of the First National Bank, has erected
a beautiful brick house on Linn street.
It is neatly lined and penciled. We un

hiding the beautiful brick color 'with
paint of any kind.
A. S. VALENTINE —The new brick

is going to be. when finished. a superb

far the best private dwelling la our
thriving young city. Mr. Valentine
one of our best. and most enterprising
citizens and is not one of the men who
closes hi.. purse to, and withholds hi;
sympathies from the poor or those who

He deserves a palace. May he long live
to enjoy it.
Ma's &nom. Horse.—Thu exhibition
at Hoy's school house, on Friday even
ing last. we are info-mod. was vsrlt at
tended. No mind+ tone° fee was required.
This very liberal mode of entertaining
an audience for an evening. should cer
thinly be appreciated by those who at
tend,d, and were benefitted and instruct
ed thereby. The performance was re
markably good, the performers playing
their parts well, with great credit to
themselves, and to the satisfaction of the
audience.
GAY.—The other day we took a view
of the new dwelling house lately erect
ed by E. M. Blanehatd, Esq., on Linn
st., and pronounce it a gem of the first
class, which adds greatly to the beauty
of that street. Mr. Blanchard has
shown good taste in discarding the "half
mourning" colors, so prevalent with our
citizens, and adopting a rich, light buff
color for the outside of his domicile,
making it present a bright and cheerful
arpearance. The painting was done by
Mr. Dunham, who, sea decorative artist,
has few superiors, if any, in his line of
business. Persons employing him, will
find him skillful and prompt. in filling all
of his engagements according to agree
ment, and on reasonable terms.
Oun CITY.—Yes we sometimes write
City Why not? Bellefonte is, or ought
to be a city, We have the water power,

PLHASANT GAP.—We are pleased tn
learn that. the exhibition, on last Satur
day evening,• in the M. E. Church. at
ple a sant Gap, was a' grand success. The
church was crowded to overflowing. The
seats were all occupied. The aisles were
full of persons who were compelled to
stand. From the large concourse of
people in attendance, they must have
realized a handsome acute of money. It
is due to the perfcirmers, both male and
female, to say that they performed ex
tremely well. and to the entire satisfac
tion of the' audience. The "colored"
portion of the performance was splendid,
eliciting rounds of annlau , e from all pres

To haul front Im-hels of corn fifty mile- ,
on a wagon, costs. toys the Agrten
at least twelve dollars for a team, driver
and expenses.. A railload would trans
port it for fora• dollars at most. Allow
ing an average of forty hust.el per acre,
the crop would he wort eight dollars
per acre or eight per cent on $lOO. As
the relative a•tvantnge is about the same
for other crops it is clear that. a railroad
passing through a town would add $lOO
per acre to the value of 'he farm. A
town ten miles sqare contains sixty-four
thou , and acres. An increase of $lOO
per acre is equal to $6,400 008 or enough
to build two hundred miles of railroad,
even if it costs $l2 000 per mile. But
two hundred miles of road would extend
through twenty towns ten miles square,
and cost but ten dollars per acre if taxed
upon the laud. These figures are given
merely as an illustration. If the farm
ers hod taxed themselves to build all the
railroads in this counir,y, and given them
away to any.companies that would stock
and ran them, the present increased val
ue of their land would have well repaid
all tit,: outlay.—
