Track team excels at Mount Union Invitations
by Kevin Fiorenzo
staff writer
The track team traveled to the Mount
Union Invitational, a non- scoring event,
this past Saturday to take on Division II
and 111 teams.
The men have been doing fairly well
in their events and this most recent
contest was no different. In the 110
hurdles, Isiah Meek placed second with
a time of 14.88. Dave Masilunas also
participated in the event, finishing eighth
at 15.26. Both have qualified for
ECAC's. Meek was also able to
accumulate a provisional national
qualifying time in the hurdles. In
sprinting events, Jason Kuntz
participated in the 100 meter dash. He
finished in eigth place at 11.16.
The men's team also has a stron
Lacrosse finishes season with win over rival Slippery Rock
The Behrend club lacrosse team finished its
season last weekend with a convincing 8-2 win
over rival Slippery Rock.
After scoring in the first quarter, the Rockets
were unable to penetrate the Lions defense until a
last-second shot in the fourth quarter. This was
the Behrend's most impressive win of the season.
Behrend's defense was lead by goalie Mike May
who stopped more than 15 shots and the two that
got by him, were flukes. The first quarter goal
was deflected in off of the leg of a teammate, and
the other goal was scored with literally a second
left.
Scoring goals for Behrend were club president
Chauncey Hartwig, Keith Snead, Scott Prior, and
Mark Scabilloni.
The team finished its season with a record of 3-
6, after facing mostly DI and II schools.

talent in Shane Rock, who performed
well in the long jump and triple jump.
He finished fourth in the long jump at
20-6 and took the top prize in the triple
jump with a distance of 43-6. Rock
ended up qualifying for ECACs in the
triple jump.
While these events have been the
squad's strength, the team has struggled
in distance events, throws, and pole
vault. Lack of depth is also hurting the
team. The team competed also in the
4 X 100 relay, where Rock, Meek,
Kuntz, and Matt Beckman brought the
team a 44.55 time and eigth place finish,
good enough to make ECAC's.
On the women's side, their major
strengths are in the distance events. In

Jess Knapp also qualified for ECACs in
the 5000 meter.
In the jump events, Staci Banaszek is
the only competitor. She has performed
well and has made it to the ECACs in
the high jump. This past weekend, she
had a distance of 4-10 in the high jump,
good for eighth, and 33-5 1/2 in the long
jump. This placed her in sixth.
The throwing events have also gone
well for the team. Her first time out,
Laura Packosky broke the discus record.
She placed sixth in the javelin with a
distance of 102-4. Like on the men's
side, a lack of depth is hurting the
women's squad.
"Our overwhelming weakness is
depth for the women," coach Dave
Cooper said. "The 14 women remaining
are understaffed and as a result s tread

very thin at meets."
Considering the high level of talent
present, both teams competed very well
and Cooper was pleased with the team's
performance.
"We had some really strong
performances this past weekend. There
were over 20 teams there and our people
really answered the call," he said.
Along with the seven ECAC
qualifiers, the team also set four Behrend
records. Next on the schedule for the
team is the Slippery Rock Invitational
on Saturday, April 19 1 h. The team hopes
results will keep getting better.
"I expect us to get stronger weekly.
We'll qualify more for ECAC's and this
year hopefully score points on both the
men's and women's sides," said Cooper.
