At the Grove City Tournament on March 9
and 10, the Behrend women’s water polo team
played Division II Slippery Rock, Division 111
Grove City, and Division I University of
Michigan. Behrend lost 15-2, 10-4, 17-2, re
spectively.

Behrend swimmers Casey Doody and
Lucas Dushac qualified for the ECAC Cham
pionships, which took place Feb. 27 and 28.
Doody competed in the 100 and 200 back
stroke, and Dushac competed in the 100 and
200 breaststroke.
Doody had a time of 54.06 in the 100 yard
backstroke, placing 15th overall. In the 200
backstroke he had a time of 1:57.70 with a
16th place finish, and a new team record.
“My performance was mixed at ECACs,”
said Doody. “During the trials, I had my best
races of the season. At night, swimming the
same events for consolation finals, I had very
disappointing swims.”
“They both competed well for having to
hold onto a taper for two weeks,” said coach
Josh Heynes. ‘They improved on their initial
placements in the meet substantially. I believe
both were initially placed well above 20th
place in their respective events, but they swam

The teams were tied 0-0 in the first quarter,

Grove City got four penalty shots on Behrend

fast and got back into finals (top 16) at night.
Even though they did not swim their fastest,
except for Casey in the 200 back, they were
only a few tenths off of their best times from
the week before, which is an extremely diffi
cult task to accomplish.”
Due to his hard work and dedication,
Dushac managed to hit his times. He was most
pleased with his 12th place finish in the 200
yard breaststroke with a time of 2:11.78. In
the 100 breaststroke he had a time of 1:00.33,
and a 17th place finish.
“I swam the qualifying times back in No
vember, so I was looking forward to the
ECAC’s, and training hard the whole season,”
said Dushac. “I practiced and trained three
mornings a week, and every afternoon for two
more hours to become stronger and faster.”
“It was a great experience for them to swim
against Division I and Division II swimmers,
whom they may never see again,” said
Heynes. “This meet was very fast, and tons
of new meet records were set. To be among
the fastest swimmers on the East Coast was a

perience was what we needed to bring from
each of the games,” said coach Josh Heynes.
“Game experience is essential in this sport;
being physical and in your face is what is
needed. They experienced that which will help
them endure this coming weekend.”
Today and Saturday, Behrend hosts a tour
nament where they will take on Mercyhurst,
Gannon B, Gannon A, University Park, and
Indiana University of Pennsylvania. The game
against University Park marks the first time
ever a Behrend team has played against UP.
“We have been working on some new de
fense schemes, and a new offense for this
weekend,” said Heynes. “We did some scout
ing earlier this week to see what Gannon and
Mercyhurst had to offer. Gannon is a power
house all around so they will be difficult.
“But, Mercyhurst is new and they only have
two experienced players. University Park will
want to prove something since we are a var
sity team, and they are only a club team. lUP
should be interesting. They have been a club
for a while, but still do not have a lot of depth.
We are making adjustments for each team, and
we will try to be more physical and aggressive
overall.”
great honor for them. It was interesting to
see how many people have heard of us or now
know of us, by having seen these two men at
the meet.”
Both Doody and Dushac swam extremely
well for having no expectations put on them.
The coaches wanted them to stay loose and
relaxed for the meet. Next year, Heynes wants
more to qualify, and he says they will because
it just takes one or two to get the foot in the
door and then the flood gates will open.
Doody and Dushac both believe the Lions
will make a splash next year.
“I think there will be more people repre
senting Behrend in the ECACs next season,
because a lot of swimmers were very close to
the qualifying times,” said Dushac.
“We showed a lot of people that we can
achieve a great deal with what we had this
season,” said Doody. “Coach has recruited
new talent that will almost guarantee a large
improvement for next year.”

Sophomore Hollie Stash stretches to reach a throw during Wednesday's practice
at the Junker Center pool. The Lions practiced hard this week for the Behrend
Tournament where they will play the University Park club water polo team.
Casey Doody took 15th and 16th position in the 100 and 200 backstroke, respectively,
at the ECACs. Doodylfctill sees room for improvement for next year. “Something for me
to improve for next year is my health. I was sick too many times this year.”
