of about seven weeks, in the aumtnerof 18$6, when tho yellow fever desolated that afflicted town. How these bQmble but arduous duties were regarded. by his own people, may be known by the following ex tract from the report of the Portsmouth Relief Asso ciation : “ And then we had to make provision for the burial of the dead. In this last sad duty, the Association waa materially assisted by the indefatigable and truly praise* worthy exertions of one of our colored population, familiarly known as Bob Butt. This humble negro, in hia line, perlormed duty beyoud all price. From morn till night he labored at hla spade, and frequently made the grave-yardhis resting place. Under file direction and superintendence, all who died of the ferer were de cently committed to their mother earth.” The undersigned la happy to be able to state, that the estimation in which he is held at home has prompted the master of himself and biß family to abate at feast osa-HALr of the moneyed value they would command, and that us boa earned aud saved about one-fifth of the aum which will bo required for the purchase of him self and family; and, furthermore, that the ladies, and gentlemen of Portsmouth will, In some public manner, or otherwise, assist him liberally In his efforts to pur chase the freedom of himself and family, should he, on bis return home, be able to show them that, by the kind ness of the people of this gteat city, the sum remaining to be raised is within the means or nls own small town.
