PAIGE MILES / BEHREND BEACON
Behrend Athletic Director Brian Streeter (right) doesn't seem too intimidated by his ex-boss, Dr. John
Lilley. Although we're not really sure what the old friends were talking about at the recent Fall Com
mencement ceremonies, we were happy to once again snap a picture of the very photogenic provost
and dean emeritus. Perhaps Lilley is describing how his new job at the University of Nevada at Reno
is faring. Or, maybe he's describing the nightlife in Reno thumbs up.
Remote access to P drive a plus for students
by Erin McCarty
News Editor
Students who are tired of juggling floppy
disks now have an alternative thanks to the P
drive, which provides all Behrend students
with 10 megabytes of space on the Behrend
server as soon as they have registered. Up
until this semester, this drive could only be
accessed from the computer labs or kiosks.
This semester, however, Behrend follows the
lead of University Park by making the drive
accessible from the dorms or from home.
"If you have a project that's too big for
floppies, you can save it on this drive," said
Todd Say, computer lab coordinator. "You can
also back work up from home."
Now that the drive can be accessed from

remote locations, students can save their work
at home and continue working on it on campus,
or vice versa, without the aid of a disk.
Regular back-ups are always a good idea,
and students can use disks or CDs for this
purpose. The computers in the Computer
Center have writable CD drives, which means
that students can easily back up the P drive on
a CD which will hold 640 megabytes of room,
enough to back up the P drive 64 times. The
drive itself serves as a safe central location
from which students can work.
To activate the P account, press shift-enter
after pressing control-alt-delete during the log
in process. Another box will appear. Enter
your user name and the last four digits of your
social security number, which serves as the

Double-click on "My Computer" to ensure
that the P drive has connected successfully.
Once this process has been completed,
students can download the connection
software necessary to use the drive from a
remote location by clicking on the link on the
Behrend web site, www.pserie.psu.edu, and
following the instructions provided.
"We've tried to make the process as simple
as possible," said Say. Full instructions can
be found in "Computer Access Account and
Local Network Information," a brochure
which is available in the Computer Center's
pamphlet rack and online.
