REPUBLICAN TRIBULATIONS.
The Christian Street role.
The crooked and unshapely stick which
has been lying for several days past at the
comer of Christian and East Walnut
streets was finally raised last night after
much tribulation. The wicked little Han
cock boys who watched its tedious ascent
with great satisfaction see-sawed en Leb
zelter's beard pile during the progress of
the event and loudly cheered for Hancock,
te the great disgust of the geed little Gar
field boys whose fathers and brothers put
up the pole and adorned it with a limp
DeQelyer flag.
The troubles attending the erection of
this pole were numerous and complicated.
After digging down around the gas pipes
and excavating a cart lead of rock they
made a rather shallow hole for the pole te
rest in. In the afternoon the faithful
gathered together te put it up, and man
aged te raise the top of it about fifteen feet
from the ground, but could get it no
higher. Their thoughts then turned nat
urally te Capt. McMellen, the bridge
builder, who en se many former occasions
had helped the party out of tight places.
The captain did net respond, but his faith
ful lieutenant, Jehn A. Wcimcr, seen put
in an appearance with rope and tackle.
Jehn always means business. The ropes
and tackle were get into position in due
time, and shortly after sundown the order
was given te pull away. The ropes tight
ened and up went the pole (a little.)
While all hands were pulling like mad,
the rope parted and the pullers sat down
mera suddenly than they had ever done
before, and some of them turned several
somersaults before they knew what was the
matter. Among the wounded were many
shining lights of Republicanism Corener
Mishlcr, Ed. Ebcrman, six or eight Sam Sam
eons, Valle Heffman, Frank Steinhauscr
and lets of ethers, many of whom
are very sere te-day. Arnica, opedeldoc,
and ether embrocatiens are in great de
mand te-day. The most seriously injured
was the coroner, and it was feared for a
time that he, who has held se many in
quests en ether unfortunates, would him
self form a Kubjectfer one of his deputies.
But he won't for Jthc present, at least.
Well, the repe was spliced, an army of
new recruits was gathered te take the
place of the wounded and the pole was
finally get into a position as nearly up
right as possible. But it is really nearly
as crooked as Garfield's record en the
Credit Mebilicr stealand it shows its crook
edness, no matter from what point you
leek at it.
There were several slight disturbances
during the erection of the pole. A son of
F. J. Steinhauscr was struck en the check
with a stone and a lad named Brccn, aged
about 15 years was severely choked by
Big Ben Samson, ex-cigar boss at the pri
son, because he hurrahed for Hancock. We
arc told that Brecn's father has entered or
will enter a suit for assault and battery
against Samson.
The pole en North Charlette fctreet in
the Ninth ward, in front of the residence
of Constable Flick the fleet-footed
Audie " was Fet up last night without
much excitement. It is net very tall and
is very knotty a kind of "rough dia
mond," as the Era says.
Dump It.
The Republicans of the Seventh ward
have made three dibits te raise a pole at
the "Dump" but it was no go. After
lying two weeks in the mud they will cut
it up for fire weed en Wednesday. It is
charged that $12 have been collected for
the raising of this pole and the money
spent for beer. The following "best
workers" expect te get the weed out of
the muddy stick : Harry Hathern, Theo Theo
eore Brown and Niose Iiittonheuso.
THIEVES.
Cellars and Stares Breke.i Opeu.
Last night an unsuccessful attempt was
made te Lrca'i into the store of Milten
Ileidclbaugh about a mile from George
town, Bart township. The burglars breke
a hole through the stone foundation lead
ing te the cellar, but were evidently
frightened off before they accomplished
their purpose, as nothing is missed from
the premises.
They also breke into the cellar of a liouse
net far from llcidelbaugh's and stele a
small quantity of previsions. Our inform
ant did net knew the names of the occu
pants of the premises visited.
Oa Monday night the cellar of the stere
of W. S. Fcrree, in Georgetown was broken
into and some cheese and fine-cut to
bacco were carried outside. Mr. Fcrrcc
hearincra noise came down stairs and preb
ably frightened off the thicves,as the stolen
goods were left by thcm'at the top of the
cellar stairs.
The cellar of Benjamin Fritz, jr., pro
prietor of the Georgetown hotel, was also
entered Monday night and a demijohn of
old rye whisky carried off. Beth of the
above named gentlemen own watchdogs
which they have heretofore regarded as
proof against burglars.
A Disgraced Officer.
Officer Lightncr Fulmcr, of the Fifth
ward, who is filling Constable Killingcr's
place en the police force, by appointment,
made an exhibition of himself en North
Queen street this morning, opposite Gcis
senbergcr's dry goods store. He was
drunk and tried te arrest a man who was net
as drunk as himself; the ether man get away
te the satisfaction of a large number of
spectators who freely vented their indig
nation at Fulmer's condition. The Mayer,
(who, in company with Messrs. B. J. Mc
Grann and R. n. Brubakcr, is visiting the
Speedwell stock farm te-day) will have his
attention called te his appointee's miscon
duct as seen as he returns te the city and
Fulmcr will doubtless be removed from a
position which he has net filled with credit
te himself or anybody e lse.
The Prison Tobacco.
Yesterday the prison inspectors sold at
auction some of the rotten and worthless
tobacco which has been carried along for
years in that institution as geed stock nnd
which the present inspectors refused te
take from the outgoing beard at the prices
at which it was inventoried. The sale was
net very largely attended except by curi
osity seekers and they were gratified te sce
some of the stock, which had been bought
at from 8 te 20 sell for 23 cents a box,
box and all. It had been inventoried at two
cents a pound but was absolutely valueless
even for manure. Perhaps Judge Patter
son's grand jury Steve Grissingcr foreman
will put this into their pipes and smoke
it.
Attempted Bebbery.
Late last night two rather well-dressed
young men visited Mulhatten's restaurant,
iu the basement of the law building in rear
of the court house. Mr. Milten J. Ruth,
the bartender, was about closing the saloon
at the time, and took from the till a con
siderable sum of money. While passing
down en Seuth Duke street, ou his way
home, he was attacked by the mcu who
had a short time before been in the saloon.
lie managed te break away from them and
by a vigorous use of his legs escaped. They
no doubt intended te rob him. lie thinks
he knows who they arc.
Cnarged With Larceny.
Yesterday afternoon William Multz and
Nicholas Meiseusall had a hearing before
Alderman NcConemy te answer a charge
of larceny preferred against them bv
JesephIindcr. The evidence against the

