When &ills wet the heat ;ofthe

Whey a sail ie dry it often becomes twen
ty or words/gees wanner than the at:
mosphietrabove tt, el, sell filled with
water is cooler than the atmosphere.
When-a soil ip.too wet the plant food
which it exudates toys much diluted that a
much pea* gtuunity of fluid, mast be
taken up by the note, or it will not receive
due nourbdunent.. - The 'Vnisels of the plant
will be gorged with ack:mtabh water that, the
plant itself will be Implat low temperature,
in consequence of the increased evapora
tion from the steam and lames.
When clay soils are wet they become
adhesive, and prevent the sir from reaching
the roots of plants. When the water - is re
moved they become open and mellow, and
admit, the air freely, and more easily work
ed.
Drainagoknot only removes the water,
but makes room for the air, Which will by
the force of natural laws take its place, and
penetrate to vvery part from which the
water is drawn off.
Vegetable matter immersed in water de
composes slowly, and yields bat little food
to plants, and that not always of a whole
some character. But when their air has
free access to it, it decoiaposes rapidly, and
yields carbonic acid and other elements of
nutrition. Manures Contatning organic
Matters go much farther one dry soil than
on a wet one.
.If a sandy soil, lies upon a
wet clay subsoil the water will constantly
rise towards the surface, and the roots and
organic matter in the soil will have the ben
efit of its presence.
On some soils plants are liable to be
parched up ins drought. This is often be.
cause the toots cannot penetrate the sub
soil, which is filled with stagnant or un
wholesome water. Remove this stagnant
water by a drain, and the subsoil will be
come mellow and sweet, and the roots will
penetrate deeply into it, and thus be able to
endure a drought that dries the surface.
Sometimes it does very little gocid to
break up a bard, compact subsoil with the
plough. It soon becomes again hard and
Impenetrable. But if the soil is dniined
below this hard pan the rains penetrate
through It and soften it, and remove any
noxious properties It may contain, and a
deep root bed is made for the plants, yb
which they will, be sustained even In very
dry seasons. It Is where bard subsoils Ile
near the surface that crops suffer most from
droughts.
Thus dialnage warms, and, deepens,: 'and
sweetens the toll, and renders it more pro
ductive, and enables the growing crops the
better to endure the effects of a wet or a
dry season. The roots of corn and some
other crops penetrate a mellow soil from
three to four feet deep. Draining, then, to
be effectutd, should take cattle water to a
depth somewhat below that to which the
roots penetrate. This ShOttld 111 War be
done where the fall 113 sufficient to allow` it.
STO3IIOO 07 2130 Hons.—The London
"Bosse-Book" eves this useful information
ooncenslpg the, stomach of the 'horse, and
the pandit/oats under with% bait cap;
ifissinmedi is small in proportion to his
size; he la couneopenil yunable to take much
food at a time. He requires to be more of
ten fed ; tenth's means he is almost always
enabled to be at his master's service.
To explain our present subject, It will be
sufficient to say that the front of the horse's
chest contains his lungs, by which he
breathes. Behind them, separated only by
a thin kind of skin, is the stomach, destined
to receive And digest the food. Each of
these organs become larger when in use;
the lungs occupying more room when the
animal is moving about, and breathing more
quickly. The space they occupy is then so
filled, that only one of them can be distend
ed at a time. The Pope eau swell out his
lungs, and breathe hard, trot or gallop fast,
provided his stomach be empty ; he can fill
it with safety when at rest, or nearly so, till
the food is digetted. But if they are both
full, the greatest danger is to be apprehend
ed; the horse ,is sure to be "blown" almost
immediately, becapse he has no room to
breathes and apoplexy may cause . the ani
mal to drop dead in a mlnute.
We have mentioned that the horse's stom
ach is small compaired with his size ; and
from this we may learn that he is not able
to cat much at p. time without injury to him
self. He is apt to do this sometimes, dtpec-
Lally when he has been kept long at work
without being supplied with food. When
brought home his small stomach Is crartt
mefl full before any part of It Is turned into
healthy nourishment 1,03 recruit Ills ezhawn
ed frame; he continues eating on, and dis
eases called the staggers, megrimes or ap
poplezy, are the dangerous and generally
fatal result.
We spay take a hint from this, and see
that no hOrse is allowed to get ap unlimited
supply of food. A proper quantity should
be given, and no more—pnough to satisfy
his requirements, and then to allow proper
time for him to digest. Many a, horse has
been killed from a lit 'brought on by the
porn-bin having been left open at night,
401 giving him an opportunity to gorge
himself to death with the tempting food.
A &Ara Housx.—A correspondent of an
Eastern paper describes a novel house
cently.built at Brownsville, Maine :
"This house is not only shingled, but
clapboarded with slate. It la a elateedifie e ,

