Penn State Football Notes
In Penn State’s only previous
appearance at Giants Stadium in
East Rutherford, N.J., the Lions
whipped Rutgers, 45-7, in the
opening game of the 1977 season.
Senior fullback Matt Suhey is
Penn State’s fourth-leading
career rusher. In four seasons, he
has gained 2,294 yards on 526
carries. The Lions’ leading
career rushers are Lydeli
Mitchell (2,934 yards,) John
Cappelletti (2,639) and Lenny
Moore (2,380).
Joe Patemo is the winningest
active coach with a minimum of
10 years as a Division I-A head
coach. His 14-year record is 125
victories, 27 losses and a tie (82.0
winning percentage). That mark
includes a 65-9 record (87.8
winning percentage) at home, 54-
14 (79.4) on the road and 6-4-1
(59.1) in bowl games.
Joe Paterno’s 63-6 record
against Eastern opponents
includes an 8-1 mark against
Army. Patemo’s teams won five
of six games against Army teams
under coach Tom Cahill and won
all three contests against Homer
Smith’s Cadet teams.

Split end Tom Donovan has
moved into 10th place on Penn
State’s career pass receiving
yardage chart and 11th place on
the career receptions chart.
Donovan has 746 yards in 45
receptions in his four-year
career. Donovan passed Gary
Hayman (1972-73, 730 yards) to
move into 10th place on the
yardage list. Ahead of Donovan

the career receptions chart with

Penn State is seeking to extend
its National Collegiate Athletic
Association record for
consecutive non-losing seasons.
The Lions have had 40 straight
non-losing campaigns since the
last losing year in 1938, when the
record was 3-4-1.
Matt Suhey became only the
ninth player in Penn State his
tory to gain 200 yards rushing
in a game, when he picked up
225 yards on 23 carries
against Army. The 225-yard total
was the fourth-best single-game
performance in Penn State his
tory. Suhey has gained 100 or
more yards in four different
games in his four-year career.
In the last 25 seasons, Penn
State has been shut out only six
times. The Nittany Lions have
scored in 136 consecutive regular
season games, The last team to
stop Penn State was Georgia
Tech in the next-to-last game of
the 1966 season, 21-0. The Lions
have scored in 76 consecutive
games since a 14-0 loss to
Oklahoma in the 1972 Sugar Bowl.
Penn State football coach Joe
Paterno has a 14-year record of 64
victories and six losses (91.4
winning percentage) against
Eastern independents. Patemo’s
teams have won 12 consecutive
games against Eastern
opponents since a 24-7 loss to
Pittsburgh at Three Rivers
Stadium in 1976.
Penn State punters have not
had a kick blocked in 10 years.
The last team to block a Penn
State punt was Navy on the first
punt of the first game of the 1969
season. The Lions have not had a
punt blocked in the last 601 punts.
Freshmen
Eight freshmen comprise this
year’s men’s basketball squad.
Pete O’Donnell, s’H’’, was a
starting guard at Bishop Hafey
for two years. O’Donnell has a
good outside shot, and is a good
penetrating guard. Ron Cann,
6’2”, a starting forward out of
Maria Catholic High, averaged 16
ppg. in his senior year. Frank
Ancharski, 6’2”, is a forward
center out of West Hazleton High.
A 1 Kurshinskie, 6’6”, a starting
center out of Lourdes Regional
High, will be used in the pivot
position this year. Krushinskie
possesses good rebounding
capabilities. Bob Stoffa, 6’4”, a
starting forward out of Sayre
High, received all conference
first team honors. Stoffa was
Sayre’s leading scorer and
rebounder as a junior and senior.
Dan Wolfberg, 5’10”, a guard out
of Selinsgrove High School, pos
sesses fine passing skills. Brian
Brassington, 6*7”, a center out of
J. W. Robinson High in Fairfax
Virginia, possesses a good out
side shot for a big man. Brassing
ton is strong enough to control the
boards on defense. Bob Kennedy,
6’, a guard out of Shikellamy
High, has the ability to see and
pass to the open man. Bob is an

Condors Display Green and Gold
The Hazleton Campus
Basketball team displays green
and gold as the team colors.
Approximately eight years ago
the Commonwealth Campus
athletic representatives met to
discuss adopting independent
campus team colors and
mascots. These new team colors
and mascots did not replace the
traditional Penn State colors of
blue and white, nor the Nittany
Lion, but were only considered as
a means of gaining identity for
the individual campuses. With
this thought in mind,
approximately four years ago the

excellent ball handler.
This year’s schedule is once
again very competitive as
Hazleton will play the top Jun
ior Colleges and Commonwealth
Campuses in the state. Key
games appear to be against Key
Stone Junior College and Luzerne
County Community College in
non-league play. In the C.C.A.C.,
the perennial powerhouse—
Ogontz Campus erf Philadelphia
appears to be the team to beat.
Last season Hazleton finished
third in the C.C.A.C. Only the top
two teams in each division make
the playoffs, and this year it
appears Hazleton will have a
good shot at accomplishing the
task. The last Penn State
Hazleton Campus team to qualify
for the playoffs was the 1948-49
team which finished with a
record of 17-2 and went on to
capture the state title.

student body and faculty of
Hazleton were asked to consider
several alternatives to the colors
blue and white and the mascot,
the Nittany Lion. The results of a
vote by students and faculty
indicated a majority in favor of
the colors green and gold and the
nickname Condors.
Due to the fact that the
choosing of individual campus
colors and mascots was
experimental in nature, only one
varsity team on each campus
was chosen to display the new
colors and mascot. On the
Hazleton Campus, the basketball
team was selected to undergo this
experiment.
In conclusion, P.S.U. will still
be represented by the colors blue
and white and the Nittany Lion
mascot. The colors green and
gold will help to distinguish the
Hazleton Campus from other
Commonwealth Campuses
during athletic competition. The
several other campuses that have
adopted individual campus colors
in addition to the traditional blue
and white are: Schuylkill, black
and gold; Altoona, black and
silver; and Ogontz, gold and
white.
During the winter term, the
Physical Education department
will again offer skiing as a
Physical Education credit
elective. As in the past, there will
be two sections: Tuesdays from
9:30 A.M. to 4:00 P.M. and
Thursdays from 9:30 A.M. to 4:00
P.M.
The cost for this year’s class
will be $12.00 per day. If the
student has his own equipment,
the cost will be $lO.OO per day.
The $12.00 fee covers
transportation to and from the ski
resort, equipment including skis,
boots, and poles, all-day lift
ticket, individualized instruction,
and plenty of free skiing time.
Each ski section will make
seven trips during the winter
term. The total cost is $84.00 for
those renting equipment and
$70.00 for those with their own
equipment.