A match game of base ball te take
place this afternoon, en the new grounds

been arranged in short order by the clubs
te contest the " Our Beys" of this place
and the "Furnace Hill" of Middletown.
Circulars have been distributed through
town informing the citizens of what is te
take place and there will probably be a
large attendance en the ball field.
The many friends of Mr. Isaac C. Gitt
assembled in the room of the Columbia
Secial club last evening te participate with
him in the celebration of the anniversary
of his birtle. A sumptuous repast was
spread by Mr. Tayler Gable, the Locust
street caterer, and with this before them
and with the making and listening te the
speeches of one another the company very
pleasantly spent the evening, and retired
wishing Mr. Gitt many returns of the day.
The event being a weekly in place of a
yearly one would be welcomed as often as
it occurred.
Mr. J. II. Keating has been taken from
a freight train and promoted te the position
of passenger brakeman en the Frederick
accommodation train. The employees con
sider the appointment a geed one.
Mr. Calvin Dickinsen, late proprietor of
a confectionery store en North Frent
street, near Black's hotel, left here this
morning en the way passenger train for
San Francisce, Cal., which place will be
his future home. Jehn Heward, a relative
of Dickinsen's, has taken the store. Mr.
Dickinsen is well known te the citizens of
Columbia, he having been in business here
for several years.
An association composed exclusively of
members of the Vigilant fire cempanywill
give a ball in the parlors of the Vigilant
engine house en Saturday evening next.
The boys in the neighborhood of Walnut
and Fifth streets are criminally careless in
throwing steiies, and if they keep up the
habit much longer some person will be
seriously injured and trouble will ensue.
This morning while Mrs. M. C. Kech was
walking near the place mentioned a Hying
stone, fortunately a small one, struck her
en the shoulder. She made inquiries as te
who had thrown the stone, and, we be
lieve, learned the hey's name. What she
will de we knew net, but the lessen should
bear its fruit.
The funeral of Chailes, the son of T. S.
White, who died of diphtheria en Saturday
afternoon last, took place from his father's
residence en Locust street above Fourth,
yesterday afternoon. Interment at Mount
Bethel cemetery.
Every new and then we hear the report
of the killing of a mad deg. Yesterday it
was reported that ene of these rabid
canines was shot and made its exit from
the world near the lower end of town.
Day befoie yesterday we were informed
that .some person had fired seventeen bheia
from a revolver at one of the unlucky ani
mals and ended by taking a club and hit
ting him (the deg) eyer the head, and fin
ishing his existence in that way. About
ene in one hundred of such reports is true.

