Peace.
After an exciting and bitter de
bate, the U. S. Senate finally passed
the Electoral "Hill, on Thursday
morning the 23th, by tie© decisive
vote of 47 yeas to 17 nays. 20 Pe- 1
mocrats and 21 Republicans voted
for the bill, and 16 Republicans and
1 Democrat —taton of Connecticut
—against it. The bill was sent to
the House immediately where it ,
passed on Saturday by a vote of 191
ayes to SO naves. 139 Democrats
and 32 Republicans voted aye. and
18 Democrats and OS Republicans
voted nay on final passage. It will
be seen that the Democrats largely
favored the bill, while a large ma
jority of the Republicans opposed it. '
The President signed the bill j
aud it is now the law of
the land. Tiie bill provides the ap- '
poiutment of a tribunal to be com
posed of five Judges of the Supreme
Court, live Senators and five mem- !
bers of Congress. All points of dif- j
Terence upon which the House and
Senate can not agree will be sub
mitted to this tribunal, whose ac
tion in the case will be conclusive
unless nullified by the concurrent ac- j
tion of the two Houses of Congress.
Both political parties are rep
resented on this tribunal as nearly
equal as possible.
The gentlemen likely to constitute
the commission will be as follows :
SUPREME COURT JUIKVES.
Nathan Clifford, of Maine.
Bamuel F. Miller, of lowa.
Stephen J. Field, of California.
William Strong, of Pennsylvania.
Joseph P. Bradley, of New Jersey. I
SENATORS.
George F. Edmunds, of Vermont.
F. T. Frelinghuyaen, New Jersey.

George F Hoar, of Massachusetts.
J. A. Garfield, of Ohio.

The House and Senate will have
a joict meeting to-morrow to count j
the vote, when it will soon bo known j
what points of difference the com- j
mission will have to deteimine. 1
"What the result will bo it is irnpossi- j
ble to foretell. For ourself, we '
firmly believe that Tildea and llend- j
rieka were fairly elected, and that i
they will finally be HO declared.

Judge David Davis, of the U.

change is for the better by great
odds.

We ei joyed the delicious luxury ,
of a sleigh ride—to Bellejonte and !
back—on a certain day last week.
Started early in the morning, in j
company with that prince of goou <
fellows, Dr. P. T. Musser, of whom j
so:ne of our readers may have heard, j
A fresh, bracing air, good company, I
a span of spirited hors-s, what more
could we ask to be utterly happy !
We literally flew through Penn Hall.
Spring Mills, Centre llall, several
other Villes and Halls, and arrived
in Bellefonte in the incredibly short
time of well we dislike to state
precisely, lest an unchristian world
might doubt our editorial veracity.
Suffice it to say that we m !e Belle
fonte 44 *n less than no time."
Strange as it may seem it is never
theless true that the feeling of
is contageous. Sitting beside a gen
tleman of culture and wealth—sped
over the surface of the earth by a
pair of magnificent bays, in a gorge
ous sleigh, at a rate compared to
which rail road speed is mere mocke
ry, how conld a poor editor help for
once to feel rich ? And we did. We
bad a mixed feeling of pity and con
tempt for our poor fellow mortals
whom we met and passed on the
road, tugging along as best they
could.
In Bellefonto we stopped at our
oil head quarters, the Brokerhoff
House ; visited that model printing
establishment, the Watchman office;
shook hands with half a dozen law
yers and inore doctors ; paid our re
spects to the efficient commander of
Fort Muuson ; dropped into the
Court House to see that justice was
done there ; collected some bills ;
got some advertising and a few subs,
and went home rejoicing.
It was altogether a grand sleigh
r!<> and a pleasant trip,

SERIOUS FUN. Last Monday
night a rather serious affair occurred
at. Reims Creek, near Ertei's Mill.
Mr Jacob B. Kern, who resides just
over the bridge at Stover's distillery
had for some time lived in a state of
separation from his wife. Last week
Mr. Kern's mother, an aged woman,
detained this life. This set of Prov
; ideuce Bem* to have been the occa
! sion of a re-union between Mr. and
Mrs. Kern, who have lived together
since the old lady's death. On Mon
day night a number of young men
in tha neighborhood undertook to
celebrate this re-union by ca'oxhump
ion music and a general fuss. K"i*it
did not relish this procedure and
gave them a reception which they
hardly expected. He fired a musket
heavily loaded with shot or small
bits of lead into the crowd, wound
ing no less than seven, namely, P.
11. Stover, forehead ; Henry Stover,
hack of tl> neck ; .Tames Kerstefcter,
