THURSDAY. APRIL 10, 1873.
The Atlantic
Our exchanges como to us now laden
with accounts of that terrible accident to
the steamer Atlantio of the White Star
Lino, which occurred on the 1st of April,
The vessel started from Liverpool on
March 20, and according to the Cap
tain's statement during the first part of
the passage had favorable winds. On
the 24 th, 25th, and 2Gth ult, the (ship
experienced heavy gales which brought
her down to one hundred and eighteen
miles a day. On the 3lRt of March
the enginoct's report showed about one
hundred and twenty-seven tons of coal
on b3ard. The Captain then judged the
ship to be 4G0 miles cast of Sandy Hook
and as the was steaming eight knots an
hour he concluded the risk to great to
push on for fear the ship in the event o!
a gale, would be shut out from any port
of supply, so he decided to beat up for
Halifax. At 1 p. id, on the 31st iast.,
Bambro Island was distant 170 miles,
the ships speed ranging from 8 to 12
knots an hour. At midnightihe Cup
taiu judged tho ship to have made 122
miles, which would place her 48 miles
south of Sarnbro. In the Captains ac
count he says further:
sMy first intimation of the catastrophe
was the striking of the ship on Marrs
Islands and remaining there fast. Tho
sea irauicdiatly swept away all the port
boats The officers went to their stations
and commenced .clearing away the
weather boats. Roskets were fired by
tho second officer. Before tho bouts
cold be cleared, only ten minutes hav
ing elapsed, the ship keeled heavily to
poit, rendering the starboard boats use
less.
Seeing that no help could be got from
boats, I got the passengers into the rig
ging and outdide rails and encouraged
them to go forward where tho ship was
highest nnd lest exposed to the water.
The third officers, Mr. Brady, Quarter
masters Owens and Speakman, by this
time having established couiniuuieatioti
with the outlying rock about lorty yards
distant by means of a.line, got four other
lines to the rock, along which about 200
persons passed bctweeu the rock and tho
shore. The passage was 100 yards in
width, and a rope iras successfully pass
ed across this, though many were drown
ed in the attempt. At 5 a. m. the
first boat appealed from the island, but
was too small to be of any assistance.
Through the exertions of Mr. Brady
tho islanders were arroused, and by (j
a. m. three larger boats came to their
assistance. By their efforts all that re
mained on the side ot the phip and on
the rook were landed in safety and cared
for by a poor fisherman, named Clancy,
and his daughter. During the day the
survivors, to the number of 429 were
drafted off to the various houses scattered
about, the resident magistrate, Edmund
Ryan, rendering valuable assistance.
The chief officer having gut up into
the mizzen rigging, the sea cut off his
escape. He stood tor six hours by the
roiueu who had uecn placed in the rig
ging. The sea was too high to attempt
fcis rescue. t 3 p. r.i. a clergyman,
iiev. M. Ancient, succeeded in getting
liim a line ami totting him off. Many
of the passenger of the r.aloon nud steer
age died in tho rigging from tho cold,
among the number was tho purser of
the slnp.
Bclore the boats went out I placed
two ladies in a life-boat, but finding the
boat useless, carried them to the maiu
rigging and loft them, aud went to en
courage others to get forward on the side
of the ship. At this junoture the boil
ers exploded and tho boat rolled over to
leeward. The ship then was lying on
her beam ends. Finding myself useless
there, I rent to tako the ladies forward,
but found them gouc, nor did I see them
atterwardsr Many passengers r.t this
timo could not be stimulated to any et
iort tc savo themselves but lay in the
rigging aud died from fright and ex
posure. I reraainded on tho side encouraging,
helping, ancl directiug until about 15
wero landed, when becoming useless, I
lelt the ship, two other boats being close
to, and embarked the remainder. On
rcaohing shore, I dispatched Mr. Brady,
the third oftoer, off to llnlifax, across
the country fo telegraph the news of
the tlisRster, and obtain assistance, Mr'
Marrow, the Cunard Line agent, prompt"
ly responded, and sent two steamers
with provisions to convey tho suvivors
to Halifax, where they will be cared for
and forwarded to New York, the first
opportunity, iu charge of the first and
fourth officers. The third officer and
four men being left at the inland to take
care of the dead as they camo ashore.
Capt. S. Hendon, diver, has received
provisional authority as to the salvage
and material. Tho second offiocr was
lost, with No. 30 life-boat."
The Atlantio started from Liverpool
with nearly a thousand passengers on
board, out of which from 500 to COO
persons fouud a watery grave. The
news of this terrible disaster spread over
the whole country like wild fire, casting
a gloom over all minds. Immagination
carries us to the fated steamer, Atlantio
do that dreadful night, and we see cling
ing to the rigging, nearly a thousand
human beings, despariug, and dying.
And it sends a thrill through the stout
est heart, and causes the cheek of the
bravest to blunoh. By this terrible dis
aster many homes are made desolate
aod many persons who were anxiously,
awaiting the return of their loved ones,
are doomed to bitter disappointment.
Of all the sad andj heartrending causali
ties of the sea, this one seems to stand
out pre-eminentlyabove all the rest, as
tne saddest.
There must be some cause for this,
and lrom the newspaper accounts it
seems that a short supply of coal, and
the ignorence or carelessness of the
Captain, are tho prime causes, and now
an investigation is talked of.
Thus it always is, hundreds of hnman
beings are ushered into eternity, at a mo
ments warning by a railroad accdent, or
from causality of the sea; an investiga
tion is had, and perhaps some officer is
suspended, or discharged, this seems to
satisfy the publio mind, and it sinks into
lethargy, until again aroused by some
torribls holocaust.
A Southern journal bays of the cotton
crop for this season : "The noney paid
for it in its raw state will not fall short
of 8330,000,000. Of this sum about
835,000,000 will have gone to speclators
aad hrst purchasers leaving 82i)O,0U0,'
000 to the produoers. Alubama's share
is nearly $o5,000,000 estimating her
crop at 400,000 bales."
According to tho report of the State
Superintendent of Common Schools for
1872 we find that the State, outside of
Philadelphia, had during the year 14,'
415 sshools; 16,780 teachers; an attend
ouce of 699,802 pupils,an average of
ibiflzt; an average school term of six
months. She paid her male teachers
840.55 per month, and her female teach
ers $.11.90. She expended for school
houses 82,555,637.39; for tuition 83,-
221,421.78, for contingencies, 8863,-
