WOMEN’S WATER POLO
Behrend drops three
games during invite
The Junker Center recently hosted the Penn-
State Behrend women’s water polo invitational,
which included 14 games over the span of two
days. This included mostly division II teams
such as Mercyhurst, Gannon, Villanova,
Chatham University, Utica, and Toronto.
The Behrend women opened up their invita
tional against Toronto University last Saturday
in the third of eight games played in the Junker
Center pool that day. After junior Tegan Boland
and freshman Mary Ellen Spooner both scored
one goal apiece for the Lady Lions, the offense
fell off as they fell to Toronto by a final score of
19-2.
The Blue and White were back in the pool the
next morning to face off against fellow Erie
school, the Gannon Golden Knights in the sec-

involved in tennis, but his
mother didn’t give him much of
a choice but to get involved.
“My mom forced me to do a
tennis camp for a week in the
summer before my freshman
year of high school, because I
wasn't doing anything. But, I
ended up really enjoying it and
kept on playing,” Blackstone
said.
It is fair to say that his mom
encouraged him to play the
right sport, because Blackstone
has been dominating the courts
for Behrend.
Blackstone helped to lead the
Lions to a 2-1 week, with wins
against D’Youville and Pitt-
Greensburg, and a dropped

ond game of that Saturday. The only goal of the
game again came by the arm of Spooner late in
the second period of play.
Mercyhurst College was the last competitor for
the Lions in their second game of the day and
third of the invitational. The Lakers won their
first three games of the tournament against Vil
lanova, Chatham University, and Utica before
blanking the Lady Lions 5-0. Behrend fell behind
early, giving up three goals in the first period,
and was only able to mount nine shots on goal,
all of which saved by Mercyhurst goaltender
Hope Rozelle.
A positive for the women’s water polo team is
the potential they have coming from a strong
swimming and diving program. The team has
five freshmen currently oh the roster and are
hoping to add success to the program in the fu
ture.

“Coach Tristan pointed out a couple flaws
throughout the weekend which really allowed us
to come together a little and fix these flaws,”
freshman Stefania Pontillo said. “Everyone has
their bad days, but this weekend our team
showed we can get through it and play together.”
Next the Lady Lions will travel to Chicago for
the Wheaton Invitational this weekend.
“Our first regional game for this Friday is in
Chicago, and hopefully we can kick some butt
while we are there,” Pontillo said.
