Now If that man was a materialist,
when the great horn sounds on the
last day and he begins moving around
and gives that can a kick he'll he the
most astonished spirit In that neigh
borhood. Oil City Derrick.
It turns out that Gen. Grant had a
much narrower escape on his return
voyage from Mexico to Galveston than
was even supposed at the time. Since
the vessel arrived at New Orleans an
Investigation has show that she was so
badly damaged that nothing hut con
summate seamaushlp kept her afloat.
A great many are coming to the con
clusion that the ex-President bears a
charmed life. He has certainly been
remarkable fortunate thus far In escap
ing death.
There is some danger that Penn
sylvania will not long hold the mo
nopoly of the oil supply of the world
which It has practically held for
twenty yeurs. Telegraphic dispatches
show the discovery of a ninety barrel
well in Alabama and promising
borings in Prussia. Petroleum Is
kuown to exist, too, in Hanover,
Austria, Southern Russia, Asia Minor,
and. in several districts in the far
west.. Petiolium aud its products
liave become of such universal value
that these discoveries are of great im
portance, because from the nature of
the product it is not probably that
its supply in any locality is inex
haustibly, or that it will for a long
period of years continue to flow to the
surface as it has done since its dijeov
cry. Ex.
Mr. Wallace and his highly vir
tuous Democratic colleagues of the
Senate committee, appointed to Inves

have discovered that the National
Republican congressional committee
expended $100,000 during the cam
paign, 898,000 of which were received
from persons in the employ of the
Government. There are supposed to
be about 80,000 Federal officeholders
most of whom are Republicans. These
officials contributed on an average
1.16 to the congressional campaign
fund. It is ouite evident that tliii

extravagance. Nevertheless, Mr.
Wallace Is greatly shocked that the

Decapitated on the Wallows.
Washington, April 2 A terrible
painful scene attended the execution
of James Madison Wyatt Stone, in the
Jail-yard here to-day. The gallows
was located in an enclosed space at
the northeast corner of the building,
aud was twenty-five feet high, with
a platform ten feet square and a drop
of about five feet. The rope, to which
a trigger was attached, . was concouled
after leaving the gallows, in a square
bor running into the kitchen, and it
was from this point that the trap was
spruVig. At 1:10 the noose was placed
arouiid his neck, with the knot under
the l)eft ear. The signal was given
and t'be drop fell. The body came to
the ground, and it was at first sup
posed that the head had slipped
through the noose, but In an instant
thereafter the head, which had been
entirelj' severed from the body and
remained in the noose feel about
four feet from the bood. Blood
spurted from the body and spattered
the beaims of the gallows, but In two
minutesll muscular action had
ceased. If was picked up by one of
the physicians present, and the face
