CELEBRATE NATIONAL CHEMISTRY WEEK
ATTEND AN EVENT, DRAW A POSTER
Children and adults in the Erie area are invited to take part in National Chem
istry Week activities scheduled for Oct. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Millcreek
Mall and Saturday, Nov. 8, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at expEßlEnce Children's Mu
seum, 420 French St. Activities will center on this year's theme, "Earth's Atmo
sphere and beyond!" and all events are free and open to the public.
National Chemistry Week is sponsored annually by the American Chemical
Society, the world's largest scientific society. This year's theme, "Earth's Atmo
sphere and Beyond!" was sparked by the Earth's recent close encounter with Mars
and the public's growing fascination with astronomy and our galaxy.
At the Millcreek Mall on Saturday, Oct. 25, children and adults are invited
to participate in hands-on chemistry activities that demonstrate and celebrate this
year's theme. At the expEßlEnce Museum on Saturday, Nov. 8, children ages 4-10
will have an opportunity to learn how chemistry affects the Earth and sky.
Students K-12 are invited to participate in the National Chemistry Week Poster
Contest by drawing a poster illustrating contributions made by chemistry to the ad
vancement of aviation and atmospheric chemistry. Some topics to be considered
might be air, weather, rainbows, the ozone layer and clouds. Posters may not exceed
8 1/2 by 14 inches and must be drawn using crayons, paint, colored pencils or mark
ers. One entry is permitted per student. The person submitting the winning poster
will receive a chemistry T-shirt and a hands-on chemistry program for their school.
Get your meetings, activities, announcements, etc. on our Calendar of Events Pagel

SMITH CHAPEL AND CARILLON
EARN ARCHITECTURAL RECOGNITION
The Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel and the Floyd and Juanita
Smith Carillon at Penn State Erie, The Behrend College, have been se
lected to appear in the 2003 American School and University Architectural
Portfolio issue. Judges for the issue selected 207 projects from across the
United States to be profiled in the November publication, a sourcebook
used all year by administrators at schools and universities across the coun
try.
"This is a wonderful tribute to the design excellence of the Smith
Chapel and Carillon," said Dr. Jack Burke, campus executive officer and
dean of Penn State Erie. "I congratulate Noelker and Hull, the architects
who designed the building, on this recognition."
The Larry and Kathryn Smith Chapel was dedicated in June 2002.
It is a multi-faith chapel available to students, faculty, and staff for wor
ship, meetings, concerts, and gatherings. The college will dedicate the
chapel's pipe organ, given by the Smiths in honor of their children, Colleen
and Kevin, on November 8.
