Boscovs accommodates Penn State students Jeanne Sacco Contestants sought for Miss Pocono Pageant Applications for the 1983 Miss Pocono Scholarship Pageant, an official preliminary of the Miss America Pageant for Carbon, Columbia, Luzerne, Monroe, and Schuylkill Counties are now available. George Yanoshik, Jr'., an Ex ecutive Editor of tie Collegian is serving his second year as Publicity and Public Relations Chairman of the pageant. Ap plications and further details con cerning the pageant are available through George at any time, or during scheduled Collegian hours on Mondays; Wednesdays, and Fridays. The entry deadline is June 1, 1982. The pageant itself will take place at Gus Genetti's Best Western Motor Lodge, Hazleton, on September 18,1982. The 1982 pageant, conducted Highacres / Harry Photo by Jerry Trently last September, awarded its win ner Sophomore Kelly Yale over $lOOO in scholarship and gift prizes. The current Miss Penn sylvania Scholarship package is worth over $30,000. The Miss America Pageant and its preliminaries emphasize talent and scholarships unlike the Miss Pennsylvania, U.S.A., and Universe Pageant counterparts which are strictly pageants where physical beauty, not talent or education, is emphasized. The Miss Pocono Pageant, a Hazleton Chamber of Commerce approved project is co-sponsored by the Panther Valley ChaMber of Commerce and the Pocono Mountains Vacation Bureau. It is to be emphasized that there are no entry fees for any contes tant participating in the pageant. By George P. Not only does the store otter employment opportunitiei to the college student, but organizations and clubs on campus can also share in what is available. Currently from Highacres Nan cy Braskey, sophomore; Virginia Holzman, continuing education student; and Stacey Webber are members of the "Teen Fashion Board" in the store. This is a select panel of 15 students from the high schools in the Greater Hazleton area and Penn State. Current fashion trends, personal grooming, cosmetics, and model ing are among the many ac tivities these young women par ticipate in as a part of the board. Emerich "Working for security teaches 'you how to communicate with many different people," said Joe Carter,sophomore. "The job provides freedom, freedom meaning that many responsibilities are in the hands of the student patrol. The student patrol frequently makes their own decisions on some situations without always getting okayed from the top. Jobs that encourage responsibility and personal decision making prepare the student for the outside world. The security job does this and I'm glad I work for the department."joe works Monday and Thursday nights and is majoring in accounting. Graduate Ms. Jeanne Sacco, Public Relations Director at Boscov's. "I hope to get many more students interested in all that Boscov's has to offer in the future." The Highacres Chorus provided the store with strolling minstrels and it staged a concert earlier in December for the Christmas holidays. Events in the store-in which students can become involved in clude: "The College of Knowledge," Boscov's "Pre- Federation Day" project; and a Cancer Telethon. Between January 18 and February 20, the store con ducted its "College of Knowledge." The "Pre-Federation Day" pro ject which will take place on March 13 can involve any club or organization on campus in terested in helping raise money for a( service organization. This year !Domestic Violence is the issue ,being addressed; and, the Women's Aid Center in Hazleton will benefit from the project. On March 27, a Cancer Telethon will take place in Boscov's Auditorium. This program will not only help raise funds for Cancer research, but it will serve as stage featuring local talent. The event, a part of a two-day program, will be televised in Boscov's on Saturday, then at Gus Genetti's on the following day. "Any student or groups in terested in being a part of any of the activities we have planned should get in touch with me in my office or by phoning 455-9561," said Ms. Sacco. Also as a courtesy to the Hazleton Campus, Boscov's plans to support and promote the an nual Arts Festival during the Spring Term by providing -a park ing area which will relieve some of the traffic congestion on cam pus during the this event. Coincidentally Store Manager Ken Brennan and Assistant Manager Joe Guizdowski are also Penn State Graduates, therefore, along with Ms. Sacco, there is a special interest in bringing recognition and awareness to the store's neighbor Penn State University, The Hazleton Cam pus.
