Friday, December 8, 2006 AIDS awareness observed during December By Scott Muska staff writer The AIDS epidemic has swept across the world, killing roughly 25 million people, including over 500,000 Americans, and has negatively affected the lives of countless human beings. There is no known cure for the virus, and the treatments have become difficult to advance. cre- acing a sense of urgency among doctors Who fear that this quickly preading fatal disease and its effects will only go downhill. It is because of the fear of this disease that World AIDS Day came about. It is an annual LNAtOS CONTRIBUTED PHOTO Around the world, approximately forty million people have HIV. event that occurs on December I st, and the purpose of this day is to raise aware ness of this deadly and devastating disease. Many organizations have been formed to help enhance the effect that AIDS Day has and the amount of people that it touches. U 2 frontman Bono founded an organization, called RED, that has really helped to expand AIDS awareness not only in America. hut all over the world. Bono has secured various powerful companies' support and aid through his RED campaign. These companies include Emporio Armani. GAP, Apple. American Express. Converse and Motorola, and they all have manufactured and sold a line of RED items. These items can he purchased. and a percentage of the money a consumer spends on them is given to RED. who then transfers it to the purchase of anti retroviral medicines that can help keep people suf fering from AIDS alive. They send these pills to the people of Africa. where roughly 5,500 people die as a result of the HIV virus daily. The RED organization is non-for-profit and Author of FISH! and several other books about the FISH! Philosophy, Harry Paul spoke on campus Wednesday, Dec. 6. The theme of his lecture was, "You can't always do what you love, but you can always love what you do." Paul also spoke about creating a better work environment, which in turn creates better customer service, which in turn creates a profitable business. Many large corporations such as Sprint, Applebee's and Citizens First Bank practice the FISH! Philosophy. The philosophy is based on several mantras—Be There, Play, Make Their Day and Choose Your Attitude. The RED manifesto, which can be found on their popular website, www.joinred.com, states very clearly the reason- describe their mission, how the donations work and how the medication will help many people. Bono recently addressed the nation through a video made for Internet video powerhouse You Tube, and he pleaded with the world to help the cause to fight AIDS. He spoke about the neg ligence of providing these ailing people with the inexpensive medication that their lives depend on. He said, "This is mad. You are not mad to think that we can do something about this. Join RED for World Aids Day. Go to joinred.com." Bono is doing a very noble thing attempting to help these people, and it is something that can easily be done. Sorority organizes benefit for injured sister By Briana Theiss contributive \Nritei While many Penn State Behrend students are fret ting over last minute assignments and upcoming finals, one student is fretting over matters of life and death. Junior Biology major Jennifer Hughes recently learned that her childhood friend. former dance team, choir, musical and gymnastics partner Sophie Baker was involved in a tragic accident. Hughes says her 21-year-old friend and her hus band Jared went to check on their friend, 32-year old Patrick Henry, at his home in New Castle on Monday, November 28, 2006. The couple was con cerned about Henry's well-being because of previ ous comments he made about wanting to harm him self. The couple was outside Henry's home when Baker smelled natural gas. According to Jared, Sophie began running from the scene and the house blew up shortly after. State Police fire marshall ruled arson as the cause of the explosion. The incident was also ruled inten tional as evidence had been found confirming that the gas service line into the house was tampered with and disconnected from one of the appliances in the basement, in an attempt to commit suicide. According to Hughes, Jared Baker and Henry were flown to Mercy Hospital where they were list ed in critical condition: Jared Baker was later released. Sophie Baker, however. was taken to Jameson Hospital in New Castle and later flown to West Penn Hospital's burn trauma center where she was listed in critical condition and later, serious condition. The Friday after the incident. Sophie would have been covered by her husband's insurance. Hughes says. "Between the life flights to Pittsburgh, the sur geries, medications and eventually skin grafts for Sophie, the Bakers will 'he thousands of dollars in debt. - Hughes feels helpless about the situation. "How can you help someone that something so trag ic happened to and that you grew up with when you live so fiir away? I feel helpless in the situation, but I want to do something to help them... Especially around the holidays." Hughes is a member of Theta Phi Alpha sorority. She and her sisters are coming together to raise money for the Bakers. In order to do this, Theta Phi Alpha is sending letters to faculty and staff mem bers asking for donations. They will also have a table selling candy grams for SI and accepting donations outside of Bruno's on Monday. December 11 through Friday. December 15 from 12 -- 2 PM.
