Icicitoral Deximmt. WEDNESDAY MORNING Aug. 11, '69, The Care of Harness. Perhaps nothing on a farm better repays the care bestowed on it than harness; few things go so quickly to to the bad from neglect. Now if the bare consideration of economy (for the article in question is costly,) we add a little for appear ance-sake in nicely kept h arness, some thing for the comfort of animals work ing in well-fitting,flexible leather, and what value you please for the safety to life and limb of the owner and beast, we need not apologize for asking at tention to this subject as important. Harness ought to be washed about once a month with a sponge and Cas tilesoap- one strap at a time— and the soap removed by a clear-water sponge as soon as the surface is cleansed. - Twice a year it should be oiled, or oftener if much used and frequently wet-and dry. Unlesi you can obtain perfectly pure neat's foot oil, (such as Peter Cooper's,) make it yourself. Take the feet of a beef, crush the bones well with a sledge or axe, and boil them in a large pot of water for 12 hours. Make two quarts of tallow from freid beef or mutton suet, and pour it into a four‘quart• can (which should have a lid to keep out mice) and place it on the stove. Add a lump of pure yellow wax as large as a hen's egg, stirring as it melts. Then fill up the can with neat's foot oil, and, removing it from the fire, continue to stir until the intermixture is thor oughly complete. This, when cold, will be of about the same consistence as hog's lard. Keep in the can a bit of sponge always ready for use. It ought to be damp when it first goes into the grease, as it will remain more flexible always afterwards than if greased when dry. Leather which has become dry and horny thro' long neglect, will receive no benefit from grease applied to it in its dry and hard condition. You must not only have grease of the right sort, but must know how to use it. First, then, take the harness apart wherev er it can be unbuckled. If hard, soak it in clear water (not warmer than milk freshly drawn) for several hours, Then wash the pieces as directed with Castile soap, and work them in the hands until they are soft and pliant ; and if in very bad condition, this will require care and patience. Hang in a room where they will not dry too rap idly. When about half dry, apply the grease liberally on both sides, and again hang up, for at least one day if possible. A white crust like stearine will be left on the surface when the leather is dry, which can be removed with a dry coarse cloth. For common work har ness nothing more will be needed, but carriage harness may be again washed with a sponge, and wiped with a dry chamois skin. Boots and shoes, of cow hide, kip or calf skin, ought to be treated in the same way several times a year. If the surface is washed with Castile soap, they will take a superior polish after the second brushing. Try the com fort of such boots, and I shall then be able to appeal to your understand ings, 0 farmers, as well as your inter est, when I urge you not to declare "The Care of Harness."— Country Gentlemen. The Farmer's Shop. Every farmer should have a shop fit ted up with such tools as are used by the carpenter, joiner, machinist and blacksmith, or with those that would be valuable in making repairs. Above all, we consider a good foot lathe very desirable. It wo'd be impossible with in the limits of a newspaper article to merely notice the advantages of this machine and its varied uses. A very good foot lathe costs from sixty to one hundred dollars, and the money is well expended in the purchase. Articles of use and ornament made of wood, ivory, and metal may be turned out by the foot lathe convenient for use in the house or on the farm. The practice on the lathe is one of the most facin ating pastimes for a stormy day or an unemployed evening. Apart from its use in making and repairing the foot lathe is a pleasant companion for the business haunted and brain weary.— One who adopts it as a companion of his leisure hours will soon become an adept, and the more he uses and be comes acquainted with his wahine, the better he will like it. He will be surprised at the number and elegance of the little articles of use and orna ment he can produce from the rough material, and at the pleasure that the practice of a mechanical art can afford. —Scientiffc American. RECIPE WORTH ONE THOUSAND Domans.— The Ohio Cultivator says the following recipe is worth one thous and dollars to every housekeeper: "Take one pound of sal soda and half a pound of unslackened lime and put them in a gallon of water, boil twen ty minutes, let it stand till cool, then drain off and put in a small jug or jar; soak your dirty clothes over night, or until they are wet tbrough, then wring them, and rub on plenty of soap, and with water add one teacupful of the washing, fluid ; boil half an hour or more, rinse, and your clothes will look better t: - ..an by the old way of washing twice before boiling. That is an in , - valuable recipe, and every poor, tired woman should try it." IF the roots of trees are dipped into water just before planting, the earth that sticks to them will give immedi ate support to the smaller fibres, MISCELLANEOUS.
