Behrend wins one of two
The Behrend Lions take game one of a high-scoring
double header against the Pitt-Bradford Panthers
The Behrend Lions took the field Wednesday
afternoon in beautiful weather and split games
with Pitt-Bradford in a double header. The Lions
took the first game 8-3 while they dropped the
second one 9-3.
Freshman pitcher Ryan Jacobs was the high
light of the first game, pitching six solid innings
and giving up only three hits and three walks
earning him the win. Junior Ryan Zamiskie
came in for the one inning save and struck out
two of the last three batters to end the game.
“In the first inning, things were getting to my
head, but I calmed down and hit my spots,” Ja
cobs said.
Jacobs got in trouble in the first inning as Pitt-
Bradford loaded the bases with two outs, but he
quickly put them away with one of his six strike
outs throughout the game.
Senior shortstop Josh Fyffe sparked the Lions
offensively with a triple to left center, bringing in
senior outfielder Jon Gray and eventually scored
after an RBI single by sophomore catcher Ryan
Geibel. Behrend was able to get two more men
across the plate by the fourth inning and jumped
out to a 4-0 lead.
The team was able to pull out ahead, adding
four more runs thanks to a four-run sixth inning
when Bradford’s pitching staff hit two batters
and walked a third to load the bases with no outs.
Senior Dustin Dubensky and Geibel both sin
gled, driving in three runs between the two.
Geibel led the team offensively, going 3-3 with
a walk and also posted three RBl’s to boot. Gray
went 2-3 with a walk to add to the Behrend of
fense.
“We earned the win in game one. Bradford’s
pitcher had a great performance in the second
game,” said head coach Paul Benim.

loved it.”
Kang moved to the United

years-old. When he was a
freshman at South Park High
School in 2003, he wanted to
try out for track and field again.

second game as he pitched all seven innings and
silenced Behrend’s big bats for most the game.
Behrend took an early 1-0 lead in the first in
ning, when Fyffe reached home from third on a
throwing error committed by Pitt-Bradford.
Pitt-Bradford fought back in the third, scoring
two runs and running away with it from there
limiting the Lions to only three runs.
“It was a complete flip-flop of two games,”
Benim said. “We did a lot of good things last
week against Penn State Altoona that just did not
happen this game.”

Behrend finished game one with a total of 11
hits while commiting just a single error, and
posted seven hits and just two errors in game
two of the day.
“We hit right through the pitchers in the first
game,” Jacobs said. “One bad inning in the sec

down.”

donia at home and then travels to La Roche in an

It was here where he learned
the other events of track and
field.
“My coach’s motto [from
freshman yeaff was to try
everything,” Kang said. “I tried
everything, and I ended up lik
ing the pole vault, javelion, and
the sprinting events.”
Certainly, that was the right
move as he excelled in those
events. To this day, he still par
ticipates in javelin in some
meets, but he always does the
pole vault.
His recent achievements in
clude setting a new Penn State

over 15 feet at the Wheeling In

“That was my dream in high
school,” Kang said. “I was al
ways taught by my coaches that
records were meant to be bro
ken."
With six years of training
under his belt, it is not surpris
ing that he has performed to
this level. Prior to joining the
South Park track and field
team, the only experience he
had was running.
pole vault coach taught
me the fundamentals of pole
vaulting,” Kang said. “He did a
great job and built on that.”
Participating in track invita
tional in high school gave him
opportunites to meet college
coaches, including the Behrend
coaching staff.
“I was excited to have them
as coaches,” Kang said. “They
built on basic training to help
me reach the top.”
As a junior, Kang’s top prior
ities are school and finishing on
time, but he also wants to push
himself as well as the younger
track team members.
“I want to try to keep my
grades up and balance my so

life,” Kang said. “My goal for
track is to break more records
and to train better.”
