I have O'e liouor to re)ort that my mountoil
force, foar thousmd strong, in conjunction
with Ctwral GiUcn'a Brigade, tho whole
under command of Mujor-Gencral George
hitoneiruui, marclicd from Ilean's Slation on
Uie llitii ol DcccmVjr nt daylight.
They met Duke's lirlgada al Kingsport,
where Uc was draw n up to oprose the cross
Ing oflhe Holt-ton river. I sent two regiments
to support (enera' (iillem, who flanked the
enemy, routing him, and killed, wounded, and
captured one hundred men and a wagon train
and pursued to liritlol. lie attacked thai
place at ii o loci in the morning, capturlpg
the town, with two hundred and fifty prison'
tri, two trains of cars, five engines, and luv
mence quantities -f utore.n.
I learned that Vaughn was at ZollickofJi-r,
twelve tnilcs below, and marched to attack
him, but he glinted away In a dense log, and
made for the salt works.
I discovered his flight In time to head him
off at Abington, which place I captured on
the night of December 11, taking one gurj, a
large amount of stores, and an engine with
some rolling stock.
General Gllluni continued tbo pursuit of
"Vaughn, coming up with him at Marion,
driving him from a strong position, and cap
turing fifty prisoners.
I scut Colonel Brown's Brigide to the sup
port of General Gillem, who again came
"Upon the enemy at Mount Airy, and drove
bim In confusion, capturing some prisoners
and seven pieces of cannon, and a largo
-wagon train.
Colonel Brown, with his brigade, later In
the day, charged the Itcbcl home guard of
TVytheville, capturing five pieces of cannon
and eight caissons.
Major llairison, of the 12th Kentucky, who
lad been detached, by order of General Stone
man, with three hundred picked men and
horses, struck the Virginia Railroad on tie,)
l!th of December, near Glade's Spring, cut
ting It and capturing two trains of cars. lie
then got In Vaughn' front, and continued
along the line of the road, destroying all the
bridges and depots as far as Wythevllle, a
large amount of rolling sto k, and tin great
lrou works near Marlon.
Colonel Brown destroyed tbo bridges for
Uin miles above Wythevllle, when the expe
dition Marled on its return, the men aud
horses beiug entirely worn out.
Near Marion I carne upon Breckinridge,
who was following Colonel Hi own, and an en
gagement of lliirl y-aix hourt ensued, at the
cljso ol which Breckinridge retreated towards
Saltvillc, but f'olonel Buckley, with a brigade,
baving got In his rear, lorced him in confu
sion towards North Carolina,
Colonel Buckley ilTectually destroyed tht
lead mines near Wytheville on tho night of
the 20th.
After some re.ictance our united forces csp-
turcd and destroyed the salt works, with eight
pieces of cannon.
The expedition has been entirely successful,
aud the damage will bn more felt by the
enemy than UkpIoss of Blehrnond.
The salt works and lead mines are In rulni,
and cannot be repaired during the war. My
forces are now at this place and safe. I will
end you a detailed report by mail.

that was lost so aatnrally at Atlanta, and found
so singularly in Philadelphia, as stated in Tun
Tm.iuuai'H a few days since, has been formally
disposed of by Alderman Welding. Thoro was
no further evidence developed. Tho man who
sold the horn in this city culd not be found. He
left for Baltimore after securing his eighty dol

Wilding ruled that there was no evidence to
prove that the horn had been stolen. It was the
ptoperty of a corporation in an unfriendly city,
captured by the L'nltod States troops, and as all
corHjrations belong to tbo State in which they
ate legalized, tho born was the property of the
United Statea Government, who came into pos
