Hazleton Undergraduate Center
was opened in 1934. The school
has been a positive addition
to the community ever since
its birth in the Markle Bank
Building to its present lo
cation at Highacres.
The beginning of our
campus was a humble one. In
1934 the college had an enroll
ment of forty-seven students
taught by seven faculty mem
bers in three rooms. The ori
ginal home of the Center in
the Markle Bank Building con
sisted of two small class
rooms, an administrative of.
rice, and an undernourished
library. Robert Eiche, now
Director of the Altoona Cam..
pus, was the first administra
tive head. The administrative
leadership has been a contrib..
:ding factor to the progress
the Hazleton Campus has made.
From the beginning to the pre
sent, these have been the ad*
ministrative directors:

Increading enrollment nec
essitated novning into larger
quarters. So, having outgrown
its original quarters within
three years, the Hazleton Cen
ter moved toethe West Broad
Street School, which was made
available by the Hazleton City
School Board in 1937. At this
time, the student enrollment
climbed to fifty-seven.
Four years later, the
United States entered World
War 11. It was at this point
in the history of the Hazleton
Campus that its progress was
not a steady one. In 1943
there was a question of the
continuation of the institu
tion because of the low eloo.
rollment during the war years.
