Friday, April 6, 2007 Who will be this years Master? INTRAMURAL UPDATE By Andy McLachlan contributing writer The 2007 Masters is finally in full swing. The PGA tour for 2007 began when 96 PGA profes sionals teed off at Augusta National on Thursday. All eyes will be on a few golfers in particular, but a surprise winner could very well steal the story in Augusta, Georgia. The one golfer that sticks out above the rest is golf phenom Tiger Woods. The 31-year-old has put up extraordinary numbers over the past decade. At this point in his career, most see him as the best ever in his sport. Woods has won the last two majors and a total of four Masters in his career. Even though Woods shot one over par the first day at Augusta and did not win the Masters last year, he is still easily the favorite to win it this year. Last year's winner, Phil Mickelson, had a rough first day, shooting four over par. Even though he is the defending champion, he knows there is a certain golfer named Tiger Woods that he needs CONTRIBLITED PHOTO to keep his eye on. "I think it's a fun challenge to beat him. He's Mickelson celebrates after last year's Masters victory most likely the best player the game has ever seen," said Mickelson Mickelson has been on fire of late, winning three majors over the past three years. Even with playing some of the best golf of his career, he knows he is not at Tiger's level. "If I have a great rest of my career, and I go out and win twenty more tournaments and seven more majors to get to fifty wins and ten majors, which would be an awesome career, I still won't get to where he's at today. - The leaders after day one were Justin Rose Previous Masters winners: 2006 - Phil Mickelson 2005 - Tiger Woods 2004 - Phil Mickelson 2003 - Mike Weir 2002 - Tiger Woods Itax Woods IMO - Vijay Singh from South Africa and Brett Wetterich from Florida. Rose. who led early at the 2004 Masters, will try his hest to hold onto the lead that slipped away from him three years ago. This is Wetterich's first time at the top of a major leader hoard. Even though Mickelson and Woods have won the last three Masters. a unknown could end that trend this year.
