HiNBr A. Parsokb, Jr. Editor THURSDAY, MARCH 20, 18T4. The most notable victory, or rather series of victories over the oontraction ists, was woo ia the House on Moods;. The bill fixing ths volume of legal-tender currency at 1400,000,000 which ha? for some time been in the possession ot tho Ways and MeaDS Committee, was re ported and passed by an overwhelming majority under a suspension of the rules. Mr. Dawes, who reported the bill, himself moved an amendment fix ing the limit at $356,000,000, which was voted down by 172 to 70. Another amendment making tho limit $382,000, fhared a like fate, the vote being 71 yens and 172 nays The vote on the passage of the bill was 163 to 77. After such an Appomattox tho money mono polists should surrender. Tnic Constitutional Convention of Ohio, says the Pittsburgh Telegraph, is not inclined to go to extremes on the temperance question. The committee to whom the snbject was referred has reported a proposition to submit to a separate vote of the people the question of License or No License. The section, if License is adopted, will authorize the issuing of licenses to trafic in spirituous, vinous, or malt liquors under such regu lations as shall be prescribed by law. If the proposition is defeated the section will forbid licenses to traffic in intoxicat. ing liquors, but permit the General As sembly to provide by law against evils resulting therefrom. This is the present law in Ohio. Tho Constitution pro hibits the Legislature from passing a license law, and all tho local govern ments have power to prohibit the liquor trrffic within their limits. This has been a good winter for slid ing down hill in Porllaud, Maine, as thirteen broken arms and legs attest. The Iowa Senate has adopted a joint r solution ot the House ior a cnnstitn tional amendment giving women the right ot suffrage by a vote of 2 1 to 1. Michigan ought to be li'ippy. The Illinois Legislature has adopted an amendment to the criminal code "pro viding that the sentence of death, when passed upon a criminal, shall be inflicted within ten days next succeeding the opening day of the following session of the Supreme Court. This wfll give an opportunity for the review yf errors, without tho necessity of a stay of pro ceedings. The influence of forests in drawing moisture from the heavens may be judged from the experience f San Diego, California. Previous to I SOS there was yearly a rainy season, which made the soil nourishing and productive1 In 1SG8 a destructive fire swept over the greater part of tho country, cutting down the luxuriant chapparel, and black ening the hills. Since then there has been no rainy season at San Diego. DHMansBaBHaBBnHnn The Best "Paper! Try IU! Ayer's Cathartic Pills, for tho relief and cure of all derange- ments in the stom ach, liver, and bow els. They arc a mild aperient, and an excellent purgative, lluinir imrciv veee- table, they contain no mercury or mine ral whatever. Much Berioua sickness and suffering is prevent ed bv their timeiv use; and every tnnuly should have them on lmnll for their protection and relief, when required. Long experience has proved them to be the lat est, suri't.t, mitl best of all tho fill with which the market abounds. I!y their oceaaionnl una, the blood is puriileil, tho corruptions of the sys tem expelled, obbtructions removed, and the whole machinery of life restored to its healthy activity. Internal organs which become closed and elupjriMh are cleansed by Ayer' filln, and stimuluted into action. Thus incipient disease is changed into health, the value of which change, when reckoned on the vast multitudes who enjoy it, ran hardly be computed. Their sugar couting makes them pleasant to take, and preserves Uieir virtues unimpaired for ouv length of time, so that they are ever fresh, and perfectly reliable. Although searching, they aro mild, aud operate without disturbance to the constitution, or diet, or occupation. Full directions aro fit in on the wrapper to each box, how to use them as a Family l'hysic, and for the following complaints, which tiiwo Villi rapidly cure: For lyitMiia or Indlg-eetlon, T.letlrss nnaa, E.anaruor and Cow of Appetite, they should be taken moderately to stimulate the stom ach, and restore its healthy tone and action. 1 For Silver Complaint and its various symp toms, Btliou Headache, Alclt Head, che. Jaundice or Green SU-kneee, Is 1 1, lous Colic and Bilioua levers, they should be judiciously taken for each case, to correct tho diseased action or remove the obstructions which cause It. For Dysentery or Diarrhoea, but one mild dose is generally required. For Itlieuniatism. Clout, ravel. Pal- Citation of tho Heart, luin In tha ide, Hack and M.oln, they should be coutin nously taken, as required, lo change the diseased action of the system. Vt itb such change those complaints disappear. Fur Dropsy and Dropsical Swellina-a, they should be taken in large and froquent doses to produce the effect of a drastio purge. For Muppreaaion. a large dose should be taken, as it produces the desired effect by sym pathy. As a Dinner Pllt, take one or two Pillt to promote digestion and relieve tbe stomach. An occasional dose stimulates the stomach and bowels, restores the appetite, and Invigorates the system. Hence it Is often advantageous where no serious derangement exists. One who feels tolerably well, often finds that a dose of these J li makes him feel decidedly better, from their cleansii g and renovating effect on tbe digestive apparatus. rRKFi.RKD BT Dr. if.
