tracts of individuals, and the bonds,

be paid according to the understand
ing between the Government and the

State Fair at Erie.
On Monday, Sept. 23d, the twenty
fifth annual exhibition of the Penna.
State Agricultural Society will com
mence at Erie, and continue five days,
closing on Friday, the 27th.
From indications thus far, the forth
coming display will be one of the
grandest and most varied ever pre
sented under the auspices of the So
ciety. It includes a large number of
Imported, thorough bred and fine-bred
horses, herds of short horn, Ilolstein,
Alderney and other cattle, the choicest
breeds of sheep, Swine, &c, together
with a mechanical, vegetable, floral
and domestic collection seldom brought
together in any community. Large
buildings, additional stabling and
shedding have been erected, and all
conveniences supplied for the accom
modation of exhibitors and visitors
Excursion tickets will be sold at greatly
reduced rates on all railroads centering
at Erie.
The .Standard Dollar.
Washington, Sept. 7. The Secre
tary of the treasury has addressed the
following notice to the United States
treasurer:

exchange standard silver dollars for

Ben. Butler Nominated for Governor.
Boston, Sept. 11. The State Con
vention of the independent greenback
party of Massachusetts met to-day,
nearly one thousand delegates occupy
ing the scats.
Among the delegates was one lady,
Mrs. Josephine R. Stone, of Boston.
Hon. B. F. Butler was nominated for
Governor on a rising vote, and three
cheers were given for the nominee.
The resolutions which were adopted
unanimously call on the people to de
clare their independence of false guides
and regain the priceless rights be
queathed to us by our patriotic sires j
declare that an economical govern
ment cau and shall be established ; de
mand the immediate repeal of the re
sumption act, and that the public
lands be reserved for actual settlers ;
oppose the letting out of convict la
bor; demand that all persons shall
have the right to deduct from the value
of their estates the sum of the mort
gage thereon, and said mortgages
should be assessed to the persons to
whom they are due. It Is further
Resolved, That the liberties of this
people Imperatively demand that the
far-reaching and deadly hand of capi
tal as it appears in the infamous moil
opoly known as the Associated Press
must be torn from the throat of public
intelligence. The telegraph companies
must be forced to sell the daily news
upon equal terms to any paper.

M. T. Reedy, of Wallacetown, Clear
field county, was arrested on Thurs
day, the 29th ult., by a U. S. Marshal,
on a charge of taking a letter or pack
age from the P. O. at rhillipsburg, bo
fore tho same had been delivered to the
person to whom it was directed, with
a desire to obstruct the correspondence
and pry into the business and secrets
of another. Mr. B. was taken to
Johnstown, and after a hearing was
placed in $1,000 bonds to appear at the
October term of U. S. Court for trial.
The prisoner explained the trouble by
stating that he had been instrumental
in capturing some of the friends of the
complainant who were engaged In
counterfeiting, and that the prosecU'
tion is a matter of revenge.

Notes' of News.
The Episcopal House of Bishops
met in New York Sept. 4. They
unanimously deposed Bishop Mc
Coskry from the ministry.
Twenty-two tons of fine silver,
amounting to $800,000, were shipped
last week from New York from the
United States assay offlee to the
Philadelphia mint for tho coinage of
silver dollars. Total amount of silver
shipments to date from 24th of July,
$2,100,000.
Negroes In New Orleans believe
the height of tho fever has been
reached. Tneir faith Is founded on a
prophecy. Last New Year's day a
negro sorcerer in an incantltation said
that a plague would come over the
south this summer with terrible ef
fect, killing whites and negroes alike.
It would continue, he claimed, until
tho number of degrees registered daily
on the thermometer should be
equalled by tho number of daily
deaths. During the past few days it
seems there has been a singular coin
cidence between the death rate and
the height of the thermometer, and
the negroes are reported to be very ju
bilant and confident that the crisis has
been reached and that deaths will now
decrease in number.
At Rosendale, New York, two
men named Cummings and Miller
have a controversy for the possession
of the quarries of the New York ce
ment company. The difficulty cul
mined In a fight between the contes
ants and their men. The Hon. Isaac
Becker, manager for Cummings, and
his son were both shot and danger
ously wounded. The Cummings party
were finally driven away, after about
thirty shots were fired, and the Miller
party, numbering fifty persons, re
main in possession. They are headed
by two sons of Mr. Miller, president
of the company, one of whom is
charged with shooting young Becker.
The Cummings party had prepared
for the attack by laying a mine. Their
battery failed to operate, or a great loss
of life would have ensued. This con
troversy grew out of the company
leasing the quarry to Cummings and
then attempting to regain possession.
Several years have been spent in law
suits.
The Kentucky lotteries have got a
'favorable decision from the Court of
Appeals to the effect that their grants
cannot be repealed by the Legislature.
A Mexican, under arrest for mur
der, was taken from the Texas author
ities by some of his countrymen who
crossed the Rio Grande for that pur
pose. Awarded the Highest Medal at Vienna
and Philadelphia.
