SENATE CONSIDERS
TUITION RELIEF ACT
Washington—
A bill to provide a $lOOO
income tax deduction or $250
tax credit for tuition paid for
education from the first grade
through graduate school was in-
troduced on March 1 by U.S. Sen-
ator Richard S. Schweiker(R-Pa.).
The Schweiker bill offers
a choice between two forms of
tax relief:a deduction before fig
uring taxable income of up to
$lOOO for tuition paid per eligi
ble individuals or a tax credit of
50% of tuition payments, up to $250
per individual, which could be sub
tracted from federal taxes.
Eligible individuals include
the taxpayer, his or her spouse,
and any dependenta claimed ,on the
tax return. The tax deduction or
credit would apply to tuition paid
to private elementary and second
ary schools, all public and private
institutions of higher learning,
and vocational schools.
"We are deluding ourselves if
we think public education in this
country can survive without a via
ble system of private education,"
Schweiker said. "If, for example,
the private and parochial schools
wei.e to shut down overnight, there
is no way in the world the
public school systems and the
taxpayers could assume the burden.
"The - popular image of pri
"te schools usually calls to
d the elite academies. But
in fact most non-public school
students are the children of
middle-class parents with average
incomes. These families have sac
rificed to come up with tuition
payments, even though they are
paying taxes to support public
schools. But as tuition costs
rise, thousands of children must
leave their schools and enter
the public system. The Tuition
Relief Act will enable these fami
lies to again seek an alternative."

SICKENS
Yes, people should care
more for others around them,
but while you're working at
it, try looking at yourself;
it might shock you.
One fimal point, try
using the last 13 words of
your letter and starting
over...like they say, the
third time's a charm.
Very Sincerely,
