Guns: Good or Bad? Since it was suggested at University Park months ago, the idea of arming Security has gradually filtered down to the Commonwealth campuses, low would some of the students on this campus feel if our Secur ity was armed? "I have no objections," said Joe Melnick, president of SGA. "The improvements that I really want to see happen ares 1* proper screening for all personnel 2. proper training for all Security personnel 3. establishment of proper radio communication with the'State Police and the other area police forces 4. arrest power, which would enable this campus to handle its own crimi nal cases without bring ing in outside agencies•" SGA's Vice-President, Jim Durso, stated! "Arming the Security force may seem, to those involved, the best way to enact more stringent per- sonnel standards and to facil itate communication with out* side police agencies. Arming Security is a means to these ends. Perhaps not the best means but an honest attempt to upgrade the quality of the Se curity forcd at the Hazleton Campus." "Definitely not," said Susan Prey, secretary of EHC. "I have no faith in the so called •proper training 1 that is assured if Security gets guns. As of last year Security didn't even know how to operate a fire extinguisher, so how can you trust them with a gun?" SGA Representative Diane Zell stated that she was "com pletely against the idea. I don't think there's any need for weapons and T think arming Security would be disasterous for this campus." Lastly, SGA Freshmen Repre sentative Kathy Johnson added her thoughts on the issue! "When bringing up such issues, nobody remembers Kent State— and they should." SMOKER'S GOUGH In the U.S., 533,000 million cigarettes were consumed at a cost of more than $10,000,000,- 000 in 1971.
