Penn State beef cattle sale revives
time-honored tradition, raises
$lll,OOO
The first beef cattle sale held by Penn State's College of Agricultural Sciences
since 1990 generated $111,035, attracted buyers from six states, exposed a new
class of students to livestock marketing and renewed a time-honored tradition.
The "Penn State Proud Beef Cattle Sale," held Nov. 7 at the Beef-Sheep Center,
included all of the Angus cows in the University's herd born before 1999, their
calves, bred heifers and a 2-year-old bull. Commercial cows in the sale included
bred cows, bred heifers, heifer calves and steer calves for a total of 99 head.
Voytus Angus Farm of Pennsylvania bought the high-selling lot at $2,800. The
sales teach students how to prepare cattle for merchandising and allow Penn
State to share genetics with other producers.

The medical minute: Thursday
good day to quit smoking
The American Cancer Society's annual "Great American Smokeout" was Thurs
day. If you smoke, now is a good time to become a non-smoker. According to the
latest edition of the Medical Minute, a service of Penn State Milton S. Hershey
Medical Center, smoking kills 440,000 Americans annually- almost one person
every minute. Most smoking deaths are from lung cancer, heart disease and chronic
lung disease. Before the first Surgeon General's report on the hazards of smok
ing in 1964, about half of adult Americans smoked. Fortunately today that num
ber is about 22 percent overall. However, 90 percent of us have nicotine in our
blood from secondhand smoke, which causes about 3,000 lung cancer deaths
yearly among non-smokers.
THON carnival reunites
families, students
The Eighth Annual THON Family Carnival was held in White Building on
Penn States University Park campus Sunday. Four Diamonds families from across
the state reunited with Penn State students and fellow Four Diamonds families at
the "Sweetest THON Carnival" themed event. The carnival is held in conjunc
tion with the Penn State IFC/Panhellenic Dance Marathon, the largest student
run philanthropy in the world, benefiting The Four Diamonds Fund for families
with children who have cancer being treated at Penn State Children's Hospital.
Four Diamonds families had the opportunity to participate in games, make arts
and crafts and enjoy entertainment provided by Penn State students.
