The weekend of all weekends, the cul- mination of events Last weekend's matches weren't only against the two toughest teams in the AMCC, but also included a grudge match against Altoona. Last year, Altoona was not only the only team to beat the Lions in the sea son, but also slapped them again in their second face-off to claim home -court advantage in the AMCC championship . So, the stakes were set and the teams faced off in Altoona Friday night for the ultimate showdown. With such high an ticipation for the team, the absolute worst happened to the Lions before even ar riving in Altoona to play. Due to traffic and misguidance, the Li ons showed up over a half- hour late en suring them of no warm- up time and hitting the floor cold turkey. They started off being pummelled, 2- 0. This is a deficit which is hard for any team to come back from. With their pride on the line, the Lions made a complete turnaround, shocking the Altoona crowd in one of the finest Lion volleyball comebacks to this date. "Coming from such a late start and with no preparation, it was really hard for the girls to find their groove. After the first games, it was apparent they weren't going home that easily and re ally surprised everyone with the remark able comeback," Diehl stated. The Lions went on to win the match in a shocking 3-2 victory with the games set 10-10, 3-1. "The ladies stepped up and got their heads in the game and it is apparent in the statistics," said coach Diehl. Ten strong men's teams and 11 strong women's teams showed to tackle the Wooster course. "The competition at Wooster may have been the strongest we've seen all yet," said Coach Dave Cooper. The men's team ran well, but only managed to collect an eighth place finish, while the women's team took sixth out of the 11 teams present. The team is still battling injuries and is looking forward to some of its runners returning to full strength. Sophomore Tim Schultheis once again led the way for the Lions, crossing the finish line 2.5 th overall with a time of 28:19. Taking the team's second spot with a time of 28:56 was Clayton Kirschner. Adam's numbers at the end of the night were staggering with 17 kills, 16 digs, and an amazing four aces. Senkevich, who had a remarkable game as well, ended the night with 10 kills and four solo blocks. With the victory in mind, the team went into Saturday's game against Frostburg, the toughest team in the league, with a little more confidence. But things against top ranked Frostburg didn't go quite as well as the Lions had hoped. "Although Frostburg is very strong and well maintained, they are still a very beatable team," said coach Diehl. It just wasn't there on Saturday night, and the team from Erie wasn't clicking into normal patterns. "It was an all around effort," said coach Diehl. "The passing, hitting, and serving just wasn't there for us in the game". The Lions ended up losing to the no. I ranked Frostburg 3-I in a 10-11, 3-1 .ame set. The team does not have an invitational this coming weekend, but will continue to train for the following weekend, when it will travel south to Pittsburgh for the Carnegie Mellon Invitational. "We've been training hard looking towards the AMCC meet in November, so the teams are running on tired legs in many of our meets," said Cooper. Even on tired legs, this season's cross country team is strong. The team possesses the leadership and hard work ethic needed to be successful throughout the remainder of the season.
