Both Behrend soccer teams, in what
has become their opening kickoff for the
season, took part in the Behrend Herb
Lauffer Soccer Tournament on Saturday
and Sunday. The Lions, who have won
their tournament many times in the past,
were pitted against some very demand
ing competition. On the men's side, the
Lions battled Moravian College on Fri
day, while the women went up against
Olivet.
Despite taking twice as many shots
as their opponent, the men's team was
unable to get anything past Moravian
goalie Ryan Sculley, except Dan Falk's
goal midway through the game. As a re
sult, the Lions dropped their season
opener, 2-1. Moravian got on the board
first, putting a shot past Behrend goalie
Jacob Hordych at the 39-minute mark.
Falk answered eight minutes later with
his blast, but Moravian put the game
winner past Hordych with 15 minutes
left in the game to hand Behrend the loss.
As a team, the Lions took 10 shots but
Sculley proved too strong in goal.
The women also were able to put
more shots on goal than their opponent,
17-9, but Olivet's Melissa Sable stopped
all but one in downing the Lions 2-1.
Senior Laura Furko scored 65 minutes
into the game, after Olivet's Doris
Sullivan had put a shot past Behrend
Senior midfielder Laura Furko, shown here
maneuvering around several opponents during a
scrimmage with Fredonia State, scored a goal in
each game of the Herb Lauffer Tournament this
past weekend. Behrend lost the first game 2-1 to
Olivet but rebounded to defeat Keuka 1-0.

than enough for the Lions as the defense
limited Keuka to a miniscule four long
range shots on goal, which Malatesta had
no trouble handling.
The men's team, in their consola
tion game, faced off with Hiram College,
a team that proved to be Behrend's equal
in many ways. Mark Szewczykowski
put one past Hiram goalie Joe Van at the
30-minute mark to give Behrend the
early lead, but 25 minutes later Hiram
answered with a score by Jerrod Jones.

team traveled to Cleveland on Wednes
day to take on John Carroll University.
The Lions came in with high hopes of
upping their record, but John Carroll
dominated all the way in sending
Behrend to a 3-0 loss. Malatesta was
able to keep Carroll off the board for
more than 40 minutes but then Carroll
ran off two goals in a row and added an
other 30 minutes that all but guaranteed
the Lions would lose their second game
of the season. Behrend could only pro
duce five shots on goal while Carroll
muscled up 19 shots against Malatesta.
Before getting into their indepen
dent team schedule, the men's team trav
els up to New York to take part in the
Fredonia Tournament today and Satur
day. The women will spend their week
end hosting two teams at the Behrend
Fields, first against Ohio Northern at
3 . 30 p.m. on Saturday. Then, on Sun
day, the Lions play host to Heidelberg
College in a 2 p.m. contest. With home
field advantage, the Lions will be look
ing to bring their record to above .500
before heading into their conference
schedule. The Lady Lions have an away
game against Wooster on Wednesday
while the men will travel down to the
nation's capital to play Washington &
Jefferson on Thursday. On Saturday
Sept. 15 both squads will begin their
AMCC seasons playing at Penn State
Altoona in what has the makings of a
very competitive 2001 conference for
both teams.
