SPEINGOKCEENS FEOM THE SOUTH Office of Pittsburg Dispatch; 1 -Feidat. April 6, 18K9L J The last week of March showed a decided improvement in the retail vegetable and fruit trade over previous weeks. At the Diamond Market stalls reports were very bright for that week. Unfavorable weather as April dawned, gave a slight backset to trade, so that this week has scarcely kept tip the record. There are, however, signs to-day that the ground lost the first half of the week will be recovered. A pleasant Saturday will bring all the business that market people can wellattend to, judging from the activity to day. Green stuff is steadily drifting toward prices within the reach of the aTerage consumer's pocketbook. Southern strawberries and home raised cucumbers are much below last Satur day's prices. At the fish and oyster stalls a good week's trade is reported. The season of frozen fish is now about over. About all of the frozen ar ticle now for sale are herring. The supply of fresh fish is good, and the demand equally cood. Lovers ol lake and ocean products hav ing long been shut up to the frozen article in dulge more freely when the fresh appears. This has improved demand the past week. A leading dealer speaking of Lenten Influ ence on the fish trade, said: "Our business is usually at its best afier Lent is over. What the Christian fast does in benefiting our trade is that it creates a demand for our products at a time of the year when otherwise business would be at its worst" Activity at the fish stalls is offset by quiet ness at the butcher stalls. There is no change in the price of choice cuts of beef, though the rough parts are sold at concessions. Spring chickens from the Sunny South have put in an appearance the past week, and read ilv bnnjr $2 00 per pair. It has thus far been impossible to secure enough to supply the de mand. The scarcity is attributed byone dealer to the enormous consumption at Washington during the inauguration week. Every lour years there appears to be a shortage in this line immediately after the induction of a new President. Young pigeons are on the stalls at H 50 a dozen and snipe at S3 00. Butter and eggs are In full supply and at prices a shade lower than a week ago. Good country rolls are to be had at 25c with 40c as the outside price for fancy. Florists report an improved demand for ar ticles in their line without any change In prices. In almost all the lines of market basket ma terials greater activity is reported, with a gen eral dntt toward lower prices as the time for new garden stuff draws nearer. Stay Wheat Lower and July Higher Both Options Active and Unsettled Rom and Oats Firm Pork Steady Xard Steps Up. Chicago. "Wheat was active and -unsettled to-day and was controlled almost wholly by local influences. It was the general belief that the operator who has been long of May, and whom the combination or bull interest have been endeavoring' to force out, had sold, through different brokers to-day, and that the off erings were taken up by clique brokers. Trading, it is claimed, was heavy. At the open ing the market was unsettled, and alter fluctu ating for some time sold off to a point 2Je be low yesterday's closing, recovered some and closed about Ho lower. July, although opening a shade weaker, de veloped more or less strength, and advanced ifi above inside figures and closed a higher than yesterday. It was claimed that the same parties who have been credited with being con nected with the bull side of May wheat, had been theprincipal buyers lor July and sup posed to be for the purpose of covering short sales made some time ago at higher prices. Corn ruled quiet, but firm. A "COSTLY PROJECT. Objections of Citizens to the Widening of Diamond Street HARD FACTS ABOUT MOETGAGES. A Bemote Western Totra Boasts of Supe . riority OTer the Gas City, STOCKS STB0KG AND PETE0LE0H WEAK Concerning the project for widening Dia mond street, a gentleman who desired his name omitted said yesterday: "It would be a costly improvement, and has, and will continue to encounter, determined opposi tion. It would take 25 feet from every lot on the upper side ot the street from Smith field to Diamond Market, and involve the practical destruction of every honse, some of which are large and costly. The rear part of the Opera House would be torn away. This wonld involve a large amount of money. In view of the fact, as generally understood, that it is a speculative move ment, I think there should be no attempt to carry it out without fall consideration of all the interests affected. In regard to the cost, justice to all concerned wonld seem to require that it should be met by the property benefited, and that no part of it should be laid upon the public, as some have proposed." The difference in the mortgage business be tween Pittsburg and some ot the Western cities Indianapolis and Chicago for example is at once striking and instructive. Here the money thus obtained is nsed for the purchase and betterment of real estate, which has a fixed value an.d is always worth what it costs. There it is used to a large extent in speculation. The cities mentioned, and some others in the Wild West are plastered all over with mortgages for which there is nothing to show except stock certificates and bonds of various wildcat enterprises, whose inflated values divest them almost entirely of the element of security. They could not hold up under a financial pinch. Pittsburg could. Old citizens still maintain that the flood of 1832 was the greatest ever known in this part of the country, and as.proof point to the fact that a steamer drew up alongside of the old Robin son mansion in Allegheny and took furniture ont of the third story windows. It then crossed to this side of the rjver, steaming up Penn ave nue as far as Fifth street where it discharged its cargo. The water wheri Hotel Anderson stands was four feet deep. During the 18S4 flood the depth of water at the same place was not over two feet A Tacoma, W. T., paper, reproducing an ar ticle from The Dispatch in reference to the movement in favor of a Real Estate Exchange here, pokes