Cleon Smith, BBACC 01 is here again SGA prepares for this year's nearing election Election time By Kim McCray staff writer This year’s Student Government As sociation elections are just around the corner. The elections are being held between Monday and Tuesday online. There are three freshmen senate seats and one senator seat open this year. Student Government Association is the representative body of the students at Behrend. SGA is a line of commu nication between students and faculty. They allocate money each semester for club programs, events, and trips and they represent all of the clubs on campus through eight councils. There are several committees within SGA that work to tackle student concerns such as parking, housing, course selec tion, and food services. Five freshman are running for sen ate in the 2004 SGA election. Tanya Doggwiler, Kevin Huang, Teal Ingerick, Ashley Smith and Christo pher Übelacker are in the running for the three freshman seats available. In the race for senator are Andrea Bottone, Derek Li, Seth Laird, Meredith Straub and Zach Mentz. If elected senator, he or she will re ceive the duties of having to serve on two committees as well as hold two of fice hours in the SGA Senate Office weekly. He or she is also required to attend all general meetings as well as appropriate committee meetings, and he or she relays the concerns of the stu dent body to the senate. Students can vote at http:// secure.bd.psu.edu/sgavoting. The vot ing will take place online this year so students may have the added comfort of voting from their homes or dorm rooms. This website is avail able from any computer that has internet access and the SGA election committee will also have a laptop set up outside of Bruno’s so students can conveniently vote there throughout the two election days. Justin Curry, GAS 07, vice president of SGA, believes it is vital that students vote in SGA elections because if it weren’t for the students, student gov ernment would not have a purpose on the campus. He also thinks that it is important for students to convey their concerns and problems about Behrend to SGA so they can work to make the college ex perience enjoyable and meaningful. “I can’t stress enough how important it is for students to vote in this elec tion. By the turnout of candidates, we know that students are getting inter ested in student government,” Curry said. Karena Bibbins-McKeever, POLSC 05 semester’s election has been unique in many ways. Hilera is new to student government and also to the Behrend campus. He encourages students to get out and vote because it is their right and responsibility as students of this campus to make the effort to vote. “It has been a challenge to get this election process running smoothly. However, this campus and I have the privilege of having organized and dedi cated leaders who have helped throughout the entire process. Scott and Justin are excellent. Without their help and guidance I would not have been able to work like I have. “The elections committee this se mester has also dedicated long hours to make sure the elections were suc cessful. The helping hand the public relations committee has extended us is also worthy of mention. Finally, I would like to take this opportunity to wish all of the candidates the best of luck,” Hilera said. The SGA will have the results by 5:15 p.m. on Tuesday and will be in forming the candidates of them that evening. Bad Credit/No Credit? The Credit Solutions Dept can help!
