WEST PENNSYLVANIA SYNOD.—
The West Pennsylvania Synod of the
Lutheran Church will meet in Gettysburg,
op Wednesday evening, Sept. 22. The
Synod at one time embraced the territory
of Pennsylvania west of the Susquehanna
river, and hence its distinctive name.—
Three other Synods (Central, Allegheny,
and Pittsburg,) have since been organ
ized, and the West Pennsylvania now
extends only over four counties, Adams,
York, Cumberland and Franklin. There
will probably be about forty ministers
present, with a corresponding number of
lay delegates. The Synod will hold its
meetings in St. Tames' Church on York
street, and will continue in session about,
a week.
THE A DVANCE. —This journal, which
Dr. BusurcEm. pronounces "one of the
ablest,beat, and most outspoken religious
papers now published," enters upon its
third volume this week, and celebrates the
event by several marked improvements.
It appears iu a new dress of type, begins
the regular publication of Rev. HENRY
WARD BEECHER'S Sermons, and adds
several new names to its list of contribu
tors, among theui that of Hon. HENRY
WILSON of Massachusetts, who in the
current number discusses the problem of
of Chinese imigration from the standpoint
of Christian statesmanship. The publi
cation of Beecher's Sermons in the AD
, VANCE will prove an admirable feature of
an already admirable paper, and attract
many readers.

GRAPE GROWING.—There are none
of the small fruits more luscious and
healthy, nor more easily grown, than
Grapes; and yet none more generally
neglected. Requiring but little attention,
and generally yielding plentifully, there
A is not a_garden in town or country 3vhere
Grapes should not be found. We have
often wondered that our Farmers espec
ially overlook the Grape, when choice va
rieties can be so readily and cheaply se
cured from Nurseries close at hand.—
Besides beautifying the premises, when
trained on arbors or trellises, the fruit is
a luxury , and the product profitable.
These thoughts are suggested by the ad
vertisement of Mr. ROBERT SHEADS, of
this place, in to-day's issue, who has been
giving special attention to the Grape cul
ture in his Nursery on Seminary Ridge,
and , who has for sale a large number of
vines of the very best varieties. We have
seen and eaten Mr. S.'s Grapes, and can
cordially endorse them.

Masses. 14nrroes :—I wish hereby to
inform the 'readers of the "STAR AND
SENTINEL," that two potatoe vines grew on
the farm of Joseph Cline, in this county,
one of which was eight feet five inches,
the other seven feet ten inches in length.
It is unnecessary to say that they are of
the true "Geary" species, from the fact
that if they belonged to the "Packer" tribe
they might have got . a ducking in the
"Lehigh," which would have spoiled their
growth. G. A. C.

100-We know there are many who scoff at'
laugh at, and who designate every adver
tised remedy-as "Quickery," "Humbug,"
and pronounce them worthless. Such
terms cannot be truthfully applied to the
medicinal remedies of which Dr. H. T.
Helmbold, of 594 Broadway, New York,
is proprietor. His "Fluid Extract of
Buchu," alone has stood the test of science,
and yet proved valuable. It has been
subject to the severe criticism of eminent
professors of pharmacy, and none of such
there are but will pronounce it an excel
lent article,"While many there are who
freely rceommend it as a curative agent
for all diseases of the kidneys and urinat
ing organs ; in addition to all this, It has
been a qttarter of a century in existence,
yet its sale is constantly being increased.
There are numberless concoctions called
Fluid Extract of Buchu, hence our friends,
in buying, should be careful to ask for
and get none other than Hembold's. Dr.
Helm bold's drug and warehouse, at 594
Broadway, N. Y., is one of the lions of
that gay metropolis. Such of our friends
who may be there sojourning should not
fail to visit it. We can assure them a
kindly welcome from the Doctor and all
his courteous employees.—Philadelphia

