A.CRORAL LIGHTS.—The Auroral dis
plays during the montliof October have
been unusually brillant. For the last few
nights they assumed a peculiar appear

belt of purple light crossing the zenith
from the north-west to the south east,
varying in intensity from time to time,
but not shifting its position. At the same
time the' sky - was clear and star-lit, ex
cepting a fringe of dull leaden clouds .
hanging on the northern horizon.

PAVING ORDINANCE.- io - day's paper
will be found a new Ordina.nee passed by
the Town Council allowing pri.7nertY hold
ers to pave or macadamise the si.'reets in
front of their properties, the expeu .s e to
be re-ibtueed by deductions from asse. s s"
ments 4f taxes—the paving to be done
under the supervision and control of thp
Council. The Borough funds not ftstily-:
ing an immediate paving of the
streets this ordinance is intended to fur
ther the work, by inducing property
holders to -do it, thereby practically ad
vance the funds to the Borough for the
purpose, until repaid in taxes.
It is an important ordinance, and will
doubtless be acted on by many property
owners, especially along the line of streets
requiring repairs. But it is all important
that this paving bb done by or rind& the
direct supervision of the Council, other- I
wise there will be unseemly and expensive
patchwork. We hope the Council will
rigidly insist on this provision.
We think it would have been well to
qualify the ordinance by an additional
provision, that the paving be done in
all cases by squares, at least. If each
property owner is left to determine the
question of paving for himself, irrespec
tive of his neighbor, the streets will be
brokeu up and disfigured.. Besides the
paving in each street, or square, should be
uniform, either cobble or macadamized.
In many
. towns and cities, where the
property holders pay the entire cost, a
majority on the line of streets are allow
ed to determine the stns of paving, so as.
to secure uniformity. As the Council
here propose ultimately to pay the wet,
they should reserve and exercise the right
to prescribe the kind of pavement and
have it done uniformly by squares.

important in re spect , is the colossal

_ The new - wing three story Vogh, four
hundred feet long, trod now nearly com
pleted, in connection with the factory of
said company, affordsview of the rapid
development in the ind • department
of this large establishmen within the last
t vai
two weeks. A. result has been there achiev
ed, which, although but small, in Camper
with future discoveries in the deparent
of Sewing Machines, eclipses all present
experience here or elseware. No t \ all the
advantages and powers are as yet employ- 1
ed, which will likely be afforded 'ins this
new building, and yet the daily ausinsfac
tura of Sewing Machines is far in adv ance
of that which three years ago coulid .'
accomplished weakly. During the week
ending Angu i i twentieth—as the books \
show—two t ousand and twenty machi^es
were manufactured, and the folio eng
week, ending August twenty, seventh,
two thousand four hundred and twenty ,
nine machines were finished. ,
This is an advance of four hundred ma
chines daily and is, as we believe, the
largest manufacture of sewing machines
in a single week in this or other lands.
Our fellers , Citizens may be proud to
have such an establishment in Bridgeport.
And we hope the energy of the proprietors
may for a long time to come in an emi

prosperity of this City and the increase of
its business interests.,
Since copying the above we hare been
imformed by Jima F. Tnomes, who rep

this place, that the Company are now
building four hundred and twenty-five
machines daily.

THIS UNEQUALLED BOOK concerns the
property, business, individual rights, and
social. privileges of every one, and affords a fund
of legal knowledge that to many will make it
worth its weight in gold. The simplicity of Its
Instructions, the comprehensiveness of its subject,
the accuracy of Its details, the facilities afforded
In Its perfect arrangement, and the conciseness
and the attractiveness of its style, as well as its
cheapness, make it the most desirable of all legal
hand-books. No effort or expense has been spar
ed in adapting it thoroughly to the times, and af
fording In It the most recent and useful informa
