The Behrend Beacon
How the bookstore really works
by Dana Vaccaro
Ever since Penn State Behrend was around, there
always was a bookstore. The store may not have been
down at the bottom of the Reed building; it was how
ever: located at another area of campus. In Behrend's
early years, the bookstore was located on the top floor
of the Turnbull Building. Penn State Behrend's book
store is a great place to buy gifts for the holiday sea
son, items for the dorm rooms and, of course, books.
The bookstore is open six days out of the week. On
Monday they are open from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday
through Friday they are opened from 8 a.m. to 4:30
p.m. and on Saturday from 1I a.m. to 2 p.m. The
hours at the beginning and the end of the semester are
different due to the mad rush of purchasing and buying
back of books.
Speaking of books, let us investigate a little about
the process of the buy-back rate for them. Heidi
Savage, manager of the student bookstore, gave
information about the process. If the book will be
used in the following semester the students, will receive
! half of the new price, Savage said. An
example of a buy-back process of a new
book follows: If it costs $lOO the student
•will receive $5O
. On the other hand, the used book buy
back rate equals half of the original cost.
For example, if the used book cost $75 and
the original price was $lOO, then the buy
back rate would be $5O. Savage also said
that if the book will not be reused next
, semester, the bookstore may buy the book
back at a cheaper rate and send it to a used
book company.
The bookstore is one place where the
students are guaranteed to find a certain
book that is requested by the instructor.
Savage says that the students are now
noticing that other places such as
amazon.com do not carry the proper edition
or they say they have the book but it is not
in stock. That reason often will de:ay the
arrival time of the book for students.
Savage mentioned that her sales went
down at the beginning of the amazon.com
findings; however, they are now back up
because of previous reasons and also the
prices are not as cheap as they used to be.
Adding the book, taxes and shipping and
handling purchasing a book from
amazon.com could be quite an expense.

If it is the long line at the beginning of the semester
that is holding students back from purchasing books
at the bookstore, they need not to worry. Students are
able to reserve their books for next semester as soon
as they finalize the schedule until two to three weeks
before the next class period starts.
Savage encourages students to stop into the
bookstore.
"Everybody blames us for the prices of the text
books being high, but it's not our fault," she said, "We
have to go according to what publishers tell us to."
If students have questions about anything within the
bookstore, they are encouraged to ask questions, before
pointing fingers at the bookstore employees about the
prices.
"We provide a convenient way for students to get
their books as well as any other apparel or school
supplies that they need," said Sean Sundy, 09 HIST, a
student worker at the bookstore.
Alicia Raffensberger, 05 COMBA, who works at
the bookstore said, "all of the staff are really friendly
and will help anyone find what they need."

Through the Looking Glass
Soaked from the rain and heavily intoxicated while cheering on the
University of Wisconsin at a football game, two attorneys went into the down
stairs laundry room of a nearby apartment building afterward to dry their clothes.
They stripped naked and put their clothes into a dryer, and, while they were
waiting, commenced singing loudly and in a drunken fashion.
Residents complained. Police arrived. The men who were "extremely
uncooperative" were arrested for disorderly conduct.
THAT'S A BIT MORE LIKE IT I
A man arrested twice in the same place in Sydney, Australia, for exceeding the 60 I
mph speed limit, replaced the 60 mph sign at the scene of his offenses with a7O I
mph sign he stole from another location. I
A male convict was mistakenly incarcerated with female inmates in a Kentucky
jail for more than eight months before he came forward and told authorities he is
a man. He was immediately removed. Throughout his confinement, none of the
women prisoners complained.
WE WON'T BE MAKING ANY STOPS
A teenager talked his way into the cabin of a commuter train in Berlin
during the evening rush hour by posing as a replacement driver, and then took a
train full of passengers on a joyride. He wouldn't relinquish his control when
police caught up with him, so they had to shoot him. He is OK.
NO, BAD DOG! CHASE NOW, EAT LATER
A police dog, sent into a candy factory in Trondheim, Norway, to chase
down two teenage burglars, became distracted by the trail of chocolate they
had left behind. The dog gave up the hunt, choosing instead to gorge himself

Russian authorities removed the inhabitants of Vrangel Island, off the Arctic
Chukotka peninsula, in 1997 when they turned it into a
reserve for polar bears. But one young woman, Vasilina Alpaun, went
back there to live in her home shortly thereafter. A polar bear killed her on her
doorstep.
