    THE
RECIPES.
From Godey's Lady's Book for October.
Queen Cake. —Take one pound of loaf
sugar, pound and sift it; one pound of
flour, well dried; one pound of butter,
eight eggs, half a pound of currants, wash
ed and picked; grate nutmeg, thesamequan
tity of powdered cinnamon, and half the
quantity of mace. The great success of
these cukes depends upon the manner and
order in which the different ingredients
are mixed; therefore attention must he paid
to the lollowing directions: Work the but
ter to cream, then sprinkle in the sugar
by degrees. TSie whites of the eggs must
be beaten for at least half an hour, after
which mix them with the sugar and butier.
Afterwards, beat up the yolks for the
same length of time, add them to the pre
ceding ingredients, and beat all up exceed
ingly well tog- ther, adding in by degrees
the flour, spices, and currants. Bake t'neni
in tins, and dust some sugar over them.
Bread Cheesecakes. —Slice a penny roll
as thin as possible, pour over it a pint of
boiling cream, leave it to stand for two
hours, then take eight eggs, half a pound
of Imttcr, and a nutmeg grated; beat them
ali well up together, put in half a pound of
currants, well washed and dried before the
fire, and three teaspoonsful of brandy or
sherry wine. Bake them in raised crusts or
pattypans.
Sicifs Almond Pudding. —Chop up very
small two ounces of almonds and some lem
on peel; put them in a saucepan with a
pint of milk and sugar to taste; when this
begins to boil, stir in slowly a large cupful
of ground rice, and let it boil for ten min
utes, not neglecting to stir it well during
the whole time; pour it into a mould and,
when cold, turn it out. Put two ounces of
white sugar into a pan with a little water,
stir until it is melted and becomes light
brown in color, add a pint of milk, bring
this to a boil; then strain it and add the
yolks of four eggs; put the strained niiik
and eggs on the fire, and stir well until it
thickens; when this is cold, pour it around
the pudding.
Tea Calces. —One pound of fine flour,
three quarters of a pound of fresh butter, the
same of loaf-sugar, sifted finely, three-quar
ters of a poun ! of well-washed currants,
two ounces of candied lemon, and one ounce
of almonds. Hub the butter into the flour,
then add the rest, and moisten it with some
woil-beaten eggs. Make it into a paste and
roll it out. The oven must not be too hot.
Baled Almond Pudding —Beat fine in
a mortar four ounces of almonds with a few
bitter ones, and a little sherry wine. Beat
up separately the yolk> of six eggs, grate
the peel of two lemons, four ounces of but
ter, three half-pints of cream, and the juice
ol one lemon. Mix all these ingredients
well together; make a rich paste, put it at
the bottom of a dish, pour the above upon
it and bake half an hour.
Dialogue between two Democrats.
A ALLANI)I(iHAM DEMOCRAT. —I am in
favor of putting down this rebellion if it
can be done constitutionally.
i NION DEMOCRAT.—I am in favor of
putting down this rebellion, and preserving
the L nion, even if we have to annihilate
every rebel in the country, and reduce the
rebellious States to a desert like that of
Sahara.
slavery; and if the rebellion cannot be sup
pressed without doing so, I say let the slave
States go. Wo have no right under the
Constitution to interfere with slavery.
b • D.—l hold that a traitor to his Gov
ernment has forfeited all rights that he ev
er had guarantied to him while he remain
ed a loyal citizen—even his life. While I
am opposed to interfering with slavery where
it is unnecessary, yet if it becomes neces
sary, in order to crush this rebellion. I say
take away from every rebel his slaves and
send them out of the I nitcd States or use
them in any way that will help us destroy
the rebels. The rebels do not hesitate to
employ their slaves in every possible way
they can he used against us. Let
us return the compliment and use their
slaves against them.
V. D.—But lam opposed to confiscating
the property of rebels; it is unconstitutional!
U. D. Ihe d—l it is! Vour opposition
to this confiscation business, my dear Yal
landighammer, is probably the result of
| your fears lest you should suffer its conse
quences. I repeat again, that a traitor has
uo right under the constitution. In com
mitting treason lie forfeited all his rights,
and Sim decidedly in favor of confiscating
his property, and applying it to the pay
mStit of expenses of the war which his
treason"has caused.
y. D. lam opposed to suspending the
writ of Habeas C'orjms.
u. D.—So were the traitors in Now Or
leans, when Gen. Jackson suspended it and
caused their arrest.
V. D.—And I am opposed to old Abe
Lincoln and his d—d abolition crew.
I . D.-—fco is Jef. Davis and all the in
ternal traitors who are backing him.
•D. I would a thousand times rather
the South should succeed in this war than
that the country should be governed by the
Abolition Kepublican party.
f'recisely! then why don't you
remove your cowardly, treasonable carcass
to Ihe South, where it belongs ? Why do
you remaiu here among loyal people who
despise you, and who know you are a vil
lain, and only lack the courage to be an
assassin and cutthroat. Go where you be
long, you black hearted traitor. Don't stay
here, belching forth your treason and
claiming the protection of our laws. [Ex

COAL OIL GREASE.
r pRIS Grease is made from COAL OIL,
and has been found by repealed testa
to bo the most economical, and at tbo
same time the best lubricator for Mill
Gearing. Stages, Wagons, Carts, Carriages,
Vehicles of all kinds, and all heavy hearings,
keeping the axles always cool, and not requir
ing them to be looked after for weeks. It has
been tested on railroad cars, and with or.;,
soaking of the waste it lias run, with the cars,
20.000 miles ! All railroad, omnibus, livery
stable and Kxpress companies that have tried
it pronounce it the neplus ultra.
It combines the body and fluidity of tallow,
beeswax and tar, and unlike general lubrica
tors, will not run off, it being warranted to
I stand any temperature.
I have it in boxes 2] to 10 lbs. Also kegs
and barrels from 30 to 400 lbs, for general
use and sale. The boxes are more prefera
ble; they are 6 inches in diameter by 2j inches
deep, and bold 2] lbs net; the boxes are clean,
and hardly a carman, teamster, expressman,
miller or farmer, that would not purchase
one box fur trial. F. G. FRAXCISCOS.
