    Putridity in Wells.
We had u well of beautiful water,
says the Connecticut Homestead, soft
and cool, which ail at once began to
Taste and sinell as if the dead body of
some animal were undergoing the pro
cess of decomposition in it. We gave
it a thorough examination by the aid
of a looking glass, but could discover
nothing. We descended to the water,
but found no animal or vegetable mat
ter in a putrid condition, and we were
forced to the conclusion that the water
was of itself putrid. Having reached
this conclusion, we set our wits to
work to device a remedy; we remem
bered that only stii! water became so.
We thought the reason of the contin
ued purity of the ocean must be be
cause of its continued agitation, bring
ing all its particles continually in con
tact with the atmospheric air, when it
absorbed the oxygen to the necessary
degree for reinvigoration of any prop
erty lost in sustaining in its teeming
and infinitessimal life. Upon this fact
we based our action and remedy. We
hired a man to work thoroughly the
chain pump in the well, working with
all his might two hours, during which
time he scarcely diminished the depth
of the water. It was not longer than
twenty-four hours before the water
was as sweet and good as ever. We
. believe it was the thorough agitation
of the water by pumping, extending
to the very bottom of the well, that
effected the cure.
Again, we now: have a cistern filled
with rain-water from the roof, which
passes through a filter in reaching the
cistern. A week ago the water in the
cistern became putrid, tasting and
smelling we can't tell how bad. We
remembered the experiment with the
well, and the supposed reason of its
cure; so we procured a long pole, and
thoroughly stirred it up, agitating the
water as much as possible, perhaps
working at the job fifteen minutes, j
In twenty-four hyurs the water was
sweet and wholesome again.
Poisoning by Narcotics.
The Paris correspondent of the ;
Medical and Surgical Reporter says:
Pouring cold water on the lace and J
head appears to be a good remedy in j
cases of poisoning by narcotics. A i
young woman a few days ago accident- j
ally swallowed six drachms of a mix- j
ture of laudanum ami chloroform with
some hydrocyanic acid in it. She im
mediately vomited a portion of the li
quid, and then fell down in a state ot !
coma. Prof Harley being called in,
administered hot coffee and nitric ether,
and proceeded to effect artificial respi
ration. No great improvement was
perceptible, but on the application of
cold water to the forehead, the effect
was magical. The patient began to
breathe more freely, and she lost some
blood from the nose. As soon as the
effusion ot cold water ceased the coma
returned, and was again removed by
renewing the effusion. The patient
soon moved her arms and legs, and
seemed anxious to avoid the stream of
water, as if it caused her pain. This
treatment was renewed by intervals
until the following day, and after the
lapse of sixty hours all distressing
symptoms disappeared completely.—

Mules in Central America.
One of the most striking character
istics of the mule is his aversion to the
ass, and the pride he takes in his rela
tionship to the horse ; which instincts
are met by obtrusiveness in the ass.
and by indifference in the horse. If
an ass at any time—urged by the van
ity peculiar to its race as related to
the mule—happens to fall in with a
drove of mules, he will, in all probabik
ity, be kicked and lamed by his proud
relatives. A horse, on the contrary,
takes a distinguished position in "a
drove of mules. The latter crowd
around him, and follow his movements',
exhibiting a violent jealousy, each trv
ing to stand nearest his high-bred rel
ative. This instinct is employed to
keep together the droves of mules on
a journey, or at pasture, by putting a
mare to the drove, with a'bell on her
neck, and called the bell-mare. This
animal is led day and right by a cord,
and the whole drove is thus kept un
der control, and will not 1< ave their
queen. It is therefore very difficult to
separate the drove. The man who
leads the mare is instructed, in case of
an attack from tho Indians, to leap
upon the back of the animal and take
* refuge in the wagon encampment,
whither the drove" is sure to follow
him. Even if the Indians succeed in
separating any from the drove, thev
find it difficult to carry them off. Tlie
animals incessantly attempt to turn
hack, and the travelers are thus ena
bled to overtake the robbers, and re
cover the stolen animals. The Indi
ans, in consequence, use every means
to get possession of the rrare; and if
they succeed in this, the whole drove
is lost to their owners. If several hor
ses are in a drove of mules, the danger
is that the latter become dispt rsed; and
this is the reason that, in these jour
neys, saddle-horses are not allowed to
go loose, but are led by a cord Frobel.

X given notice of any intention to with
draw this popular Loan from Sn.e at Par, and
until ten days notice is given, the undersign
ed, as " General Subscription Agent" will
continue to suppiy the public.
The whole amount of the Loan authorized
is Five Hundred Millions of Dollars. Near
ly Four Hundred Millions have already been
subscribed far, and paid into the Treasury,
mostly within the last seven months. The
large demand from abroad, and its rapidly
increasing home demand for use as the basis
for circulation by National Banking Associ
ations now organizing in all parts of the
country, will, in a very short period, absorb
the balance. Sales have lately ranged from
ten to fifteen millions weekly, frequently ex
ceeding three millions daiiv, and as it is well
known that the Secretary of the Treasury
has ample and unfailing resoutees in the Du
ties on imports and Internal Revenues, and
in the issue of the Interest bearing Legal
Tender Treasury Notes, it is almost a certain
ty that he will not find it necessary for along
time to come, to seek a market for any other
long or permanent Loans, THE INTEREST
AND FRINCII'AL OF WHICH ARE
FA YAHLE IN GOLD.
Prudence and self interest must force the
minds of those contemplating the formation
ot National Banking Associations, as well as
the minds of all who have idle money on
their hands, to the prompt conclusion that
they should lose no time in subscribing to
this most popular Loan. It will soon be be
yond their reach, and advance to a handsome
premium, as was the result with the "Seven
Thirty" Loan, when it was all sold and could
no longer be subscribed for at par.
It is a Six per Cent. Loan, the Interest and
Principal payable in Coin, thus yielding over
Nine per Cent, per annum at the present rate
of premium on coin.
The Government requires all duties on im
ports to be paid in coin ; these duties have
for a long time past amounted to over a Quar
ter of a Million of Dollars daily, a sum near
ly three times greater than that required in
the payment of the interest of all the 5-20's
and other permanent Loans. So that it is
hoped that the surplus coin in the Treasury,
at no distant day, will enable the United
States to resume specie payments upon all
liabilities.
The Loan is called 5 20 from the fact that
whilst the Bonds may run for 20 years yet
the Government has a right to pay"them off
in gold at par, at any time after 5 years.
The Interest is paid half yearly, viz: on the
first days of November and May.
Subscribers can have Coupon Bonds, which
are payable to bearer, and are SSO, JIOO,
SSOO, and $1000; or Registered Bonds of the
Bame denominations, and in addition, SSOOO
and SIO,OOO. For Banking purposes and for
investments of 1 rust*monies the Registered
Bonds are preferable.
These 5-20's cannot be taxed by States,
cities, towns or counties, and the Government
tax on them is only one and a half per cent.,
on the amount of income, when the income
of the holder exceeds Six Hundred dollars
per annum ; all other investments, such as
income from Mortgages. Railroad Stock and
Bonds, etc., must pay from 3 to 5 per cent,
tax on the income.
Banks and bankers throughout the Country
will continue to dispose of the Bonds; and all
orders by mail, or otherwise, promptly atten
ded to. v J
1 he inconvenience of a few days' delay in
the delivery of the Bonds is unavoidable, the
demand being so great; but as interest com l
mences from the day of subscription, no loss
is occasioned, and every effort is being made
to diminish the delay.