fun at Pittsburg, saying that it is missing golden opportunities of making a great name for itself by much talking and little doing. It admires our conservatism but con demns what it calls our lack of enterprise. Our Far West cotemporary should remember that great bodies move slowly, and that al though Tacoma organized a Real Estate Ex change while our people were talking about one, Pittsburg will eventually reach the stick ing point and come to the front with an institu tion that will have national weight and influ ence. It would be unwise, however, to let the project sleep mncb, longer. The magnitude of the real estate business demands an exchange. Dealings cannot much longer be satisfactorily transacted any other way. The following may Rive a valuable hint to some one of the many able electricians in Pittsburg: It is stated that a traveling electric light has come into use in Germany. It some what resembles the steam fire engine, the tank, boiler, engine and dynamo being mounted upon a wagon, which can be drawn by a team of horses to any desired location. When the ap paratus reaches its destination, arc lamps are raised upon poles stayed with wires fastened to stakes driven in the ground. The whole plant is simple, and stated to work satisfactorily. Pabis Rentes, 85f 47c for the account THE PEDDLING POLICY Of the Pikers Bringing Rain Upon the Oil Business. Yesterday was one of the dullest days of the year on the Oil Exchange. There was no vim in the market The opening was weak at 90. Moderate buying in New York and Oil City lent a bullish tinge to the proceedings, and the price went up to 90. it then slumped to 9 advanced to 90, where it hung for some time, and closed at 90 the same figures at which it started. A broker said: "The legitimate situation justifies dollar oil. bnt the pikers won't have it. They ignore statistics for the sake of profits that are about equal to a day's wages for a mechanic. When stocks are weak they give that as an excuse for their conduct; wben tbey are strong they have nothing to say. I believe if there were only a bucketful of oil on top of ground tbey would attempt to bear it This peddling policy is ruining the business." A. B. OHAMB OF BASE. A Complete Revolution in the Speculative Slarket Prominent Houses Among the Bayers The Active List Higher With Few Exceptions. New Yoek, April 5. The trading in the stock market to-day gave additional evidence of the complete change in tbe speculative tem per, which has occurred during the past two days, and tbe buying to-day was by the most prominent houses, while the sellers were princi pally tbe local bear contingent there being a marked falling off in the selling orders received from out of town, especially from Boston and Chicago. The market was decidedly broader, tie dealings being extended to more stocks than usual of late, and the leaders did not show such a large proportion of the aggregate trans actions. A notable feature was the resump tion of the marked advances in the specialties, of which several that have been dormant for months became conspicuous for their improve ment Tnere was a moderate volume of busi ness at the opening, and first prices were gen erally from Vi per cent higher than last evening's figures, but except in Jersey Central and Texas Pacific the opening prices were not maintained. The pressure was not long maintained, as tbe demand for stocks became more general, and, before tbe end of the first hour, the entire list rallied and was quickly brought up to some thing above the opening figures. There was a large crowd trading in Atcbiton, and it became the most active stock on the list the reports that the new names to be voted for at the next meeting are very strong ones, togetber with the fact tbat the closing of tbe books is set for next Tuesday, stimulating the purchasing of tbe stock. The market quieted down toward noon, but tbe upward tendency still continued, and in the afternoon the movement became more pronounced, with Missouri Pacific, Burlington, Rock Island and Atchison specially con spicuous. Later the reports that the earnings of the St Paul for the quarter would show an increase in tbe net of about $1,100,000 brought that stock more to the front and It moved up sharply to ward delivery hour. Louisville and Nashville was also higher on the increase ot 17 per cent in its March earnings, and at tbe same time the Coalers, which had been rather sluggish throughout the forenoon, moved up with the rest ot the list The market finally, closed quiet but strong at or near tbe best prices of the day. Among the specialties which became conspicuous for their advances were Pittsburg and Western preferred, Pullman, Milwaukee, Lake Shore and Western preferred, Nickel Plate 1st preferred. Consolidated Oas and San Francisco preferred, while Ohio and Mississippi preferred and Oregon Improvement were tbe weak points in the list With a few unim portant exceptions tbe active list is higher to night Consolidated Oas rose 2, St Paul pre ferred 2, Atchison, Burlington and Missouri Pacific IK and Northwestern a like amount Railroad bonds sympathized with tbe anima tion and strength in shares to-day, and there was a strong tone throughout tbe day, with a very fair volume of business, the sales of all issues aggregating u.ooo, uuu, out 01 wnicu ine Texas Pacific seconds furnished J221.0U0.the Louisville and Nashville fives $102,000, and the Reading first incomes $100,000. Three Seasons Why People should buy goods on easy payments: First, it is most impossible for people of moderate means to accumulate enough money to furnish a house properly. Second, that a better class of goods can be purchased than though yon were compelled to pay spot cash. Third, having your house properly fur nished it is an encouragement to live and be more happy; you take more pleasure in keeping good goods in nice order, and by so doing are considered good housekeepers. The satisfaction is complete; your friends, yourself and yourdealerare satisfied, sowhat more is desired? Be wise in your genera tion, and let Hopper Bros. & Co. furnish your homes.
