Ths People's Monthly for Decem
ber 1872, for some unaccountable rea
son is just Tcceived. It is a splendid
number both for its engravings and its
reading matter. We doubt very much
whether its equal as an Illustrated paper
lias ever appeared out of New York.
This is emphatically a Western preduc
tion and deserves well of the reading
public in the West. Agents are wanted
everywhere, and its agencies pay well.
Send for circulars. It will be sent three
months on trial for 25 cents. Yearly
subscription 81,50. Address "People's

Ppesentatio.n. Thomas Metzgar,
one of the gentlemanly conductors on the
P.& E. R. R., was the recipient on the
1st iust (New Year) of a splendid gold
cbuiu and chur.n, worth 6100. The
present was the gift of Mr. Metzgar's
triends at this point on the line of the
road. The prpsentation speech was
delivered by John Wa'sh, Esq., one of
the employees of the company, and was
an eloquent and touching expression of
the friendship cherished for him by all
who know Mr. Metzgar, and all who
know him, that he is a most faithful and
accommodating public servant. The pre
sentation took place at this point, and
will long be remembered by those who
witnessel it, as a short time well and
pleasantly spent. Long may the recipi
ent live to be delighted by this beauti
ful remembrancer of the high esteem
und friendship of his friends.

patrons that it is kept fully up to
its high standard ; and it is the on

scalp, bv its use, becomes white and
clean. It removes all eruptions and
dandruff, and, by its tonic proper
ties, prevents the hair from falling
out, as it stimulates and nourishes
the hair-glands. By its use, tho
hair grows thicker and stronger.
In baldness, it restores the capillary
glands to their normal vigor, and
will create a new growth, except in
extreme old age. It is the most
economical Hair-Dressing ever
used, as it requires fewer applies

NE MILLION OF LlUt U
Is one of the most temarVa ble 1
this remarkable age, not that so m
persons are the victims of dyspepsia or
digestion, but its willing victims. N
we would not be unaersiooa to say mat ;
one regards dyspepsia with favor, or feels
disposed to rank it among the luxuries of
life. Far from it. Those who have ex
perienced its torments would scout such ac
idea. All dread it, ana wouia giaaiv

Mark Tapley, .who was jony unuer an m
trying circumstances in whicn na
placed, never hal an attack of dyspepsia,,
or his jolity would have speedily forsaken
him.
Of all the multifarious diseases to whiefc .
the human system is liable,
there is perhaps no one so
generally prevalent as dyspepsia. There
are diseases more acute and painful, and
which more frequently prove ratal, put
none the effects of which are so depressing
to the mind and so positively distressing to
the bed. If there is a wretched Deing id
the world it is
A CONFIRMED DYSPEPTIC.
We have said that dyspepsia is perhaps
the moBt universal of human diseases.
This is imphatically the case in the United
States. Whether this general prevalence
is due to the character of the food, the
method of its preparation, or the hasty
manner in which it is usually swallowed,
is not our province to explain. The great
fact with which we are called to deal a
this:
DYSPEPSIA PREVAILS
almost univct sally.
Nearly every other person you meet!

this not the case, why so many sufferers,
when a certain, speedy and safe remedy is
within the easy reach of all who will
avail themselves of it? But says a dys
peplio: What is this remedy? to which we
reply: This great allevator of human
suffering is almoet as widely known as the
English languace. It has allayet the
agonies of thousands, and is to-day carry

Dr. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN BITTERS.
Would you know more of the morits of
this wonderful prcpaiation than can be
learned irom the experience of others?
Try it yourself, and when it has failed to
fulfil the assurance of its efficacy given by
the proprietor, then abandon faith in it.
LET IT BE REMEMBERED,
first of all, that HOOFLAND'S GERMAN
BITTERS is o arum beverage.
They are composed wholly of the pure
juice or vital principle of roots. This is
not a mere assertion. The extracts from
which they are compounded are prepared by
one of the ablest of German chemists. Their
effects can be beneficial only in all easea of
the billiary system. Hootland's German
Bitters stand without an equal, aetine
promptly and vigorously upon the liver;
they remove its torpidity and cause health
nil secretiou or bite thereby supplying
the stomach with the most indispensable
elements of sound digestion in proper pro-
puriioas.
Ihey purify the blood, cleansinir the
vital fluid j." all hurtful impurities and su
planting them with the elements of genuine
bealtliluliiess.
Now, there are certain classes ot per
sons to whom extreme Bitters are not only
unpalatable, but who nnd it impossible to
take them without positive discomfort. For
such Dr. HOOFLAND'S GERMAN TONIO
has been specially prepared. It is intended
for use where a slight alcoholle stimulant
ie require 1 in conneot.on wit), H. u.
known Tonic properties of the pure Gor
man Bitters.
HOOFLAND'S TONIC
acts with almost marvcloas effect. It not
only stimulates the flaetrinr and wasting
enprfvitfl Iml inoiffAi..!.. on4
strengthens its action upon the Liver
and Stomach thorough, nerhans lexa
prompt than the Bitters, when tbe same
quantity is taken is none the less certain.
Indigestion, Billiousnrss, Physical or Ner
vous prostration, yield readily to ite po
tent influence. It gives the invalid a new
and stronger hold upon life, temnves de
pression of spirit, and inspires cheerful
neBs. But Dr. Hoofland's benefactions to
the human race are not confined to his
celebrated GERMAN BITTERS, or his
invaluable Tokic. He has prepared an
..tin... .wi:l ui,;., : . : 1 1
FODOl'HYLLIN PILLS, a perfect substi
tute for mercury without any of mercury's
evil qualities.
These wonderful Pills, which are Intend
ed to act upon the Liver, are mainly torn.
posed of l'odophyllin, or the vital princi
ple of the inaudrake root. It is the medi.
cinal virtues of this health-rivin nlant in
a perfectly pure and highly concentrated
form. The l'odophyllin acts directly on
the Liver, stimulating its functions and
causing it to make its billiary secretions in
regular and proper quantities. The inju
rious results which invariably follow th
use of mercury is entirely avoided by
their use. But it is not upon the Liver
only that their powers are exerted. The
extract of Mandrake contained in them is
skillfully combined with four other ex
tracts, one of which acts upon the stomach,
one upon the upper bowels, one upon the
lower boweh, and prevents any griping
effect, thus producing a pill that influences
the entire digestive and alimentary system,
in tin equal ami iiarmoniOM manner, and
iia action entirely tree from nausea, vomit
ing or griping pains common to all other
purgatives.
Possessing these much desirable qualities
the l'odophyllin becomes invaluable as a
FAMILY MEDICINE.

cient in action, and when used in connec
tion with Dr. Hoofland's German Bitters
or Tonic, may be regarded as certain spe
cifics in all cases of Liver Complaint, Dys-

the system is ordidaly subject. The

act upon the stomach and bowels, carrying;
off improper obstructions, while the Bitters

invigorate the fnrae, give tone and appe
tite to the stomach, and thus build up the
invalid anew.
