Sports WOMEN’S TENNIS Tennis prepares lor AMCC championships ALEC ITALIANO staff writer The Penn State Behrend women’s tennis team had quite a bit of success this season tak ing a 13-4 overall record (9-1 in the conference) into the AMCC tournament this weekend at the Oxford Club in Wexford, PA. The Lions, with all of their starters returning from last year, are tied for first at the top of the conference after falling to Frostburg State (4-5) early in the season marking their only conference loss. Since that loss the team re bounded, going on an 11-1 run losing only to Grove City to fin ish out the season. The team plays under head coach Jeff Barger, who is enter ing his twelfth year at the posi tion. Barger has led the ladies ten nis team to seven AMCC titles in the last 10 years, including four straight since 2004. “I feel very good about our chances. We are playing well right now,” Barger said. “As long as we avoid any upsets we should be near the top. I give our doubles teams a good chance to win and all of our sin gles players should do well.” WOMEN’S SOCCER The women's soccer team defeated conference opponent Laßoche by a score of 4-1. The Lions'goals were scored by four different play ers. Freshman Meredith Gipson scored one and had an assist. An other was scored by junior Jaclyn Stottlemyer, who gave Behrend a 2-1 lead after Laßoche tied it up. Just before half-time, Julia Schroek scored to give the Lions a 3-1 lead. Hobaugh was recently named the Enterprise Rent-A- Car athlete of the week for her performance in defeating D’Y ouville Frostburg State and Penn State Altoona last week. Hobaugh is optimistic head ing into the weekend. “I'd like to think with confi dence that we ll sweep away the victory this weekend,” Hobaugh said. "We won't leave the court until the title is won. Our competition is not easy; skill and attitude are key.” Hobaugh plans on making a run at the all-time record for ca reer singles victory. The former AMCC New comer of the Year and Behrend Rookie of the Year boasts a 42- 6 singles record and is chasing Jamie Brubaker’s record of 58- 18. The other captain, Christy Calvert, was slowed by injuries this season but still holds an impressive 33-11 career singles record. The junior class has given Barger many options in the sin gles and doubles line-up keep ing opponents off guard and guessing who they will be play ing. Elissa Swartz, Erin Bliley and Hillary Lasher all started as juniors and will play a role in the team’s performance in AMCC tournament. Shawn '. She holds an impres sive 15-2 singles record and 19- 2 doubles record so far in her career and will be a player to watch this weekend. The team has been practicing every day during this cold week preparing to repeat as AMCC champions. “I believe we have worked all season long for this, and I have full confidence that we will win this year,” junior Erin Bliley said.