CAUTlON.—Extended success in any
department of businetts justly awakens
competition, and owing to defective men
tal and moral structure, often begets envy.
Now these are to be expected and may be
met with energy and determination ; but
not unfrequently the bounds of legitimate
rivalries are overstepped, and base, un
scrupulous men stoop to use the patron
age of others to further their nefarious
purposes. With the assistance of science.
and by means of industry and honesty,
In providing a potent remedy, Dr. Stm
ver's Old Standard Tonic Herb Bitters
have attained unparalleled celelirit", hav
ing been befoie the public for the last
thirty years.
Wherever they have entered the sick or
complaining household, their effects have
even exceeded expectation, and so far sur
passed all vice have ever claimed for them
by circular, card, or otherwise, that the
public confidence in the medical qualities
of the Bitters is unbounded. We do not
fear the. competition of the empirical
throng who attempt to_ palm off remedies
upon the people, which are not scientifi
cally compounded, and are destitute of
available qualities. Their empiricism will
be discovered in the end, and the ineffi
ciency of their preparations found out. We
would rather be envied - for merited suc
cess than despised for failure, however
ungenerous it may be for man either to
envy or despise. Against another and a
worse claw. of individuals, we are ftmeed
to take action. We allude to those who
take advantage of our popularity, and at
tempt to gain public favor and confidence
by counterfeiting JO Old Standard Bit
ters, barely imitatifig the label, or making
other approaches to its preparation calcula
ted to deceive, and as a matter of course,
in so far as they succeed, to bring our ex
cellent Tonic-into disrepute. The public
ate hereby warned against , all such im
itations: In -order to further protect
ourselves, and save the afflicted from im
position, we have.concladed to change our
Label so as ever hereafter to sustain our
indentity, and keep the reputation of the
Old Standard intact. We incur great ex
pense by so doing, but the end warrants
the means. The new label along with the
caption, directions and neat ornaments
tion, will present an excellent steel portrait
of C. H. liryder, the seuior member of
the firm. This will be the badge of its
genuineness, as well as a guarantee of the
quality of the Bitters. The label will be
duly copyrighted, and thus placed beyond
the reach of counterfeiters. By no fault
of ours shall the public confidence ever
be abused or the reputation of the "Old
Standard" be allowed to suffer. None

IMPROVED MORNING GLORY.—
The famous Morning Glory Stove, so pop
ular as a parlor and office stove, has some
times been objected to for use, in cham
bars and by families needing but ode fire,
because not adapted to beat water, sc.
This difficulty has been overcome, and
last Mondry we saw one of the improved
Morning Glories in operation at the Ware
room of Col. C. H. BUEHLER, on Carlisle
street, which seems not only to obviate
objections but to meet every desired want.
It is nothing more or less than the ordi
nary Morning Glory, with an Oven about
15 inches in diameter attached, and inge
niously arranged dampers by which the
heti/can be thrown around the oven at
plealture, and making it as hot as the
ovens of the bestcooking stoves. Water
cad be boiled, pies baked, and even meat
roasted as readily as in a cooking stove.
This contrivance, while preserving all the
qualities of the Morning Glory as a heat
er, adapteit for the sick chamber, or use
in small 'families requiring but little
cooking.

