FEIDAT EVENING, MAJBOH 12, 1880.
Fun en the Cars.
Twe Amateur fiddlers Atttenished by Ke
inenji. The Iowa City Republican tells the fol
lowing : " An amusing scene took place
en the train from the West en -which Re
menyi was a passenger last evening, and
was witnessed by the writer hereof. Net
far west of Iowa City a great, green,
awkward young fellow lumbered into the
smoking car bearing in his arms an ancient
and badly damaged violin case. He seated
himself just in front of a weather-beaten
individual fully as unique as himself, but
evidently some forty years elder. The
ancient person surveyed the youth with
lively curiosity and then asked what he
had "thai." "A fiddle," replied the
youth with the led nose and watery eyes.
Forthwith the old man besought him te
play a few tunes.
The youth declined, however, en the
theory that it was "agin the rules te fiddle
en the kcers." Just at this moment Con
ductor Ackley came through the car, and
the old fellow appealed te him te knew if
the young man could net be permitted te
de a little fiddling. There was a twinkle
in Ackley's eye as he lemembercd that he
had Remcnyi in the rear car, and he at
once replied with great cordiality, "Yes,
sir; the young man can play all he wants
te." "With this warm encouragement the
young man at once brought forth from the
case a wheezy old violin with an American
eagle painted in red en the back.
He began te tune up and Conductor
Ackley passed en through the train until
he came te Itumcuyi in the palace car.
lie told the great musician that there was
a remarkable violinist in the smoking car
in fact he had never heard such playing
in his life and advised Itcmcnyi te go for
ward and hear him. Forthwith Remcnyi
and one or two of his party rushed forward
te the smoking car, where they encounter
ed a remarkable scene. The passengers
had gathered around the young man with
the fiddle, and shouts of laughter greeted
the musician as he .craped through the
first bars of the "Arkansaw Traveler,"
with vaiiatiens.
The young man accepted this as a mark
of encouragement and sawed away with
lencwcd energy. Remcnyi, who was cn
tiicly unknown te the passengcis, took a
scat just act ess the aisle and joined
heartily in the general laugh. "When the
young man had finished the "Arkansaw
Traveler," the old man just behind him
took the violin, saying, "I haint played
any fur feity year. I married me a wife
and she wouldn't have it, but I iceken I
kin scrape a catgut yet." A ficsh sally of
laughter bieke feith as the old man tui
the fiddle" and began scraping en -'Jump
Jim Ciew."
It was an agonizing piece of melody,
and kept the audience in a fever e laugh
ter. When the old man finished Remcnyi
asked for the violin, and it was passed ever
te him. The train had just stepped at a
small station, and the nimble of the car
wheels was stilled into quiet. Remcnyi
draw the bow, and the grins still en the
laces of the passenger began te melt away
with marvelous rapidity. Immediately
there fell upon their astonished cars the
opening notes of a beautiful fantasia, whose
sweet witchtiy would charm the dullest.
The wheezy old violin seemed te rejoice
under the hand of its first master, and gave
feith such music as it never did before and
Diver will again. The gaping, astonished
crowd listened until Rcinenyf stepped and
then broke in with rapturous applause and
besought him te continue. Rut no he
held up the bow in gleeful derision and
exclaimed vehemently : " Can't play with
that only three hails en it no, no no !"'
lie handed the violin back te the youth,
who thrust it into the case and left the car
at once, vowing that he would ne cr play
another tune.
