Strong rebounding helped Behrend pound Pitt-Bradford 48-27. by Leacy Sauer staff writer After enduring a rough start to the 2002-2003 season, the Behrend women’s basketball team has finally evened the score. Facing Pitt-Bradford last Saturday, the Lions pulled away with a dominating 53-37 win. Last Monday, the Lions got their first back to back win of the season, posting a 67-56 win over Fredonia State. Behrend clawed its way up to an overall 4-4 record. Before a crowd of 725 avid fans, the Lions welcomed Pitt-Bradford last Saturday night, trying to take them on their home court. The competition was on, with only good news for the Lions. They cruised to a dominating 82- 73 decision over the defending AMCC champions. Last Monday, Penn State Behrend dropped to (2-3) in nonconference action against Westminster, losing 54-40. After a slow start in the first half against Pitt-Bradford, the Lions tied it up 34-34 at halftime. In the second half blistering three point shooting gave the Lions the lead for good. Behrend hit a sizzling 75 percent from three point land, compared to the Panthers cool 5 of 15 for 33.3 percent, during the second half. Junior center James Curren (6-6) led Behrend with 21 points, eight boards, four assists, a steal and a block in 34 minutes of action. Junior forward David Hairston grabbed a game-high 11 rebounds and had 15 points, but was cold from the field, hitting only three of nine FG attempts. Senior point guard Steve Merrill scored 14 points and had two steals. The biggest lead of the game came from Penn State Behrend with 5:50 left in the game, 69-52. Pitt-Bradford cut it down to nine at 77-68 with one minute remaining. After three shooting fouls by Pitt-Bradford on Hairston, Tom Lulich, and Merrill, the final score in the opening AMCC game was 82-73. As a team, Penn State Behrend shot 61 percent from the field, knocking down 14 of 4m , i'-v *' « tough loss against William and Jefferson (70-41) on Wednesday. Coach Roz Fornari felt as if that game was just a temporary set back, and she looked forward to going up against Pitt-Bradford. “They are a skilled team,” said Fornari “and good competitors.” When starting play again on Saturday, Fornari got the show she hoped for. The Lions won convincingly at home against Pitt-Bradford. Sophomore foward Amanda Krumpe led the team with 17 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes of action. Next up for the Lions will be school rival Penn State Altoona. Freshman guard Jennifer Yaworsky played solid defense and came up bigger on the other side of the ball. She went a perfect 3-3 from 3-point-land, and 2-2 from the charity stripe. guard Jennifer Yaworsky added 11 points with a perfect three for three beyond the arc. The Lions dominated the Panthers in three-pointers, shooting 57.1 percent overall, and made 21 of 49 from the field for 42.9 percent. Behrend also out rebounded Pitt-Bradford 48-27. Feeding off their latest victory, the Lions were ready to face their next opponent, Fredonia State. Behrend held a 25-23 lead at the end of the first half, and never let it go. During the second half Behrend scored 42 more points. The leading scorer for this game was sophomore Krumpe, a Mercyhurst Prep graduate. She scored 21 points and had 6 rebounds. Also ontributing were senior Amanda Mauser, who scored 13 points, and junior Erica Mozdy, with 10 points. The Behrend Lions are preparing to face Penn State Altoona in the second AMCC Conference match up of the season on Saturday at 6 p.m. They hopr to improve their record to 5- 4. Housing and Food Service Athlete of the Week pennState jjpErie James Curren NAME: James Curren SPORT: Men's Basketball CLASS: Junior DATE: December 9, 2002 Curren averaged 17.0 ppg and 9.1 rpg in a 1-1 split last week for the Behrend Lions. The 6- 6 center posted 21 points in Behrend's 82- 73 victory over conference oppo nent Pitt-Bradford last Saturday. Curren is second in the /AMCC conference in scoring with 99 points, averaging 19.8 points per game, and he is third in field goal percentage, shooting 67% from the floor. Curren has led Behrend in scoring in all five games so far this season. The Lions were, however, out-rebounded by the Panthers, 34-29. “[Though] we’re 1-0 in the league, we still are not playing consistently well. We were very appreciative of the fan support. I really feel they had a big part of the victory; they were loud all night. We have a lot of basketball left to play, but I do think it should give us some confidence.” said coach Dave Niland. Unlike the previous game, where the Lions dominated in three-point shooting, Westminster was on target from beyond the arc, shooting seven of 15 for 46.7 percent. Penn State Behrend, however, out-rebounded Westminster, 38-31, led by Hairston with a team-high of seven boards. Hairston also led the team in points with 10, followed by eight from both Jared Cloug and freshman guard Doug Merski. Next up for the Lions is a tough game against school rival Penn State Altoona on Saturday. The Lions won't be off for winter break. They see action against D’Youville in the first round of the Behrend Tournament, scheduled Jan 3 and 4.