Masses. &wrong shall take it for
granted, until the contrary be shown, that
the air , climate and sail of Adams county
are as healthy as on any part, of the Globe,,
of the same extent, and that the powers of
man, bodily and intellectually, may be as
fully developed here, and reach as great per
fixtion and capacity, as in any latitude or
longitude on the whole face of the earth.—
Talk of France, Italy , Fgypt, Palestine or
Arabian sands, for health, beauty or scenery
and purity of the air! Give to any or either
of them all that is due, and after all the
purity of atmosphere, freshness and beauty
of scenery, clear Aye,. bright sun-shines,
pure streams, green Meadows and fields,
general productiveness of the soil under the
best management of skilful and intelligent
farming, and health of climate, in Adams
county, are equal to the best of them.
Invalids or hypocondriacs emigrate north
and south for the benefit of their health.—
We do not deny, bat willingly affirm, that
change of scene occasionally is' beneficial,
mentally and physically, to the healthy and
the sick. It enlarges and liberalizes the
mind, and any real and substantial improve
ment of the mind will bring with it corre
spondingly improved health and vigor of
body.
Heretofore, persons of weak lungs have
sought the South in the winter season, to
guard against the severity of Northern cli
mates, and for the benefit of the air of the
South. The advantage gained is simply
from being more in the open air, where the
temperature is mild and where there is no
confinement in citre and ill ventilated
rooms, and where the lungs receive con
stantly and unremittingly the nourishment
their nature demands of unconfined ani
on
decomposed atmosphere.
In latter times we have seen northern cli
mates in pretty high latitudes recommend
ed for the same complaint. A physician of
Mackinaw, near Lake Superior, where the
winters are long and severe, some time ago
published letters recommending that region
of country in the highest terms, for persons
disposed to consumption. The air there is
spoken of as dry .- and healthy, and the
weather not subject to sudden changes. It
is not, therefore, warmth of climate that is
necessary, otherwise that cold region would
not be the place. A climate, where the air
is pure and free from sudden changes, is cer
tainly the most healthy, and if temperate,
the most agreeable, one might suppose.--
Still, storms and changes have their advan
tages, and when the lungs are seasoned to
them they do no damage. It is only those
who inconsiderately allow themselves to be
shut up too much in hot and badly ventila
ted rooms, who are in horror all the time of
the changes of the weather.
Let the lungs have the weather as it
comes, night and day, and they will laugh
at the changes. The whole secret of health
is not well understood by most people. It
ought to be by physicians and men of
science, and tolerably so by persons of read
ing and observation. Consumption is said
to be prevalent in the United States. The
bills of mortality certainly indicate that the
complaint makes fearful ravages in portions
of the States. The climate is charged with
being the cause of the prevalence of the dis
ease. We believe the climate of the United
States is as healthy as any of the European
counties. The blame lies with the habits of
the people, and not with the climate. We
think we may safely say, without fear of
contradiction by physicians, whose practice
and observation entitle them to know the
fact best, that consumption is but little
known among persons whose employment
is chiefly in the open air; who are actively
employed through the day out of doors,
though through the night they may unwise
ly shut themselves up in tight rooma.—
Consumption is chiefly confined to cities
and towns, and to persons whose employ
ment is within doors, who give themselves
little exercise in the open air, and who sleep
in pent up rooms. it in me neighborhood
of Mackinaw they live in log houses, such
as our healthy fore-fathers of Adams coun
ty were brought up in, with large open fire
'places, where cord wood was burnt and the
room warmed by a glowing fire on the
hearth, ventilated by the. chimney, and a
free circulation of air allowed ; and if they
sleep in rooms where the chinks between
the logs allow the freak .air, and even the
snow, to blow in—that climate will be free
from consumption so long as the people live
so. In modern times, our public buildings
and private houses appear to be built and
guarded on purpose to kill people ; as if our
rungs were not made to live on fresh air—
upon pure, unadulterated, nndecomposed
atmosphere. Go into our churches, meet
ing houses and court houses, when crowd
ed, with doors and windows all tightly
closed ; and the nostrils are assailed with an
atmosphere made up of foul breaths,• with
carbonic acid from decomposition by res
piration; and If the gas lights are in full
play the air is additionally debomposed.—
Those from without enter, perhaps, from a
cold, bracing, healthy atmosphere, fresh
and elastic, to feel suddenly half stifled by
heated and conglomerate gasses, poisonous,
inanimate, and lung and life destroying. To
be seated and remain is to become flush in
the face and to incline to drowsiness. The
deadly atmosphere is not so great but you
continue to breathe and live, but a screw or
two more of the vice might bring it to the
killing point, or "plant the seeds of pre
matue death," or to sleep might be the
sleep Of death. We heard ofa lot of calves
that Were smothered to death in a railroad
car, not long since, while at Harrisburg, on
this principle,—and we have heard of the
black hole of Calcutta. The crowd pass out
of this den in a state of perspiration, the
lungs relaxed, suddenly into a temperature
as different as one's Imagination - may choose
to make it. Nothing short of bad colds
and perhaps consumption follow ; and cer
tainly the latter must eventually be the re
sult, and is the result, of changes of the
kind frequently persisted in. These changes
are a thousand times worse than sudden
changes of the weather.
' Close rooms, private and public, are
where diseases of the lungs are bred. Give
the lungs pure air, night and day, and there
is no danger of consumptiqn, and nothing
of the kind is to be feared from sudden

changes of the weather. By exposing the
lungs to the weather they become seasoned
to it, and fit to encounter any and all
changes of temperature of the weather.—
Dr. Franklin always slept with his windows

the time in cities. We go for abundant
ventilation, night and day, in public and
private houses. J. B. G.
