aptly remarks, if sustained by the supreme
court, will be notice te all practicing law
yers that they must keep out of newspaper
alliances, or print nothing but what shall
be agreeable te the judges.

cisms from the public press irrespective of
politics and this last act, which seems te

course was open te him, but it was net

supreme court, te which tribunal the case
will of course be taken, gag law will be tri
umphant, se far at least as editing news
papers by members of the bar is con
cerned. If these things
arc right wc may welcome the empire at
once.
Moves te Ketire Him.
Perry County Democrat. Dem.
They will appeal te a higher court for
redress and if they de net get it there the
people of Lancaster county will vindicate
the rights of the press when they come te
cheese Judge Patterson's successor. The
growing "lmncrieusne.ss of the judiciary
needs looking after. If editors who hap
pen te be lawyers dare net write and pub
lish what they deem te be for the public
geed, under a penalty of being disbarred,
then it is high time that presumptuous
judges be retired te private life.
An Indefensible Outrage.
Philadelphia Evening Star, Ind.
If a lawyer acting in editorial capacity
may net criticise the doings of a judge
without incurring such a penalty, it be
comes a matter of interest te knew why an
editor net a lawyer who sharply, but net
unjustly, indulges in criticisms upon judi
cial acts shall net also be punished.
It seems te be an arbitrary and most un
just proceeding. If the criticisms were ill
founded or libelous, the law provided a
remedy. But it is net claimed by Judge
Patterson that they partook of that charac
ter. He defines the offense as " misbeha
vior," and forthwith perpetrates that
which can be regarded only as an indefen
sible outrage.
The Compensation Involved.

The recent extraordinary proceedings of
Judge Patterson, who presides ever the
court at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, suggests
him as the nearest likeness te Justice Shal
low that recent days have known.
The opinion which he rendered in striking
them from the roll of attorneys is a superb
bit of tomfoolery. "If any" wrongs," he
says "are done in trials, it is net for law
yers or newspapers te criticise them ;" and
again, " from malicious and unjust at
tacks by the public press calculated te im
pair public confidence in its integrity and
honest administration of justice the court
is protected, net for the sake of the
judges presiding, but for the sake of
the public and the suitors in the
court." As Patterson admits that the
principle he lays down can only be applied
in such rare instances as that at Lancaster
where an offending editor happens also te
be an attorney of the court, he might have
spared himself the trouble of wishing that
he could deal summarily with every news
paper man who ventures tfr criticise judi
cial proceedings. Of ejmrse, he has
simply extended te the jecliters increased
liberty and occasion te point out that he
is unfit for his place en the bench, and if
that satisfies him, we can't see why they
have any reason te grumble.
