Amnesty International.
Amnesty
International is an
independent, impartial
movement, which plays
a specific role in the
worldwide protection
of human rights. It
is based on the
Universal Declaration
of Human Rights,
adopted by the United
Nations in 1948.
Amnesty began in 1961
when a British lawyer
read about two
Portuguese students
who were sentenced to
seven years'
imprisonment for
raising their glasses
in a toast to freedom.
The lawyer then
organized a letter
writing campaign to
convince the
government of this
injustice. And so it
began.
Amnesty focuses on
prisoners who are
being treated unfairly
either by torture or
denial of fair trials.
College groups take
part in letter writing
campaigns, help make
the public aware of
amnesty, and hold
special events to
impress the importance
of these so-often
denied rights.
I am interested in
starting an Amnesty
International group at
Penn State Hazleton,
but I need support. I
transferred here from
the McKeesport Campus
where I was involved
PRES SAYS
in an amnesty group.
Its very satisfying
and rewarding to know
that you can make a
difference. If you
are interested, please
call Tara at 450-3292.
There will be signs
posted as to when and
where the first
meeting will be held.
Hope to hear from you
soon. - Tara Graham

The Residence Hall
Council’s first event
was a booksale run for
and by the students.
This sale was intended
to let students sell
their books at prices
set by themselves
along with allowing
students to buy books
at far less prices
than the Bookstore.
The sale was
profitable and many of
the students were
satisfied with books
sold and books bought.
Perhaps the R.H.C.
booksale typifies the
purpose of the
Residence Hall
Council. We are here
to make life a little
bit easier and a
little more pleasant
for the Penn state
Hazleton students. We
are affiliated with
the Residence Halls
and have regularly
scheduled meetings
with the Director of
Food and Housing
Services in order to
openly air grievances
by Residence Hall
students, and relay
messages to them from
Admi nist ration.
R.H.C. holds many
events throughout th<
year. Last semester’:
events included the
Dating Game, Hall
Decorating Contest,
Halloween Movie Nigh
Tree Decorating
Festival. Upcoming
events include; Win,
Lose, or Draw, Bingo
Weekend, The Roommat<
Game, Valentine's Da;
Dance, and the Super
Sloppy Double Dare.
The Officers and
members of R.H.C.
cordially invite all
resident and non-
resident students to
come to our meetings
held weekly in the
R.H.C. room located
South Hall basement.
Please help us out,
we can help you.