are put on to the boarding of the walls with

of segments of a circle overlapping esph

the natural colour of the elate is pleasing

were, the-slats would furnish it, foi when

front Steps are of beautiful slabs of slate ;
the sinks, mantles, shelves error plate; the

which makes a handsome finish. In short,
this is a real State-orltaine house, and

Tons WONDERFUL .REMEDY" was discovered
and introduced shoot twenty years ago by Dr. E.
Cheap/ma v en eminent Egyptian physician.
lie had long seen and felt the want °fame remedy
which would strike at the root of disease, and so
.prevent much of the suffering which the human fami
ly was then compelled to endure.
nil great question was presented-to his mind
ayery day in vivid colors as k e moved among the sick
aiddying, and observed the inefflcldney of nearly all
the remedies then in use. Thils he was led ter.thitdc
and experiment; and after ten years' study and Labor,
be presented t• his fellow-man the wonderful Zinger!
Bitters. The effect of this preparation in the pre
vention find curs of disease was so marvellous and
astonishing, that the most Clattering marks of royal
favor were bestowed upon him who discovered it.—
Ms name was placed upon the Roll of Nobles, and
a gold medal with. the following-Inscription—Dr. 11.
ITheoperna, the Pub lic Benefactor—was presented to
him try the Viceroy.
The prepai'atlon has been used In severalepldemics
of cholera, both u d pre.* entlie and curative mess
ure,and with such great success, that it has been it
troduced Into nearly all the general hospitals of the
old world.
Tips old saying that on ounce of prevention is worth
a pound of cure, applies with marvellous force to
cholera, and therefore any remedy that will protect
no against this terrible disease should be freely and
persittently used.
All pathologists now agree that the cholera poison
acts on the system through the blood. and that any
combination which Acts on the excretory organs, and
keeps them In working order, mast prevent a sufficient
accumulation of the poison to exert its terrible effects
on the organism. This Is true not only of cholera, but
of nearly all other maladies, especially the different
forms of fever.
The Vogul Bitters is Just such a comedy as the
above conditions require. It acts on the organs of
excretion and secretion. keeping np_s perfect bal
ance between them. This Bitters is composed en
tirely of roots and barbs, so nicely concocted . that
every organ is actod upon and put in tone. It. taste
le plcasant and its effects prompt andlasting.
Numerous canes of the following diseases have
been cured by it: Chofera, Diarrticea, Dysentery,
i3erofola, Typhoid, and Typhus Fever. Fever Ague,.
Nervous Debility, Anaemia. Female Irregularities,
Dyspepsia, Flatulency, Colic, ka.

afro offer it to the farmer this season. It is well
known, having taken the premium at the Benders.
ville Fair, also at the Gettysbiarg Mowing Match over
seven others, which were considered splendid ma

fi,ring concluded not to offer any machine that will
not give entire satisfaction, I here refused agencies
of several other machines, and now offer this one as
THE GREAT MACHINE 0, THE SEASON.
Haying tried one myself, I know exactly what it will
do. I could refer you to scores of farmers who hare
purchased machines of me, who are highly pleased and
say this is the only machine they would use.
Extras always on hand, and repairing done here at
my plate. This is a great consideration—the machine
can be repaired at home immediately, and with much
lees cost.
Another great saving . Is the BINDER which is at
tached to this celebrated Her and Mower. It has
been thoroughly tried, and give n entire satisfaction—
requiring no harvest him except a driver. This
Binder can also be attached to the Reapers which
have been sold; but cannot be attached to any citbea
