The brilliantevening star, the planet Ven

of the horizon about eight minutes after
seven o'clock. It is situated in the sign of

four diameters of the moon on the west,
while the planet Saturn is nineteen de

bright red star some seven degrees south
west of Saturn is the lunar star Antares.
CORRECTION.—In putting Mr. Mc-
Pherson's last letter in type, the composi
tor made him say, "while in 'Paris I visit
ed, on Sunday, the tomb of Lafayette and
the First Napoleon." The manuscript
reads "on the same day," (speaking of the
- visit to the Imperial Library,) not Sun
day. Although in Europe, Paris especial
.lly, Sunday is but little recognized,- Mr.
.'Ae.Pherson, with his American education
:asio the sanctity of the day, has, during
.his European lour, uniformly abstained
}from travel and sight-seeing on the Sab
bath. This correction is due both to our
colleague and our readers.

FIGHT WITH A BEAR.—The Cham
inersburg Valley Spirit says that Mr.
Linn, residing near Concord in that coun
ty, had'an encounter with a large bear on
.Saturday last. He saw the bear near his
residence, and, procuring a rifle, shot at
him. The bear fell and Mr. Linntsup
posed that he had killed him. On going
up lo him, however, the bear sprang to
his feet, and, as quick as a flash of light
ning, struck Mr. Linn senseless to the
ground. He jumped upon the• body, at
tacked it savagely and bit one of Mr.
Lion's arms severely. In the mean time,
other persons approached with dogs and
dispatched the bear. Had it not been for
this timely assistance, Mr. Linn would
doubtless have been torn to pieces. As
it was, he was pretty severely injured. It
is said that there are a large number of
bears on the mountains above Concord,
having left the Alleghenies to feast them
selves on chestnuts which are very plen
ty in that neighborhood.

PARKTON AND MANCHESTER
RAILROAD.—We are aural" 0 1 4' JO
notice public Imprcrvementy
the progress of railroads. The citizens of
Baltimore and Carrol counties appear to
be determined to have railway - facilities
greater than they bad in the past, since
other sections of the country have them.
On Teusday of last - week, ground was
broken, formally, by Messrs. Meitickin,
Showers, dt Co., Contractors of the above
named railroiul, which is now being sur
veyed add located by' Joseph S. GM, the
Chief Engineer of the Parkton and Man
chester Railroad. As stated heretofore,
the road starts at Parkton on the Northern
Central Railroad, in Baltimore county,
to the town of Manchester, in Carroll
County.
The occasion of breaking ground was
signalized by a procession and collation,
with music, speaking, fkc., allot village _
of Beckleysville, which is about midway
between the places above named. It is
said that a large concourse of persons of
both sexes, and of all ages and sizes, had
'assembled. Large tables - were erected
and luxuriantly spread with an abundant
collation. All partook to their satisfaction,
and thereovas an abundance lett—there
being about five hundred persons pres
ent.
After the collation, the company repair
ed to the seats near the .speakers' stand,
where a number of persons addressed the
audience, upon matters of internal Ina
provements, —of course, railroads In par
ticular.
At the conclusion of the speaking, the
intire company formed in procession and
marched a short distance to the railroad
line, and proceeded with the formal cere
mony of "breaking ground," after which
all repaired to their homes, no doubt, well
pleased-with the days proceedings..,
On Friday, however, of the same week,
the "breaking of ground" was performed
in good earnest,' at Parkton, when Mr.
Gitt, the Chief • Engineer of the road,
raised the first shovelful of earth, at the
right place, followed by others, and
then started about twenty men to work,
and now the work goes bravely on.
The completion of this enterprise will
no doubt develope an important portion
of the State, and enable farmers and oth
ers residing Were to find a convenient
and profoabliOnarke t. The road being
in connection with the Northern Central
lumber, coal, lime, ore, and other articla4
along the line' an be procured and ship
ped off, and at much less cost than they
have heretofore been able to do. The peo
ple, it is said, are alive to it as a pet pro
ject and in full hopes of its speedy com
pletion.

IMPROVED MORNING GLORY.—
The famous Morning Glory Stove, so pop
ularas a parlor and office stove, has some
times been objected to for use in cham
bers and by families needing but one fire,
because not adapted to heat water, &e.—
This difficulty has been overcome, and
last Monday we saw_one of the improved
Morning Glories in operation at ;he Ware
room of Col. C. H. Birslitarit, on Carlisle
street, which seems not only to obviate
objections but to meet every desired want.
It is nothing more cw less than the ordi
nary Moriiing Glory, with an Oven about
L 5 inches in diameter attached, and inge
niously arranged dampers by which the
heat can be thrown around the oven at
.pleasure, and making it as hot .as the
ovens of the best cooking stoves. Water
can be boiled, pies baked, and even meat
roasted as readily as in a cooking stove.
This contrivance, while preserving all the
qualities of the Morning Glory as a beat..
er, adapts it for the sick chamber, or use
in small families requiring but little
oeoking. tf
