On every team, in every
sport, there are those athletes
who don't get to play in games
as often as others.
Probably the most popular
name that can be applied to such
athletes is reservell. Yet, despite
lack of playing time, their role is
just as important to a team as
the starters.
One such ballplayer on the
Capitol Campus Lions is Pat
Bentley. Bentley doesn's look
like an athlete at all, let alone a
basketball player. Yet he, like all
the other reserves on the team,
contributes something just as
important as points, rebounds
and assists--attitude.
Bentley feels that it is his job
to psyche everyone up for the
game. He leads one of the most
spirited pre-game warmups
you'll ever see. He is a coach's
dream when it comes to
attitude. "The most important
thing is the team, not me. Sitting
on the bench doesn't bother me
at all. I'd rather watch the game
from the bench and see what
we're doing wrong. Then, when I
get a chance to go out there, I
can try to correct it."
Bentley has played a key role
in the astonishing improvement
of the Lions this year. In
comparing last year's team to
this year's, he cited better
personnel and better attitude as
two key ingredients. "Last year,
we just played. This year, we
have a winning attitude. The
only reason we go out on the
court is to win. The only reason
we put a uniform on--put our
shoes on--is to win." He
continued, "Last year, if
somebody got down or had a
bad night, it ended there. This
year, if somebody gets down,
somebody else is always there to
pick him up."
Bentley attributes this
tremendous change in attitude,
and thus, the general
improvement of the team, to
Coach Al Williams. "The
difference this year is coaching.
"The Coach" (that's the only
way anyone on the team ever
refers to Williams) brought us
together and made us act like a
college basketball team. He's like
the father of a family of thirteen
boys and he knows that all of us
contribute something, or else he
wouldn't let us wear the
uniform."

Pat Bentley
Bentley feels that the win
over Stevens Trade at Lancaster
on February 2, was the make or
break game for the Lions. He
commented on that on the bus
ride to Lancaster that night.
"We've got to win one on the
road. We've proved that we can
win at home. If we can win this
one on the road, we'll be set for
the rest of the season. If we can
win this one, we'll be in great
shape mentally for the rematch
against Spring Garden."
Among this year's highlights
so far, Bentley rated the win
over Schuylkill as the greatest.
"It was a win for everybody but
especially for the Coach. He
worked so hard for that, and he
deserved it." Other highlights
were Tommy Ogden's 45-point
night against WKBO, and the
baskets scored by Jerry Baskoff
and Dennis Hlavaty, two fellow
reserves, in the win over
Schuylkill. "I went over and
hugged them both for it. I was
so happy for them" remarked
Bentley.
Some ball players score
points, some grab rebounds,
some pass off for assists, some
play defense, and some just
believe and make others believe.
The next time you're at a game,
look for No. 43, Pat Bentley, the
22-year old senior from Etna,
Pennsylvania. You'll see spirit
like you've never seen before.
Operation Contact
The Student Government
Association will present another
show in its "Operation Contact"
series on WZAP on Wednesday,
February 21, Air Time is 6:15
p.m.
The moderator for the
program will by Aaron Spicher.
Guests include SGA Senators
Mike Leasher, Marilyn Levin and
Bill Matthews. Director for the
show is Ron Snyder.
The senators will discuss
various issues prevalent to the
SGA and other aspects of
campus life. The listening
audience is invited to phone in
questions by dialing 944-4251.
