Behrend’s water polo team par
ticipated in the Southern Tourna
ment at Indiana University last
weekend. Behrend met Mercyhurst
first, and beat them in a close game
9-8. In the last minute, Behrend
pulled out ahead with one goal to
win. However, they then played
Gannon and lost 14-2.
The following day, the Lions lost
to Washington & Jefferson 8-4.
Washington & Jefferson opened up
on Behrend quick with three goals
in the first quarter. Behrend shut
them out in the second, but was un
able to secure a goal. In the third,
Behrend caught up, but W & J was
just too deep of the bench. Behrend

Behrend also fell to Indiana 19-

goals for Behrend.
“They played decent for having
two weeks off,” said coach Josh
Heynes. “We had a lot of rust, and
it showed in the Mercyhurst game.
We had many shots bounce off the
goal and/or the goalie. We made
them look good. We gave W & J a
run but it took too long for us to
get started. W & J had a horrible
one-point loss earlier in the day, and
they were down mentally. But, we
just did not capitalize on their ear
lier defeat.”

“Defense has been our key for the
entire year,” said Heynes. “We are
successful at having the other team
run down the shot clock and/or
stealing the ball from them.”
The team needs to concentrate on
improving the transition from de

talize on power plays and the other
team miscues.
In the upcoming Grove City In
vitational, Behrend is facing a new
Bucknell team, and they shall prove
to be a challenge. Behrend also gets
a rematch against W & J, Grove
City, and Mercyhurst.
“We have a shot a beating these
three teams, if we just get out in
front early and often,” said Heynes.

“We lost four key

made our starters play

Golf team opens spring
season after long wait
by Kate Levdansky Petrikis
assistant sports editor
After a long break, the golf team was back on the
course on Monday against Washington & Jefferson at
the Lone Pine Golf Club.
“It was great to get out on the course again after a
long winter and a frustrating spring,” said coach Patrick
Mashuda.
Behrend had a decent outing, finishing sixth out of
10 teams. Scott Bedillion, from Waynesburg College,
won the individual best score with a 74. Albert
Abramovic lead the way for Behrend with a score of
84, with Matt Sack right behind him with a score of
85. Other Behrend scores to mention are Kirk Seth
with 88, Josh Corle with 95, and Jim Vaughn finish
ing at 100.
“The spring is a great opportunity to finally get the
golf season started,” said Mashuda. “Basically, we use
the spring to get the season started. Some of our play
ers will participate in events throughout the summer
months and this allows them the opportunity compete
in April.”
With the weather permitting, Behrend will practice
at the Gospel Hill Golf Course, preparing for the Al
legheny College Tournament, which will be held April
20 and 21.
Sport improvements to use
Tennis - Sometimes watching the
players hit a ball back and forth over
a net can make even someone on
speed yawn, but not when you throw
in a little fencing (with racquets, that
is). After each match point, the
players walk up to the net and starting
going at it with their racquets, like two
fencers in battle. First one to draw
blood wins a second point. Even
during the match, you are allowed one
throw of your racquet at the other
person. Anna Koumikova, eat your

heart out.
Golf - This one was actually the
easiest one to think about. You hit the
ball towards the hole. Whoopdee doo.
But turn around and aim for the
opposing team, and, well, you have
yourself a golf game (Fore!).
Unfortunately, in order to watch this,
you would probably be in the line of
fire. Or, the players could just take
swings at each other with their clubs
(similar to tennis).

they attract a larger crowd if they had

Every time the team scored a goal or

would dive into the tub of Jell-O to
cheer on the team. Of course, the
players would probably be too
distracted to actually score any points,
but hey, if it gets more people to the
game, then I’m all for it.