Mr. S. II. Purple commenced cutting his
tobacco yesterday morning. Many of the
tobacco growers about here Fay that the
crop was never better than it is this year.
The Xew Era representative who wrote

The picnic te McCall's Ferry, prepara
tions for which have been making for a

Mr. Jeseph Kerncr, late a confetiener in
the employ of F. C. Snyder, at Third and
Walnut streets, has accepted a similar po
sition in Philadelphia, and left here last
night with the intention of beginning

Frederick Miller, ene of the assistant
city regulators while at work this morning
at the corner of North Queen and Orange
streets, suddenly fell te the ground in an
unconscious condition, cither from vertigo
or partial paralysis. He recovered con
sciousness seen arid was taken in a car
riage te his home. Dr. Muhlenberg was
sent for te attend him, and en examina
tion it was found that in falling he had
broken his lower jaw bone.
A i:nr.::.vay Prevented.
Yesterday Philip D. Baker, Esq., accom
panied by his wife and three children to
gether with Mrs. Jacob Ilartman and her
mother of Tarrytown, Xew Yerk, took a
drive. One of the wheels breke, the horses
frightened, ene of the bits broke and a ter
rible runaway threatened. Mr. Baker
sprang from the carriage, seized the horses
by the head, and made out te held them
until his family was extricated from the
broken vehicle. Fortunately none of them
received the slightest injury. The horses
wcic eccured, a new bridle and wheel were
borrowed from a ncighbeiing farmer and
the. party reached home without further
unpleasant accident.

Chicago, Aug. 17. The city was crowd crewd
ded te excess te-day, the aggregate popu
lation being new estimated at little
less than a million. The weather is
clear and warm. Thcre were elaborate
decorations along the line of parade. The
column consisted of twenty divisions. The
personnel of the men was striking and
they moved with the precision of a well-
disciplined army. There were sixty-two
bands, including the Marine band from
Washington and the Second regimental
band of San Francisce.
BUCHANAN'S BODY.
Dragging the Delaware Fer It.
Philadelphia, Aug. 17. All morning
the harbor police have been dragging the
Delaware river for the body of the notori
ous " Docter" Buchanan, but without
success. One of the ferry beat hands says
that when he last saw the doctor he was
striking out lively for the lower end of
Windmill island, but whether he is dead or
net it is new conceded that he is out of
the jurisdiction of the United States dis
trict court. He was held in $10,000 bail
last June by the United States commis
sioner and a true bill was found
against him yesterday by the grand
jury for using the mail te assist
in his bogus diploma trade. The
United States district attorney applied
te Judge Butler in court this morning te
have Buchanan's bail forfeited, but con
sideration of the matter was postponed
until Thursday next.

The Republicans of the Twelfth Penn
sylvania Congressional district have un
animously nominated Jes. A. Scranton, for
congress.
Jacob -Zimernian, of Philadelphia, was
found drowned last night in the Lehigh
river near Bethlc hem .
Frest en Sunday night is reported from
various points in the province of Ontario.
Prof. Samuel A. Ncal, colored, professor
of music, mathematics and ether branches
at Avery college, Allegheny City, Pa., and
a member of the Pennsylvania Republican
state central committee, died in Frederick,
Md., yesterday.
The "case of arms" shipped from Mil
ford, for Cerk had one rifle and eight re
volvers. It is officially "watched."
A pest moitem examination attributes
the dcats of Miss Ncilsen te dropsy of the
heart, accelerated by extreme indigestion.
She was seized with sudden cramps while
out driving en Saturday and was conveyed
te the nearest restaurant where she died
en Sunday.
James O'Sullivan, held in Baltimore,
waiting a Pennsylvania requisition en a
charge of outraging a little girl at Hanover,
had a second habeas corpus hearing this
morning, and being released, took a coach
te the depot and fled the town en the first
train cast.

suspended.
Secretary Eyarts i3 urged by the Amer
ican beard of missions te take energetic
action against the arrested murderers of
the missionary, Rev. J. W. Parsons.

On the Mcrsey te-day the Dublin steamer
Langford collided with the White Star
vessel Baltic for New Yerk. The
Longford sank, all her crew and passengers
saved, and the Baltic put back te deck for
repairs.
A barge at Hunters Point, New Yerk
city, laden with Standard oil took liie at
10 a. m., and though well directed
streams partially extinguished the fire the
vessel and cargo are a total less. The
barge was towed out into the stream and
further damage prevented.

Washington, D. C, Aug. 17. Fer the
Middle Atlantic states, falling barometer,
winds mostly cast te southeast, partly
cloudy weather, with possibly occasional
local rain and stationary or higher tem
perature. PUBLIC SALE OF VALUABLE REAL

above is a large mew. A large straw house at
tached te the baru, a carriage house, wagon
shed, corn crib and all necessary outbuildings,
all or which are covered with slate. A large
ice house near the house. The fencing is com
posed of locust pests and chestnut rails. The
property has been thoroughly limed within
the last five years, is in a high state of cultiva
tion, and Is ene of the most desirable farms; in
the county.

Monday, August 16. The receipts of cattle
at the West Philadelphia yard for past week
were 2,000 head; North Philadelphia yard,
440 head. Total, 3,040 head.
Beeves were in moderate demand, and prices
were rather higher than last reported, which
made buyers held off; at neon te-day a num
