COURT AND PRESS.
RIGHTS OF LAWYERS AND EDITORS.
THE NEWSPAPERS SPEAKING OUT.
The Tenth Installment of their Opinions.
And the Western Press, Toe.
Westmoreland Democrat, Dcm.
The action of the court in this regard,
is severely commented en by the eastern
press as unjust and arbitrary.
Ignorance or Cowardice?
Shippcnsburg Chronicle, Dcm.
Much can be said en both sides of this
question, but as it is a matter for the su
preme court te determine, we prefer te say
nothing further about it.
A Terrible Prospect.
AHoena Sun, Deni.
That Lancaster judge has raised such a
fierce curse about his ears that his
smirched ermine is likely te be tern te
shreds ere it subsides.
The Principle Involved.
Gettysburg Compiler, Dem.
The principle involved is of such impor
tance as te attract attention te the case
throughout the entire country. Se far, in
our newspaper reading, we have failed te
notice a single defence of Judge Patter
son's tyrannical course.
Be Agreeable or He Quiet.
Delaware County Democrat, Dem.
This action, the Philadelphia Ledger very
aptly remarks, if sustained by the supreme
court, will be notice te all practicing law
yers that they must keep out of newspaper
alliances, or print nothing but what shall
be agreeable te the judges.
The Last State Worse than the lrlrt.t.
Carlisle Volunteer, Dem.
The actions of Judge Patterson have al
ready received the severest kind of criti
cisms from the public press irrespective of
politics and this last act, which seems te
have been necessary te keep up the ap
pearance of consistency, is net likely te es
cape the thorough dissection and sound
execration it deserves.
A Blunder and a Crime.
Pett.-ville Chronicle, Dcm.
Judge Patterson knew what lawful
course was open te him, but it was net
summary enough te suit his viudictivc
purpose, and he has bespattered his er
mine te wreak his personal spite. His
unlawful cxcicisc of the judicial power is
the very madness of the insolcnce of office.
If That is the Law, Let it be Known.
Scninten Republican, Hep.
If a member of the judiciary is above
the operations of the law, it had better be
known. If he may thus punish a member
of the bar for his utterances as editor, it
will net require a great stretch of au
thority te punish as severely the cxpress cxpress
ef editors, preachers and citizens who arc
net members of the bar.
Geg Law Triumphant.
Lebanon Advertiser, Dem.
If Judge Patterson is sustained by the
supreme court, te which tribunal the case
will of course be taken, gag law will be tri
umphant, se far at least as editing news
papers by members of the bar is con
cerned. If these things
arc right wc may welcome the empire at
once.
Moves te Ketire Him.
Perry County Democrat. Dem.
They will appeal te a higher court for
redress and if they de net get it there the
people of Lancaster county will vindicate
the rights of the press when they come te
cheese Judge Patterson's successor. The
growing "lmncrieusne.ss of the judiciary
needs looking after. If editors who hap
pen te be lawyers dare net write and pub
lish what they deem te be for the public
geed, under a penalty of being disbarred,
then it is high time that presumptuous
judges be retired te private life.
An Indefensible Outrage.
Philadelphia Evening Star, Ind.
If a lawyer acting in editorial capacity
may net criticise the doings of a judge
without incurring such a penalty, it be
comes a matter of interest te knew why an
editor net a lawyer who sharply, but net
unjustly, indulges in criticisms upon judi
cial acts shall net also be punished.
It seems te be an arbitrary and most un
just proceeding. If the criticisms were ill
founded or libelous, the law provided a
remedy. But it is net claimed by Judge
Patterson that they partook of that charac
ter. He defines the offense as " misbeha
vior," and forthwith perpetrates that
which can be regarded only as an indefen
sible outrage.
The Compensation Involved.
Baltimore American, Ken.
The recent extraordinary proceedings of
Judge Patterson, who presides ever the
court at Lancaster, Pennsylvania, suggests
him as the nearest likeness te Justice Shal
low that recent days have known.
The opinion which he rendered in striking
them from the roll of attorneys is a superb
bit of tomfoolery. "If any" wrongs," he
says "are done in trials, it is net for law
yers or newspapers te criticise them ;" and
again, " from malicious and unjust at
tacks by the public press calculated te im
pair public confidence in its integrity and
honest administration of justice the court
is protected, net for the sake of the
judges presiding, but for the sake of
the public and the suitors in the
court." As Patterson admits that the
principle he lays down can only be applied
in such rare instances as that at Lancaster
where an offending editor happens also te
be an attorney of the court, he might have
spared himself the trouble of wishing that
he could deal summarily with every news
paper man who ventures tfr criticise judi
cial proceedings. Of ejmrse, he has
simply extended te the jecliters increased
liberty and occasion te point out that he
is unfit for his place en the bench, and if
that satisfies him, we can't see why they
have any reason te grumble.
Given up by Docteis.
' Is it possible that Mr. Godfrey is up and at
work, and cured by se simple a remedy?"
"1 assure you it is true that he is entirely
cured, and with nothing but Hep Kitten ; anil
only ten days age ids doctors gave him up and
said he must die !"
" Weli-a-day I That is remarkable ! I will go
this day and get some ler my peer Geerge 1
knew hops are geed." al5-2vd&w
Themas Myers, llracebridgc, writes : " Dr.
Themas' Eclectric Oil is the best medicine 1
sell. It always gives satisfaction and in ciiscs
of coughs, colds, sere threat, burns, &c, im
mediate relief has been received by these who
no it," Fer sale by H. B. Cochran, druggist,

Malaria Destroyed.
(J. A. .1. Gadbets, of Brockville, Canada, cer
tifies that he was prostrated by a malarial dis dis
c:ise contracted in Texas, and was quickly and
completely cured by the use of Warner's Safe
Pills and Sare Bitters. lie adds: UI shall never
travel in that climate without veur Sate Pills
and Bitters as a part of my outfit,"
al5-2wd&w
Briggs only swears occasionally new. It was
the rheumatism made him se profane, but since
he lias taken Dr. Themas' Kelectric Oil, he has
scarcely liad a twinge. He says he thinks
another bottle will cure him entirely. Fer sale
