PAGE 4 - HIGHACRES COLLEGIAN, OCTOBER 29, 1973 The Allman Brothers Banc is the only band I know that can take a beating and bounce back. I often wondered what was going to happen to the fan tastic band from Macon, Georgia after the deaths of Duane Allman and Berry Oakly. Well, I'm very happy to report that the Allman Brothers Band is still one of the best and most electrifying groups around. The latest al - buns" Brothers and Sisters," proves this beyond a shadow of a doubt. This album, like all of their others, you could listen to forever. If you think you can pick out a few of Berry Oakly's bass licks on the album, you're right. Fortunately Berry made two cuts on the album be fore his untimely demise. If you want a natural "high" just close your eyes and turn on "Jelly, Jelly." It's a slow blues number featuring a piano solo by Chuck Leavell, a new addition to the band, whose playing is fantastic. Berry Oakly's replacement, Lamar Wil liams, does a'good job, but I don't think he'll ever capture Berry's magic with the bass. With the use of double tracking on the song "Ramblin' Man" it actually sounds like the "good of days" with Duane and Berry there. When Duane was alive there was never a need for double tracking. Berry was there for that and'"Wasted Words." "Pony Boy" is a good time piece that makes you want to stamp your foot. With Dicky Betts' usual fantastic guitar pickin' and ccantry twang vocals and Greg Allman's drawling vocals the Allman Brnther6 Band still makes the same great music. If you missed them on televi sion, either Friday the 12th on Channel 6 or Saturday the 13th on Channel 5, "Dun Kirshner Pre sents," kick yourself. As usual their live performances are fantastic. Some of the old magic is gone, as one might expect, but their great- k Yatsko ness shines on. If you want one band you could never get sickof, the Allman Brothers Band is it. Although there may be many suggestions for this category, the compositions that I have chosen, I have chosen not only for their musi cal content, but also because of the quality of the musician that recorded the song. "Stairway to Heaven" is, without a doubt, one of the most beautiful and powerful songs ever recorded. The melodic guitar starts building from the first chord andthesn't stop un til it reaches an intensity that few Bones, ever achieve. And its beauty isn't all wrapped up in the music, for the lyrics are delivering a message that once heard, is not easily for gotten.
