A CROWD.—Van Amburg Co's Me nagerie brought a large crowd ofpeople to been on Tuesday last. The exhibition was a fine one and fsilly realiied the gen eral expectation. The collection of animals was very choice, the lions, tigers and leop ards being equal, if not superior, to any we ever saw. The entire exhibition itas well managed, good order preseried, and everything passed off satisfactorily. The young folks, and some of the older 'ones, hugely enjoyed the performances of the trained dogs and mules, the capacityl of the latter to pitch overboard the best riders evoking much merriment. The Board of Trustees held a special session on Wednesday to supply thevacim- des in the Faulty occasioned by the resignation of .Prof. Conrad and the death of Prof. Stoever.. The department of Latin Language and Literature, for many years under charge of Prof. Btoever, was 'transferred to the "Franklin Professor ship." Prof. Jacobs, the incumbent of this profestorship, is a fine Latin scholar, and ailinimbily qualified for the position. The transfer is entirely satisfactory to the Faculty, and will be cordially approved by the friends of the Institution. Mr. Samuel P. Sadder, a son -of Rev. Dr. Sadtler, of Lathery'lle, Md., was unanimously elected Professor of Physi cal-Science. Ile is represented to. be a young man of much proinise in the De partment of Physical Science. He grad uated at Pennsylvania College with, the dim of 1887, and since, than has peon assidohsly prosecuting hie studiet waft' a view to making Teaching his life-work. Last fall he graduated at Harvard College, taking the highest honors in the Scientific department, receiving his degree on a Thesis which commanded special attention and subsequently appeared in Silliman's Journal. He then went to Europe, and is now further prosecuting his studies at the University of Gottingen. AA the German Universities have generally been closed in consequence of the War_with France, it is probable that Mr. Sadtler will return this fall and enter on his new. duties at Penn. sylvania College next session. In the meantime the Faculty will make full pro vision for instruction in the department of Physical Science. The re-organization of the Preparitory Department, with enlarged boarding ac commodations, and the satisfactory dispo sition of the vacant Professorships, give promise of a brighter future for Pennsyl vania College, which for years has stood in the trout rank of American Education al Institutions—less showy than some, with a higher tone than most, and survißspd by none in the thoroughness of its work. Her graduates, in scholarly attainments and general preparation for the duties of active. ht will compare favorably with the oldest and best known Colleges of New England. CAUTION Ti). - LAOIES.—We have recent ly printed several practical cautions against the use of jute switches and chig nons. So long as "fashion" endorses the chignon, we are inclined to think they wlll be worn, regardless of consequences ald despite what may be said or written on the subject. However, it may not be amiss to call the attention.of our fair read ers to what is said about the use of these monstrosites in head-gear. Here. is -a paragraph from the Portland (Maine) Press: Mr. J. P. Smith, the hair dresser, No. 100 Exchange street, showed us last eve ning one of the vermin which ho took yesterday from a jute switch, and it is one of the most repulsive looking insects that we wish to see. It is smaller than the body of a flea, but, put under an ordinary microscope, was magnified to a length of nearly three-quarters of an inch. It is of a brown color, semi-opaque, with nearly as many legs as a centipede. Projecting from the head are two horns, half as long , as the creature, curved like the horns of an ibex, corrugated like feelers of a lob ster. Attached to the rear part of the body are two pairs of claws, in two parts, the upper closing over the lower , like a parrot'ibilL Thejaws appear to be of ex traordinary power; and, altogether, the sight of such a creature causes one to in voluntarily shrink. We hear that several ladies in this vicinity have discovered these things in their switches; and we, give this , additional caution to discard this silly and unsafe style of head-dress. Mr. Smith has this specimen at his room, and those who are curious to investigate and study the structure of the animal are at liberty to do so. The Springfield (Mass.) Republican says on the aame subject: The recent revelations about 'jute - - the dark, fibrous bark, wherewith women endeavor cheaply to counterfeit the luxuri ant heads of hair denied them by nature— have been regarded, no doubt, as merely sensational, or perhaps the product of some misogynic imagination. But the doubters have no chance. The disgusting little borers that fill the fibres of the jute plant, whether used in massive chignons or long bunches, are causing a lively and by no means pleasing excitement in vari ous quarters. Finding their way to the heads of their harborers, they burrow there until the scalp is raw, and in some cases affect the whole nervous system and craze the brain. In this city several women lie in danger of death from this loathsome insect; one of these dwells on the Hill, another on Dwight street, and the disease in its lesser form is quite fre quent. Without any hair-splitting, the moral seems to be that "honesty is the best policy," in personal adornment as in business; jute chignons must take their place with the poisonous dyes and lotions of the quacks, as among the implements of fashionable suicide. Mons TNCENDIERISM.—On Sunday night last; several hay-stacks on the farm of Mr. John Spangler, in 3fountjoy town ship, were fired after mid-night, and about 13 tons of hay burned. Some malignant incendiary seems to be pursuing Mr. Spangler with unusual vindictiveness. Two barns were burnt for him on the same premises within the last six months, the last one a new barn just completed. Sev eral previous attempts had been made to fire these hay-stacks. it/rThe Republicans - of Frederick coun ty, Md., are preparing for an active cam paign this fall, and with the aid of the colored vote expect to carry the county, and elect the member of Congress for the dis+ trict of Carroll, Fiederick, Washington and' Alleghany. Judge Smith, of Westminster, will probably be the Republican nominee. The Executive Committee for Emittsburg district consists of Messrs. Joseph Hays, Samuel Maxell, Maj. 0. G. NEW ENGLAN D MUTUAL LIFE IN BIT RANCE - COMPANY OF BOSTON. -A.C- C um ulated Assets Jan, Ist 1870, $8,430,000. This Company-has a • History, being the oldest Xutuallire Insurance Company in the country, and is purely mutual. - Its Officers have ever been' men of high standing and conservative policy; twenty seven years experience has shown their management to be both honorable and succeasild. The low ratio of expenditures to re ceipts, averaging only a fraction over nine i per cent. and the slight variation in this ratio, from year to year, as shown by the reports of the Company, is a guaranty that their business is conducted systematically and with strictest economy. The stability of the Company, offering as it does abso lute security to policy-holders, as shown by the fact of its constantly ineximing ace umuhition .of surplus, is a consideration which must have weight with cautious and far seeing men. The promptness with which the Com pany has always paid its losses, leaves no uncertainty as to its ability and disposi tion to act with equal promptness in the settlement of like claims in the future. Distribution of surplus will be made annually by this company, and will be available one year from the date of the policy in the payment of the 2d annual premium and so on thereafter. All its policies are nonforfeitable, made so by stringent enactments of the'Legisla ture, of the State of Massachusetts. Among its losses for 1869, several policies were paid under the operation of the famous '‘Massatiliusetts Law." The oliiers of these pOlicies had failed to keep up their premiums, and the insurance would have been void under the laws of auy other State. Further information given and Insur ance taken by Wu.
