Soccer Starts The men's soccer team, coached by Mr. Tom Caccese, opened their season with an away game September 20 against Altoona. The Highacres team came home with a 3-1 win. Returning starters this season are Dennis Williams, forward (leading scorer in league last season with a school record of 20 goals), full-backs Chris Bartniek, Gary Johnson, and Kurt Kreisher, half-backs Van Woolcock and Dale Ober, and goalie Dan Weimer. This cancellation is part ly due to lack of interest. Last year only eight girls came out for the team; from a fi nancial point of view, it was not worth renting a court for practices for these few. An other problem involved the lo cation of practices, which were held in town and were incon vienient for team members who lived in the Residence Hall. However, with the com pletion of the new gym next year, the prospects of renewing women's basketball at Highacres seems hopeful,. Karate Club - by Tony Greco | nV jted A new organization is the subject of much attention at Highacres this fall. The Ka rate Club, with Mr. Richard Campbell as adviser, operates in conjunction with a karate course offered by the physical education department. The club is affiliated with a local school and a na tional organization. Locally, the group is associated with the Sembach Karate School. The. main instructor at Sembach is Robert Seamon, who owns a second degree black belt. The national affiliate is the Na tional Karate and Jiu-Jiutsu Union, headed by Richard Bail lorgeon, who wears a sixth de gree black belt. Club meetings are held every Wednesday evening from 7:00 to 9:00 PM in the basement 1 of the commons. The physical education class meets every Tuesday and Thursday from 10:00 to 11:55 AM, and members receive both training in karate and one credit. The class is filled; however, new members are welcome to join the club. Spectators are also welcome to drop in any Wednesday night and watch the club in action. The president of the Ka rate Club is Bob Kerstetter, with Mike Wirth as vice pres ident. Kerstetter holds a brown belt in Kershin Kahn, while Wirth owns a brown belt ' in tae Kwan Do. So far, 60 students have joined the club. Experience is not necessary and anyone from beginner to expert, both male and female, axe welcome to join. The cost is $15.00 per term. Those selected for this year's team ares Mary Ann Bar letta, Ellen Bartleson, Rose mary Ciampi, Kim Davis, Karen Heine, Mary Prances Kakabar, Sue Kinard, Debbie Mattioli, Mary Ritzie, Marce Sos, Jean Spishock, and Gayle Zimmerman. The team is in the East ern Division, which includes the Commonwealth Campuses in the eastern part of the state. Home matches will be played at the Highacres tennis courts. On November 8, the Eastern Commonwealth Campus Tournament will be held at Scranton. Those teams finishing in first, second, or third place will re ceive trophies. When asked about her thoughts on this year's team, Ms. Jago replied, "I am very hopeful. We had 20 girls try out for the team, and it looks like we have a lot of experi ence.
