FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 'lO, 1868
Harley, the Comedian.
The London PaPetnieP:oregeideatli of Tont(
Firm. Mulvey; the comedian. He was and
de'nly struck with Paralynis, at the Pyisseea's,
Theatre, while perforrning the part of-..Lenne
fei Gobbo, in cc Tholtiercilant of Venice,', 4 ' and
•suhriyed only afew hours . . As the last of the
old school of actors,:as well as from his pro:
Tensional reputation, desertes some
passing notice.
Although not a.very aged man, liAnnito bad
been over half a century'on the stage. • It is
doubtful whether he was born in,1700; or in
1786. His friends took the latter date, while
he assumed the, former. It 'Matters little
whether he was in his 69th or his 73d year.
Above all people in the world, actors are ton
dei on the point - of years, Naturally so ; 'for
a limn who plays Romeo , having also played
it thirty years ago,'does .not like to' be told
ilull the real Romeo would be young enough: •
to ibe his son. Hennsir was tenacious : en
the point of lige, and: dressed as if he were
yoUng—which made .him appear 01d.... His
figure was light a little angular,' in
deed ; • his tread elestic ; manner
buoyant; his air youthful. Look at, him
across the street as he' jauntily move - Con,'
with a springy motion,• and you might:fancy
hiin a. middle-aged man of forty-five. Meet
him, face to face, and the net-work of wrinkles
about his eyes (commonly called crows'. feel) '
and the dreadfully juvenile wig, soHl-assort
ing with the faded face, Showed him to be 'one
'of • the Methuselahs of the British Stage.
After Gconas BARTLEY and Citeitss Kniser,s
bad passed , away, he deserved that appella
tion. These, however,' hid retired era cold
mortality smote them ;—but HARLEY died in
harness. His last words were 'spoken on the
stage.— • •
Originally apprOnticed to a linen diaper in
London, he finally became clerk in a lawyer's
office. OXBERRY, afterwards actorand author,
was the constant companion of his leisure
houra. Oximenv had already strutted his
brief hour upon the stage, and, fired , by this
example, HARLEY cut the law, and took to
acting. This wits abmit 1806. He joined, a
coMpany in Kent, which all but starved under
the managemenk of Dotfai t ie .TEartemn's
father. Subsequently, during the next nine
years, he roughed it in various - .other pro
vincial theatres. At last, having bad immense
practice, playing all charieters, fiorti bloody
tyrants and romantic lovers dawn to raddle-'
faced clowns and Comic dancers, ho attracted
the, notice 'of MICHAEL KELLY, andby his re
commendation was engaged by Mr. ARNOLD,
at the English Opera House, (no w the LyCetim
Theatre;) in' London. This KELLY was a
thorough Irishman, who was at once a mu
sician and wine merchant; and, in that double
capacity, was satirically described by SHERI
DAN as cc imPorter of music and compoier of
wine." He was uncle to FRANORS MARIA
KELLY, the celebrated actress, and *as stage
manager of the Italian Opera, Haymarket, for
thirty years.
Beam-made bis debut in London, in July
1816, and, as a dramatic singer, thobgh he had
no yoke, andas an eccentric comedian, though
he. bad no natural humcir, became. such
favorite, that he .was speedily enrolled in the
Dritry-Lane company, making his first appear
ance in September 1815, as Lissardo, in " The
Wonder." ARNOLD sued him for breaoh of
Contract, and got a verdict .of $6,000, which
woe never enforced. From 1816, to the time
of his death, HARLEY has scarcely ever been
disengtigedfin , anyzeeationc-4 , --rha-confined
self to the London .stage," and rarely, if
ever, wont out as " a star." He was
ever a
. reliable actor, eg letter-perfect" in
his part, always, sternly, and sober, and in
a word, he belonged to the class called Re
spectable, Ntith'whora'a small amount 'of talent
goes a great way, because, 'though not very
brilliant, "he has such an excellent private
character, you knew !"—HARLICY took parts
which better. actors would have ,been fright
ened'at, and rattled and hustled• through them
• -
in a noisy, pleasant '
manner, as if he were a
very good performer; until anoences liked,
him. He was not a comedian, in the true ac
ceptation of the phrase—but he was
,a good
farce actor. In one or two parts he was un
approached ;—Theiti were Phantom, In
" Frightened to Death," and Caleb Quetem in
cc The Review." But from first to last, his
humor was hard, dry,' and 'terribly artificial.
He was restlesdand fldgetty to a painful de
gree.
He never married, and bad occupied the
same house (in Gower street, near the London
University) for the last five and thirty years.
He was penurious, but not mean. 'At no time
did be ever spend more than -a third of his
salary, and be always was well paid; besides'
having - lucrative benefits. Curious stories
were told of his way of living, and it was
asserted, and believed, that be bad never asked
any body to dinner. His sister, a venerable
maideh; nearly his own ago, lived' with him,
'and seconded his 'constant effort to save.
have 'not beard the amount of his
wealth, but he can scarcely have loft
behind him less than $150,000. He was
a man to save money out of any income,
and seemed rather to cherish the reputation
of being a miser, as it protected him from
being victimized by applications for loans.'
He wait far from heartless, however, as ho
sometimes, even without being solicited, would
volunteer relief to distressed members of his
profession. On these occasions, be would
never give loss than s26;—relief, he thought,
to be usefhl, should be to a greater amount
than alms., Five dollars would serve a very
temporary purpose, while twenty-five would
support a man for two or three weeks, "until
something turned itp."
' For many years, as Treasurer of the Drury
Lane /fund, MaLEIt made the annual after
dinner oration, and geeerallk succeeded in
tiring his auditors before be bad half finished.
Ho was prosy, dull, and diffuse, but fancied
himself Demosthenean.
A popular actor, always well paid, and,
even without any engagement, comparatively
wealthy, JOAN PRITT amity 'had, one mix-
fortune—he was the victim of hypochondriails
to a remarkable and painful degree. He was
also kemarkably reserved in cOmpany, suffer
ing under manvaise hante to an extent almost
beyond credibility. He would make a circuit
of a mile to avoid seeing and speaking even to
an ordinary acquaintance. On the stage he
:was all beetle; life, • and garrulity—but ship
:the motley from him, and he was shy, silent,
and reserved. Consequently, autr.u'r rarely
ventured into society. Ho lived, like a hermit,
in his almost solitvy hanse. Be' would some
times let weeks pass without 'exchanging a
void With his sister, who presided at lila frugal
board tbr over forty years. Conscious how
